When eight years of age, he moved to Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, where he remained until 1713 when his father established the family at Lebanon, New London Co. Ct. He was one of the proprietors of Edgartown. |

Capt. Andrew Newcomb emigrated from the West of England. He is first mentioned in New England at his marriage in 1663 to Grace, widow of William Rix, and in 1664 in 'Directory of Ancestral Heads of New England Families (1620-1700)'. In 1697, Capt. Andrew was 'Master of ye sloop Edmund and Martha', then in New York and bound for Boston. She was carrying tobacco so may have come from Virginia. His will (Date: 31 Jan 1683, probate date 9 Dec 1686 Place: Suffolk Co, MA) bequeathed items to his wife, daughter Grace Butler, and other children. 'What Mean These Stones' by James Doyle Davison, p. 165, says Andrew was living in Boston in 1663 at 182 Hanover St. (now vacant). He also says he bought a house in 1681 Grace was the second wife of Andrew. Capt. Newcomb's will is recorded upon Suffolk Probate, Vol. 11, page 48, an exact copy of which is hereafter given. His signature to it indicates an expert writer; it is written with a worn quill pen, apparently with no hesitating or faltering movement, and the ink hascontinued jet black though written more than 230 years ago. He resided at at Isles of Shoals, New Hampshire, before Jul-1666. Lt Andrew Newcomb was residing at the Isles of Shoals as early as July 1666 as a fisherman. He was living at the Shoals or in Kittery in 1671. He removed himself from Kittery in the year 1674, following the death of his wife, taking his seven young and motherless children to a more favoralbe locality, for it is possible that the Indians had become troublesome in that locality, as King Philips' war broke out in June of 1675. He moved to Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, MA, about 1675. He settled there, was a proprietor, and received a share of the land. Constable of Edgartown (1681). He was called to the offices of juror, selectman, and assessor, and was also a lieutenant and commander and was put in charge of the fortifications (1691). In 'Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families (1620-1700)', he was listed as shipmaster and mariner and married in Boston, 1664. 6 Deposed regarding the price of fish, 27 Mar 1672, Ipswich, Essex, MA. At that time his age was stated to be 32 years or there about He served Edgartown well, as selectman, foreman of grand jury, constable, and overseer. He was always called 'Mr' a title then conferring more honor and distinction and command higher respect than that of 'Hon' of the present day. He was a prosperous man, and thus, was not included in his father's will. He constable in 1681; selectman 1693; overseer 1693; assessor 1685 after 1680 at Edgartown, Dukes County, MA ( In April 13 1691 he was chosen Lieut. of Militia. By his first wife he had seven children, all born in the vicinty of Kittery. By his second wife there were eight children. |
