Carl Conover, 86, of Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of East Moline, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004.

Services are 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Lourdes, Venice, Fla.. Burial is in Venice Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at Ewing Funeral Home Chapel, Venice. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, The Relay for Life, 22107 Elmira Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33952.

Mr. Conover was born May 5, 1917, in Hampton.

He was a World War II Navy veteran.

Mr. Conover was personnel manager at East Moline Products for 32 1/2 years. He moved to Port Charlotte from East Moline 25 years ago.

He was a lifetime member of American Legion in Illinois, a 50-year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a longtime basketball and baseball coach.

Surviving are his wife, Betty; daughter, Peggy Helmers, Port Charlotte; sons, Bill Conover, Centerville, Va., and Bob Conover, Port Charlotte; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

BERTHA CONOVER, 93, of Colts Neck, died Aug. 26 at Fletcher Allen Healthcare, Burlington, Vt. Mrs. Conover was born in Newark. She was employed for 15 years as a cafeteria supervisor for the Freehold and Colts Neck school districts before retiring in 1982. She was a lifetime member of the Colts Neck Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Conover was predeceased by her husband, Arnold, who died in 2001. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Janet Conover of Manchester Township; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Edward Gorchinski of Colchester, Vt; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A funeral service was held at the Colts Neck Reformed Church, followed by interment in Atlantic Cemetery, Colts Neck.

He grew up in Pleasantville, and helped his father who was an oysterman. He married my grandmother, Helen Amelia Leeds, born Oct. 26, 1896, in 1914. They had 3 children, Carl, Madeline, and Helen. They lived in Pleasantville most of their lives, however toward the end, because of health problems they would travel out to Phoenix, Arizona every winter. My grandmother had her leg amputated because of diabetes while living in Ariz. She died some time later, April 3, 1968. My grandfather moved back to N.J. where he died in 1976. It wasn't till a few years ago I was told, by my cousin, to go see my grandfathers gravestone. I was surprized to see he had
a letter engraved on the back of his stone, about a Social Security plan he sent to Pres. Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1929 (before he became Pres.)and how he had 3 friends witness this plan. Frank Gangler, George White (a negro), from Whitesboro and Rev. Moore. Someone from Washington came and got Frank Gangler and took him to Wash. to implement the Social Security Plan, but my Grandfather Earl never got any recognition for this plan. He died an angry man. I had heard over the years about his Social Security Plan but never imagined that he would have it engraved on his tombstone. My grandmother is buried beside my grandfather, along with most of his family including his mother and father, many of his brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, that include Leeds, Conovers and Lakes.
