Between 1788 and 1794 John Thorn appears in Personal Property Tax lists for lower Prince Wiliam Co Va. This is between Cedar Run and Potoamc River. 5-Oct-1795 JOHN THORN of Prince William County, to my loving son WILLIAM THORN, 100 acres on Lick Branch, a branch of Occoquan, being part of certain tract taken by my deceased father,WILLIAM THORN. (Deed Book Y, p. 602). 5-Dec-1803 JOHN THORN and wife MARY of Prince William County to WILLIAM LATHOM of Prince William County, for L120,15s., 105 acres, west side of Cockrell's Mill Run. Signed by JOHN THORN, MARY THORN (Deed Book 2 p. 281). On 7-Jan-1805 An early deeds index (1827) shows that Jno. THORN Senr. gave Jno. THORN Jr. property recorded in Deed Book 2, p. 443. Unfortunately that page has been removed from the book (a plat of the town of Occoquan was on the reverse). The surrounding deeds were recorded on 7 Jan. 1805, so we can be confident that is the same date of recording for this deed. It is apparently the 105 acres that John THORN Junior owned from that time. Since John Sr. had no brothers or nephews named THORN (see 1806 deed below), John Jr. would undoubtedly to be his son. 1806 John Thorn was are found on the tax list at Prince William County, Virginia, THORN JOHN Senr - 304 ac -.46 per ac.,$139.84 value.68 tax. THORN JOHN Junr - 105 ac-.46 per ac. $48.30 value.34 tax. THORN WILLIAM - 100 ac -.46 per ac. $46.00 value, .22 tax. At this date Augustine had sold his land and moved on to Smith Co Tennessee. John Thorn appeared on the census of 1810 at Dumfries, Prince William County, Virginia; 1 male age 45 and over 1 female age 45 and over Living two dwellings away is WILLIAM THORN - most likely his son. On 3-Jun-1811 JOHN THORN signed a Bond as Constable of Prince William County for two years. His securities were PETER TRONE and WILLIAM FAIRFAX. (Prince William County Deed Book 4, p.300) Not sure if this was John Sr or John Jr. Most likely it was John Sr as he does not appear on the tax lists after this time. Constables were excused from tithable conscription. On 1815 Virginia Land Owners Directory Vol 4 Northern Region by Rogere G. Ward 1999 Prince WIlliam Co Va THORN, JOHN 10NW (could be son of John ) THORN, WILLIAM 10NW These are the only THORNS found in the reference book of the Northern Neck Region of Virginia. |

On 1-Apr-1724 Tenders of Tobacco in Overwharton Parish William Thorne-1 tithable, 16,000 plants Daniel Orea 14 years old John Orea 11 years old. On 20-May-1725 WILLIAM THORN was granted 897 acres on Occoquan Run . This was in partnership with Henry Filkin. Both were residents of Stafford Co. THORN was to have 445 acres on Lick Branch. But the grant was cancelled and the whole tract given to WILLIAM THORN with HENRY FILKIN'S consent. HENRY FILKIN was granted land in this area as early as 1714. Other referances show WILLIAM THORN -Northern Neck Grants Book B, 1726-1729 p. 221. (Reel 290). It states the land was regranted to William Thorn. On 3-Jun-1729 WILLIAM THORN of Stafford Co Va was granted 897 Acres on Occaquan Run & Lick Branch of said Run. This deed for land granted HENRY FILKIN (Book A,folio 152) Notes: Refer to JOHN THORN , son , for notes on the sale of this land on Oct 22 1806. Circa 1736 Rent Rolls for Prince William County WILLIAM THORN 897 acres. 25-May-1761 Administration Bond issued to SARAH THORN ,administratrix of WILLIAM THORN,decesed HENRY PEYTON and EDWARD G WATKINS,her securities. Bond is set for 1500 pounds current money. . The size of the estate is reflected in the size of the bond. On 8-Apr-1763 "RENO &c. agt. THORN. John RENO &c Complainants agt. John THORN, Defendant. In Chancery. The Complainants filed their Bill and on the motion of the Deft. Time is given him untill next Court to answer the same." [From abstract by Ruth and Sam Sparacio] This appears to be a chancery (equity) suit to determine shares of an estate, apparently the estate of William THORN. We are not necessarily talking about land here. There could very well be personal property (slaves, livestock, household goods, financial paper) that would need to be divided among all William THORN's children. The RENOs are suing the heir-at-law to recover their share. Primogeniture determines that land would descend to the eldest son (the heir at law), but personal property should be divided equally among all the decedent's children, male and female. This suit certainly suggests that Susannah RENO had a claim on that estate. |
