William Wyckoff was born on Dec 27, 1761 at Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He was born on Dec 28, 1761 at Readington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He was born on Dec 28, 1761 at Montoursville, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Peter Wyckoff and Jane Cornell. William married Isabella Cowenhoven, daughter of Albert Covenhoven and Sarah Wyckoff, on Jan 17, 1786 at Hunterdon County, New Jersey. William Wyckoff died on Apr 2, 1847 at Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York, at age 85. William was buried at Hopewell Cemetery, Ontario County, New York.
DAR member 61962 Luella B Wagner Eade has this quote as to her patriot's service: "Peter Wyckoff 1724-1807 served as jury man 1777 and 1778, was captured by the Indians and taken to Canada. He was born ? Monmouth Co, NJ and died Lycoming Co, PA." Luella is descended thru Peter's 2nd wife Jane Cornell and their son William b 1761.
Pension application S11858 William Wickoff a 71 year old resident of Hopewell Co, NY, filed in Ontario Co, NY on 20th Nov 1832. He rec'd $61.54 per annum commencing 4 March 1831. Enlisted 8 June 1778 from his home in Muncy, Northumberland Co PA as a private under Capt Wm Hepburn, Col Henry Antes Regt. While tending their horses they were all attacked by Cayuga Indians and he was taken prisoner while at the same time as John Thompson and John Shuefelt were killed. William was taken first up Lycoming, then toward the Susquehanna River and up to Tioga River where New Town now stands, then to Cayuga Lake and remained until April 1779 and was taken place to place until Col Sullivan's Co came...taken to Fort Stanwix where Col Van Dyke commanded. William was sent under the order of a chief of the Oneida Indians for exchange, then to Albany where he was delivered to Col Van Schenck (sp?) who gave him a pass and sent him to New Burgh in a sloop onwards to Hunterdon Co, NJ where he arrived 26 Oct 1779, thus he served a term of 1 years 5 months.
While at Alexandria, Hunterdon Co, NJ he was again called out beginning 15 June 1781, as a private under Capt Christopher Johnson of the Reg commanded by Col Braun Reg't under Major Gronendike (sp?), he marched to Springfield for 2 week's duty. Then September 1781 again called out and marched to Morristown for one month's duty, during this time some prisoners broke jail and some of those had been confined for stealing horses. He claimed his term of service was 18 months 14 days about 1781. His brother Cornelius knew of his service as said brother was also captured by the Indians, also he names three men who could testify for him - Reverend Ebenezer Benham, Daniel Clark, John Rigner, Robert Hughes of Hopewell. He stated that he was born at Readington 27 Dec 1761 and at age 13 the family moved to Muncy in Pennsylvania, and after peace he lived there until about 40 years when he removed to Hopewell.
A statement by his brother Cornelius Wyckoff follows stating that in May of 1778 the brothers and their father Peter served under Capt Hepburn in Muncy, that William was taken prisoner and that Cornelius himself was being held prisoner at the time William was released and returned. He stated that they lived nearby to one another ever since.
His full pension file should be on LDS film #972571 which begins with the spelling Wicoff. I've read 972573 which begins Wikoff and 972653 which has Wyckoff.

General Commission on Archives and History, !The United Methodist Church Post Office Box 127, Madison, New Jersey 07940 !Dear Ms. Fearnow:
This is in response to your request for information on Rev. Uriel Spencer.
The only record we have found on him is a short obit published in the New York Christian Advocate and Journal, August 11, 1853, a copy of which we are sending you with this letter. Following the lead in the obit, "thirty years ago", ie. 1823, we looked up the listings of ministers from 1813 to 1827, in all the more than a dozen conferences of the Methodist Episcopal church during that period and the only Spencer in the lists was a Robert Spencer who entered the ministry in 1824 in the Ohio conference and, unlike Uriel, was ordained. Note that we made a great allowance in terms of time (14 years) and place coverage (all the annual conferences during that period) because we wanted to be sure that if indeed he was itinerated, his name should have appeared in the ordination process. What this means then that Pastor Uriel Spencer as implied in the obit was a local pastor, not ordained and indeed lots of Methodist pastors especially during that era fell into this category. But perhaps, as alluded also in the obit, his health prevented him from doing full time ministry even in this category.
We hope that the above material will help you in your research. Our best wishes. Sincerely yours, Research Assistant, Genealogy Service, The Methodist Library.
PS The obit places his death, June 2, but since it was published on August 11, your date may be more accurate.
After the death of Sarah, Uriel Spencer married Elizabeth Holdridge and had two more children; Martha , who married John Pease; and Mary Emma, who married Rev. Henry Wright, a descendant of the Guilford, Conn., Wrights.
After Uriel Spencer's death in 1853 his widow Elizabeth married Lewis Horton, of Royalton, NY, and died in Royalton, in 1872.
Uriel Spencer, son of Nathan and Lydia (Doolittle) Spencer, was born in Bristol, Ontario Co., NY, April 30, 1796. He was a Methodist Episcopal Minister, in Ontario CO, NY, but having lost his voice, was unable to continue that work and emigrated to the wilds of Ohio, where, because of his superior education, he was soon elected to public office, was a justice of the peace, and was county auditor of Lucas county.
