Edward Rossiter was the son of Nicholas Rossiter and Elizabeth (Unknown). Edward Rossiter was born circa 1575 at Combe St. Nicholas, Somerset, England. He was baptized on 24-Feb-1561 at Aslackby, Lincolnshire, England. He married Jane Coombe, daughter of John Combe and Winifred Rossiter, circa 1585 at England. Edward Rossiter died on 30-Oct-1630 at Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island. He died on 23-Oct-1630 at Dorchester, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.
He immigrated on 30-Mar-1630 to Nantasket, Massachusetts; aboard the Mary and John, Captain Squeb commanding. Edward Rossiter gathered his household of thirteen persons and joined a group under Reverand John White that set sail for New England from Plymouth, England on 20 mar 1630 aboard the ship Mary & John. Edward, a puritan, was seeking religious freedom as well as financial gain as he was a stockholder in the Massachusetts Bay Company and, as such received 650 acres of land for the people he brought over. (Source:ATV) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------- His name was found in English records as early as 1597 as paying taxes on his father's property. He was last taxed in 1628/9. He and his household left Plymouth 20 Mar 1630 on the Mary and John as a settler and stockholder in Massachusetts Bay Colony. Edward was to receive 50 acres of land for each person he brought with him. The total of 13 persons included 5 children (all except Dorothy), the wife of Bryan, and possibly the wife and children of Nicholas. Edward died within a month of arriving in MA, his death being reported by Thomas DUDLEY (future governor) thus: 'Within a month after, died Mr. Rossiter, another of the associated, a godly man and of good estate.' from The Great Migration Begins by Robert Charles Anderson.
