FORT BIRD. After the battle of Village Creekqv in May 1841, Gen. Edward H. Tarrantqv ordered the construction and garrisoning of a fort near the site to protect the extreme northwest corner of the Texas frontier. Fort Bird (or Bird's Fort), constructed by a hundred volunteers of the Fourth Brigade of Texas Militia under Maj. Jonathan Bird in September and October 1841, consisted of a blockhouse and several smaller buildings enclosed in a picket stockade. Bird's company and that of Capt. Alexander W. Webb occupied the fort until March 1842, when it was apparently abandoned. The Sniveley expeditionqv was disbanded at Fort Bird in August 1843, and in September the fort housed a council between representatives of the Republic of Texasqv and nine Indian tribes. Fort Bird subsequently became the site of the Tarrant County community of Birdville, now part of northeast Fort Worth. In Arlington a stone marker, seven miles to the south, commemorates the fort.

Leona married Solomon White Caldwell, son of Matthew Caldwell and Nancy White, in 1842 at Red River County, Texas; no issue. Leona Crownover died on Oct 1, 1855 at Dallas County, Texas, at age 33. Leona was buried at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Sunnyvale, Dallas County, Texas.
She was also known as Elizabeth Leona Crownover.
On October 2, 1855, Leona Crownover Caldwell, wife of Solomon W. Caldwell, was the first laid to rest under a very old pecan tree (still living) which was located in the field of her father, Benjamin Crownover. Family history tells us that on what would be Leona's last visit to her parents, Benjamin and Nancy Crownover, she was sick with TB and ask her father if he would bury her in the field under the pecan tree. Leona passed away shortly after and the family burial place later expanded to become what is known as Long Creek Cemetery
On October 2, 2004, the Long Creek Cemetery Association will hold a dedication in remembrance of our first burial, Leona Crownover Caldwell, with the placing of a burial marker on the 149th anniversary of her death. Since Leona's death her burial place had been marked by a bois d'arc stump at the head and foot. The original markers will remain as a testament to the history of Long Creek.

Solomon White Caldwell was born on Mar 26, 1818 at Gallatin County, Illinois. He was the son of Matthew Caldwell and Nancy White. Solomon married Leona Crownover, daughter of Benjamin Crownover and Nancy Robbins, in 1842 at Red River County, Texas; no issue. Solomon married Martha Ann Coates on Sep 5, 1855. Solomon White Caldwell died on Feb 12, 1894 at New Hope, Dallas County, Texas, at age 75. Solomon was buried at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Sunnyvale, Dallas County, Texas.
He was also known as Soloman W. Caldwell.
SOLOMON W. CALDWELL is another one of the venerable pioneers of Texas. He came here in 1841, when he was twenty--three years of age, working his way by driving a team for a man who was traveling to this State. Here he found employment as a farm hand and worked in this way until he was able to buy a piece of land. He had many difficulties to meet and overcome, as did all the early settlers. When he first camped on the little creek where he now lives, Mr. Caldwell had to go four miles for water. On one occasion, while he was gone for water and his wife was getting supper, a panther approached, attracted by the odor of the meat she was cooking. She threw it the pan of meat, and when it had eaten the morsel it went away satisfied. Bears were also troublesome and frequently made raids on their hogs. Worse to be dreaded than the wild animals were the savage Indians.
Mr. Caldwell was born in the Territory of Illinois in 1818, on the 26th day of March. His father, Matthew Caldwell, was born in Union district, South Carolina, in 1783. He was first married in South Carolina and moved to Kentucky when that State was a Territory. There he reared a family of six children: Curtis; John; Isaac; Christian, wife of John Couch; Sallie, wife of Thomas Cowsert; and Pollie, wife of a Mr. Williams. Of the children by his father's first wife Mr. Caldwell knows nothing, having lost trace of them years ago. After the of his wife in Kentucky, Matthew Caldwell was married, in that State, to Nancy White, who was born in North Carolina in 1785, their marriage occurring in 1803. About 1817 they moved to Illinois. By his second wife he had five children, namely: Meron, wife of John Eads; Matthew H; George H; Solomon W; and Hugh C. The subject of our sketch is the fourth-born in this family and is the only survivor. His father died in 1826, at the age of sixty-three years, and his mother in 1837, aged fifty-three.
