Gene Sanders, 79, St. Joseph, died Thursday, December 1, 2011, at a local health care facility.

He was born May 2, 1932, to Earle E. and Helen (McCarthy) Sanders in St. Joseph. Gene remained a lifelong resident except for two years’ military duty in Germany.

Gene married Madeleine Burrowes, December 28, 1954.

He graduated from Christian Brothers High School and received his degree from the University of Illinois. Mr. Sanders worked as a CPA and was co-owner of Sanders, Mogg & Associates. Gene was President of the Benton Club and the Country Club. He served on the board of the United Way and was on the Salvation Army Board. He was President of Kappa Sigma at the University of Illinois. Upon retirement, he volunteered to deliver meals for InterServ.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Bob.

Survivors: his wife; daughters: Helen, St. Joseph; Janet Smith (Carl), St. Joseph; Madeleine “Mini” McLaughlin (Tim), St. Louis, Mo; and Kathleen Gillman (John), Harrisburg, Mo; sons, Robert Sanders (Carolyn), Mark Sanders (Lisa), and David Sanders (Sally), all of St. Joseph; and 23 grandchildren: Josh, Chris (Adrienne), and Levi Smith; Phil, Aaron, Maggie, Patrick, Mitchell, Tommy, Jack, Kate, Joseph, and John Sanders; Josh and Jessica Weaver; Timothy, Michael, Sean, Katie, and Nicolas McLaughlin; and John Michael, Ann Elizabeth, and Madeleine “Maddie” Gillman; two great-grandsons, Henry and Harrison Smith; three nephews; and one niece.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Saturday, St. Joseph Cathedral Catholic Church. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery.
