John L. Conover, 83, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at Plymouth Manor Care Center of Le Mars.

John Leon Conover was born Jan. 20, 1923, in Le Mars, the son of H.B. and Edith (Gerling) Conover. He attended elementary and high school in Le Mars. On Dec. 24, 1942, John and Marjorie Moeller were united in marriage in the Methodist parsonage in Le Mars. On March 12, 1943, John enlisted in the United States Army. He proudly served his country during World War II overseas in central Europe. John earned his honorable discharge on March 26, 1946, having attained the rank of T. Sgt.

John and Marge made their home in Le Mars following the war. John then began his career in the grain trading and hauling industry. He worked as an independent owner and operator throughout the Midwest until his retirement in 1978. He moved to Plymouth Manor on May 8, 2002.

John was an avid outdoorsman. He spent the majority of his free time hunting, fishing and camping. He especially enjoyed the times his sons would participate. John was an accomplished target shooter and is the holder of two national records. He was also given the gift of music and could play nearly any instrument by ear without formal training.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Marge of Le Mars; a son John "Jake" Conover and his wife Linda of Le Mars; a grandson Jon of Le Mars; a granddaughter Sara Conover and her fiancé Damon Magstadt of Jefferson, S.D; and a great-grandson, Carter Alan Magstadt of Jefferson, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Alan.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church of Le Mars. The Rev. Jason Larson will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion in Le Mars will provide military honors. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Friday) at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled for 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral. Expressions of sympathy may be directed through www.mauerjohnsonfh.com

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland and the Le Mars Dialysis Center.
