Francois Le Sueur was a Huguenot and one of the original settlers of Harlem, now part of New York City. He left France for this country about 1657, sailing from Dieppe. His sister Jeanne accompanied him. He was born in Challe-Mesnil or Colmenil, which are about 3 miles south of Dieppe in France. He married in 1659, Jannetie, daughter of Hillenbrand Pieterson of Amsterdam. He left Harlem about 1663 and went to Esopus, accompanied by his sister Jeanne, who maried Cornelis Viervant. Both she and her husband later returned to Harlem. Francois was living in 1670, but it is recorded that on Nov. 30, 1671, his widow bound out her son Willenbrand who was then 8 years old. Le Sueur variously spelled as Leseur, Lesier, Lazear and Lezier. Some of his descendants are know as Lashier. See Page 196 of Rikers 'History of Harlem'. Record of Dutch Reformed Church, New York, NY 'Francois Lejere, van Scalmeny by Dieppe, in Franckryk, en Jannetje Hillenbrants, van Amsterdam, July 12, 1659. ( See 'Lasher Family' in NY State Library.) The name Le Sueur was well established at Challe-Mesnil in Terre de Cauz, Normandy, France of which Dieppe was the capital. For the previous century, the Le Sueurs were cloth makers of Rouen, France. ' Le Sueur' means ' to work' or 'to toil'. Alternate spellings are Le Seur; De Lachaire; La Cheer; Le Jere; Lessieur; Lesier. The Le Sueurs were French Hueguenots and were more accepted by the Dutch colonists in America than the English. Francois Le Sueur explored the upper reaches of the Mississippi. He was a civil engineer. He came to the US with his sister Jeanne, in 1657 after his explorations. They came to New Amsterdam and lived in Flatbush, Long Island, they moved to New Haarlem in 1661. He had just completed the engineering for the town of Haarlem. He moved to Esopus early in 1663 due to high taxes. He was a soldier in the Esopus Indian War. As his health failed, he returned to New Haarlem with his family about 1670 and died the next year. He was enlisted with Capt. Pawling's Co.
