Sarah Elizabeth Conover Reynolds, age 88, died in her sleep February 5, 2000, in the home of her son Peter. She survived a major cancer operation over 30 years ago, quadruple bypass surgery over 15 years ago, and a major heart attack three years ago. Shortly before last Christmas another heart attack caused irreparable damage to her heart. She was cared for tenderly by the staff of LDS hospital, the Salt Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and family prior to returning "home." Family members visited her daily during this time Father in Heaven allowed her to linger, and much good was accomplished. She loved and was loved by many people. Those left behind will miss her, those who preceded her in death will greet her joyously.

Elizabeth was born November 14, 1911, in Provo, Utah, the daughter of Don Wilson Conover and Harriet Conover. She graduated from Provo High School, and Brigham Young University. She taught high school several years after graduation though she was not much older than her students. Former students, now in their 80s, still feel a love and kinship with her. She later earned a Master's degree from the University of Utah.

She married Levi Ervin Reynolds, June 10, 1936, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they worked so Levi could become a pediatric surgeon. Although she had been told that an earlier injury would prohibit her from having children, she had four. Elizabeth was blessed with many talents. As opportunities presented themselves, she used these talents to bless the lives of those around her. She served in many leadership positions, including international president of La Sertoma, a service organization whose goal is service to mankind. She authored seven books which she lovingly gave to family and friends. For many years she gathered her grandchildren around her for "grandma's day." She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints, serving in many positions throughout her life. She helped write Primary and Sunday School lessons for eight and nine year olds, filled three proselyting missions, and served for 12 years in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Reynolds (Michael) Cullis; two sons, Don Wilson Conover (Jennifer) Reynolds, Peter Levi (Lori) Reynolds; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband; her youngest son, John Van Lee Reynolds; and three brothers, Abram Wilson Conover, William Harrison Conover, and Don Wallace Conover.
Services will be held in the Provo 8th Ward Chapel, 502 E. 200 N., on Wed., Feb. 9, 2000 at 12 noon. Friends may call Tuesday, February 8, 2000 from 6-8 p.m. at Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center, Provo or at the chapel on Wednesday one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Provo City Cemetery.

      Dr. Levi Ervin Reynolds was born on Mar 15, 1912 at Mount Pleasant, Sanpete County, Utah. He was the son of Levi W. Reynolds and Ellis Darnall. Levi married Sarah Elizabeth Conover, daughter of Don Wilson Conover and Harriet Ann Harrison, on Jun 10, 1936 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. Dr. Levi Ervin Reynolds died on Aug 24, 1972 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, at age 60. Levi was buried at Provo City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.

WILLIAM I. KOUWENHOVEN.

William I. Kouwenhoven, who resides at Flatlands, was born at Bedford, Long Island, April 5, 1818, and is descended from good old Revolutionary stock. His grandfather was William Kouwenhoven, and his father was John I. Kouwenhoven. The latter served in the Revolutionary war, loyally aiding in the struggle for American independence. lie removed to Gravesend when the subject of this review was a lad of eleven years, and there he made his home until his death, which occurred in 1873. At one time he was superintendent of the poor of the town, and in church work he was very active, holding membership with the Dutch Reformed Church and serving as deacon and elder in the congregagation with which he was identified. He married Susan Lake, a daughter of Peter Lake, of Flatbush, and they became the parents of three children, of whom two are living, William I. and Jane Aletta, who is now the widow of Stephen Vanderveer, of New Lots.

Mr. Kouwenhoven, whose name introduces this review, spent the days of his childhood under the parental roof, his time being quietly passed without event of special importance. He was reared to farm work, and throughout his business career carried on agricultural pursuits, his well tilled fields bringing to him a good return. Gradually his capital was thus increased and he secured a good bank account, but a short time ago he sold his farm and is now living retired in the enjoy ment of a well earned rest.

Mr. Kouwenhoven was united in marriage. in 1843, to Miss Abigail Baxter, a daughter of Garret S. Baxter, of Flatlands. This venerable couple lived to celebrate their golden wedding day, March 22, 1893. On December 13. 1895, Mrs. Kouwenhoven passed away to her eternal rest. They had nine children of whom seven are living, namely: Susan L. the wife of William Schenck of Flatbust, Long Island; Abbie W., wife of James R. Fredericks, of Jamaica, Long Island; John J., who resides at Vineland, New Jersey; Williamson, who resides at the homestead with his father; Peter W., a resident of Jamaica; Anna, the wife of Alfred B. Crossman, of New Lots; and Kitty wife of John M. Remsen, of Flatlands, now residing at the old homestead. Mr. Kouwenhoven has now passed the eighty-third milestone on life's journey and his rest is well merited. He enjoys the veneration and respect which should ever be accorded to those who attain to advanced age and is accounted one of the leading citizens of his community.
