Simon De Ruine, father of Marie, wife of Samuel Demarest, and of
Jacomina, wife of Jean Demarest, styled himself a Walloon, although he is
reported to have come from Valenciennes near Landrecy. In order to escape
religious persecution he went to Holland, where he remained for 15 years. Here he married twice,
his second wife being Magdelena Van der Straaten. Nothing is known
concerning his first wife, other than that she was the mother of his two
older daughters, born in Holland, about 1645 and 1647. These children
accompanied their father and step-mother when they came to America. They sailed on the ship De Trouw, a
private trader which left Harlingen, Holland, Feb. 13, 1659. Simon's name
appeared on the passenger list as "Symon Drune from Henegouw". Fellow passengers wre Epke
Banta and Jllis Jansen Mandeville. Simon was one of thirty-two men who
settled in Harlem to the north of New Amsterdam. The original allotments of
land were soon taken up by an influx of settlers who gave their attention to farming. Simon
first owned two lots on Jochem Pieters Flat, and in 1662, acquired Lot #3
of the same grant, which lay between the Harlem River and old Kingsbridge
Road. He resided at at Henegouw, Holland, Netherlands, before 12-Feb-1659. He and Magdalena Vander Straaten immigrated on 12-Feb-1659 to New Netherlands; aboard the ship "De Trouw."
