Michael Jansen Vreeland was born in 1610 at Of, Scrabberkercke, Netherlands.
He married Fitje Hartmans Wessels circa 1642.
Michael Jansen Vreeland died in 1663 at Bayonne, Hudson County, New Jersey.
He was also known as Michael Jansen Vreelandt.
On circa 1638 He had originally been engaged by the patron Kiliaen van Rensselaer as a farm hand. Before leaving Amsterdam he altered his contract and agreed to go as a farmer.
He was was the head farmer for the Patroon between 1638 and 1639.
He immigrated on 4-Aug-1638 to New Amsterdam, New York County, New York; aboard the ship Het Wapen van Noorwegen sailed from Texel.
On between 1640 and 1646 he leased from van Rensselaer the farm called "den Hogen Berch." The rent of the farm was four hundred guilders annually. About one hundred and sixty dollars.
On 30-May-1640 in a letter to Arent van Curler, the Patron refers to crystal found "in the hill of michiel jansz" and says of him "I think he is one of the most upright farmers in the colony." "He writes most polotely of all."
On 25-Jun-1640 van Rensselaer wrote Michiel regarding th management of the farm and oher matters in the colony. t.
On 16-Jun-1643 The matter of the crystal seems to have aroused considerable interest, as it is mentioned again in a letter fro Arent van Curler to the Patron.
On 29-Sep-1644 Michiel Jansen sued Laruens Cornelissen for the recorvery of 90 guiders due by plaintiff's management, whom the defendant carried from the Colonie (Rennselaerswyck) without consent. Judgement for Plaintiff.
He resided at at Patron's land, in 1645; he was assessed "20 schepels wheat, 20 schepels oats and 2 schepels peas," for the Patroon's share of produce.
Michael seems to have decided to leave the hill farm as van Curler says that he )Michiel) was "treating with Adrian van der Donck about taking over van der Donck's unexpired bouwerie lease. Michael then showd that he was able to care for himself in business transactionsfor van Curler says "Michiel would first insist, as was right, that he should have nothing to do with former questions and losses, but every thing must be given to him clear>' The discussion occurred at the house of Dominie Megapolensis, the pastor. Michiel did not take over the lease. In 1646.
On 23-Apr-1646 It was natural that any man of energy and ability should look with longing eyes on the fur trade, which the Patroon and the West India Company endevored to maintain as a monopoly. The farm "de Hoogen Berch" was situated on the east side of the river near the present Mill Creek. The lessee who took it ofver after Nichiel relinquished it was Teunis Cornelisz van Vechten, formerly a farm hand of Michiels. He leased it.