He was received on trial in the Genesee, NY, conference at it's annual session in Westmoreland beginning July 15, 1823. He was appointed as second preacher with Gideon Lanning to Catherine, Schuyler Co. He was discontinued the next year, at the session held in Lansing beginning July 25, 1824. His son Nathan was born April 11, 1824, but whether at Catherine, or at Cohocton where family tradition says, I do not know. Uriel Spencer owned land at various places in Ontario Co., and whether his family went to Catherine with him or not, we do not know. July 11, 1812, he bought one half acre of land in Williamson, Ontario Co., NY. (now in Wayne Co.). October 13, 1834, Uriel and Sarah Spencer sold land in Canadice, Ontario Co., NY to the amount of $1400.00.
After Uriel's marriage to Elizabeth Holdridge he moved, in 1845, to Raisin Township, Lenawee county, Michigan, where he died June 2,1853. He is buried in the northeast corner lot of the Raisin Presbyterian Cemetery, and his son James beside him.
James died unmarried, in early manhood. Mary Hancock, unmarried, daughter of his daughter Esther, is also buried on this same lot, also Rev. Henry and Mary Emma (Spencer ) Wright and their unmarried daughter Elizabeth.
My father told me that Uriel's first wife, Sarah Wyckoff, was buried on a sandy ridge in the woods of Lucas County, Ohio, that the location of the grave had been lost. It was a bitter winter day when she was buried. Her casket was carried on the shoulders of men who broke through the ice of a small stream as they went. The old records of Lenawee County, Michigan, show that in 1845 Uriel Spencer owned the north east quarter of section twenty-seven of Raisin township. From this seventy acres in the northwest quarter of this quarter was sold to his son, Nathan Spencer. Here Nathan Spencer built his house, and here his children were born, and my brother and I were also born there. Uriel Spencer never lived on Sec. 27, but built a large brick house on his wife's property, sec. 22, one half mile north, and died there in 1853. At the time of his death he was making preparations to move to his own property, and the widow and children soon after did move there, and later Rev. Henry Wright's family. At the time that Rev. Wright moved away there were numerous things stored in the attic, including two large illustrated Bibles, which likely contained family records that would be of interest if the Bibles could
be located. This place is only five or six miles from where I now live and I have tried to find the Bibles, but the house in NE corner of the section has been rebuilt and I have been unsuccessful. If they could be found they should give more information on the children of William Wyckoff and Isabella Covenhoven.
Copies of letters and papers in possession of Mrs. Florence Spencer Whelan, Teumseh, Mich.
Uriel Spencer's will mentions wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Esther Hancock (who died in May, just before her father, near Delta, Ohio, and left a small girl, Mary Hancock, mentioned above); and daughter, Sarah J. (should be I.) Spencer, who is to be paid " The amount of money I received from her Grandfather's estate for her."; and mentions, also, son Nathan. No other heirs are mentioned in this will, although I know from personal knowledge that there were others. The "Grandfather" mentioned must have been William Wyckoff, and perhaps a search of the settlement of his estate might yield something of interest. The other grandfather, Nathan Spencer of Bristol, NY, died while Uriel was young, and his estate was probated in 1808, on file in Canandaigua, NY.
There were seven heirs of Uriel Spencer, besides the widow. In the diary of his son, Nathan, my grandfather, which diary I have, under date of October 24, 1853, I find "Judge Stacy informed us that Peter's little girl was heir to one seventh."
Peter's little girl was Mary, daughter of Esther Spencer and Peter Hancock, mentioned above. Besides Mary and the widow, Elizabeth, there were: Lydia, wife of Horace Pease; Sarah J.[I], youngest child, not married at this time; William, the oldest son; Nathan, my grandfather; and Martha and Mary Emma, children of the second wife. This shows that, besides Esther and James, the seventh child of Sarah Wyckoff, unknown to me, had died before the father, Uriel Spencer.

In response to our letter of Sept 26, I will try to do best I can. I have copied out by hand the bits and pieces. As to your question of newspaper's iln area in 1850's. If there were any there is no record of papers. Deta was supposed to have one back then. The earliest we have is either 1868 or 1872 or 1880 have to r. this. Most of our co. records were lost in a fire 14 or 15 of July of 1864. The early land records are recopied from Lucas Co. The Census we have on Microfilm 1850 to 1920. Marriages in books, including a list though we're out of some books. Bits & pieces in history books. I copied by hand most of them for you. Thought would be a write up with his being a early settler but none.
At the time Sarah Wyckoff died, that half of Fulton co was Lucas co yet. Fulton co became a co in 1850. Marriages start 1865 and births and deaths in1867. Newspapers started sometime after that. I believe Sarah was buried in Fowler Cem. or Burkibill Cem. or on own farm. No record of this. Fowler Cem. no longer there and several others all gone in that area.
This is main stuff I can find at this time, if you wish more it's $5.00 an hour plus copies cost and postage. I do only Fulton Co research though. State exactly. Sincerely, Elfrieda Jewell
