Manning on Jan 3, 1870 at Saint Louis, Missouri. Mary married Daniel Quincy Cook, son of John Cook Jr. and Sarah Adams, on May 17, 1874 at Saint Louis, Missouri. Mary Margaret Spencer died on Apr 9, 1917 at Venice, Madison County, Illinois, at age 67.

Conover and Margaret Wilson, on Aug 24, 1854 at Fulton County, Illinois. Isaac S. Horton died on Jun 1, 1865. Isaac was buried after Jun 1, 1865 at Hart Cemetery, Fulton County, Illinois.
     He he served in the Civil War circa 1863. He was ill with he contracted throat and lung disease, while in the service circa 1863.

      Martha E. Horton was born in 1858. She was the daughter of Isaac S. Horton and Catherine Conover. Martha married (Unknown) Haverton. Martha E. Horton died in 1881 at Barton County, Missouri.

      Thomas Jefferson Horton was born in 1860. He was the son of Isaac S. Horton and Catherine Conover.

      Elmer Elsworth Horton was born in 1863. He was the son of Isaac S. Horton and Catherine Conover. Elmer married Mary Cade.

      William D. Carter was born on Jul 28, 1836 at Harrison County, Indiana. He was the son of William Davisson Carter and Eleanor Lemmon. William married Martha Combs Conover, daughter of Levi P. Conover and Margaret Wilson, on Nov 26, 1857 at Lewiston, Fulton County, Illinois. William married Louisa Foutch in 1892 at Woodson County, Kansas. William D. Carter died on Mar 1, 1900 at age 63. William was buried after Mar 1, 1900 at Foutch Cemetery, Fulton County, Illinois.
     He and Martha Combs Conover resided at at Yates Center, Woodson County, Kansas, circa 1887. William appears in his parents' Harrison County, Indiana household in the 1850 and 1860 Indiana census records. He was listed as a 24 year old day laborer in 1860, when he was the only child left at home. His name is given as William D. Carter in his father's will, in which he was left $25 rather than an equal share of the estate.
Nancy Grieve (nancy@avonil.net) sent an e-mail note 14 Jul 1999 saying she had found William D. Carter buried in Foutch Cemetery, Fulton County, Illinois. He was in the Civil War, Co. A, 12th Inf., Co. 58. She sent the following information from his pension papers: Born 1836 Harrison Co IN. Raised there, his father lived near the Ohio River, in Indiana. Enlisted 23 April 1861 at New Albany, Indiana, Floyd County, age 25. Discharged 19 May 1862, Washington, DC. Lived in
Harrison County after discharge until 1870, when he moved to Illinois. Declaration for invalid Army Pension 1879, res. Alexander, in Morgan Co., IL. Went back to Harrison County, Indiana in June 1879 to get witnesses (doctor) for claim for pension. Marriage information and birth of son James was included, and information on children of his second wife. We subsequently obtained a copy of William's pension papers. The text of a statement he made on December 10, 1880, at Alexander, Illinois in support of his claim follows:
"Dear Sir:
Yours of ?? just received and in reply will say that I was born and raised in Harrison Co. Ind. My occupation previous to my enlistment into the Army was a farm laborer. My father lived near the Ohio river on the Indiana side. His family physician was Dr. Ambrose Geohaghan, who lives in Kentucky just across
the river. I still lived in Harrison Co., Ind. after my discharge until the year 1870 when I moved to this state where I now live. My physicians since I came here have been Drs. E.F. Baker and Samuel Edwards. My occupation since my discharge has been farming--what time I have been able to work. I have been employed as superintendent of a farm and keeping boarding-house for Sam. S. Dewees who lives at this place. At present I am keeping his boardinghouse only. I am not able to perform hard labor at anytime on account of a severe pain in the right side. I can superintend a farm and keep men at work in fine weather, but the least cold I take it lays me up with a severe pain in my right side so that I am not able to be out of doors more than one half of my time. The doctors call my disease chronic pleurisy. Upon the slightest exposure I am laid up and have to call a physician. The first time I felt this pain in my side was in Dec. 1861 about the 20th. I was on picket duty at the time at a place called Shephards Island on the Potomac river in the state of Maryland. I took a hard chill while on duty and was carried to Sharpsburg in an ambulance and placed in the hospital where I was treated by Drs. Howard and Campfield. The Drs. called my disease typhoid pneumonia. For two months I was sick in the hospital. After I was discharged from the hospital I was not able to perform any manual duty, but was kept on the payrolls until May 1862 when I was discharged from the service and went home. Since I was taken sick when on picket duty, as before
stated, I have never been free from a pain in the right side. When the regiment marched I was no longer able to march in the ranks and had my arms and accoutrements ordered carried by the regimental doctors (Howard and Campfield). I was back in Indiana in Harrison Co., where I was raised in June 1879. I went there to get witnesses in my claim for pension. Dr. Goehagan attended upon me several times after I was discharged until I moved to this state. Drs. Baker and Edmonds have attended on me since I have been in this state, and their attendance has been so frequent that it would be hard to enumerate them--I think it would be safe to say twenty times each. Their address is Alexander, Morgan Co. Ill. I find that my disease grows worse as I grow older and the doctors inform me that I cannot be cured but must continue to grow worse. I was drafted into the Army in 1864 and was assigned to Co. K 58th Ind. but was not able to do any duty. At the present time I am not able to leave the house and cannot draw a long breath without pain. Believing that I have answered the questions asked in your letter, I am, Yours Respectfully, William D. Carter."

The Fulton County, Illinois census for 1860 shows William's wife Martha and her son living with Martha 's mother and brother. Why William would have been living with his parents and Martha with her mother is a mystery right now. William is listed as a 43 year old brick mason in the 1880 Alexander, Morgan County, Illinois census. Also in the household were wife Martha, son James, cousin Martha Wilson, servant Sallie Mathews and boarders Stephen A. Baker, Harvy
Sorrells, and Henry Plumper. William listed his father's birthplace as Tennessee and his mother's as Maryland.

On September 13, 1873 William D. Carter of Morgan County purchased Lot Number 1 in Block Number 15 in Alexander, Morgan County, Illinois from James C. and Emma J. Garmong. On August 14, 1886 William and wife Martha C. Carter of Woodson County, Kansas sold the same lot to Samuel S. Dewees.
William has a Union tombstone in Foutch Cemetery, Isabel Township, Fulton County, Illinois. It provides his birth and death dates and states that he was a veteran of Co. A 12th Ind. Inf. Co. 58, Civil War. He also shares a stone with his second wife, Louisa (Foutch).

      James S. Carter was born on Sep 11, 1858 at Fulton County, Illinois. He was the son of William D. Carter and Martha Combs Conover. James married Anna J. Ebert, daughter of Andrew Ebert and Sopha Seller, on Jul 3, 1884 at Alexandria, Morgan County, Illinois; by Samuel Edmonds Justice of the Peace. James married Hester McClelland at Fulton County, Illinois.
     James S. Carter and Hester McClelland resided at at Kansas.

      Daisy L. Carter was born on Oct 29, 1883. She was the daughter of William D. Carter and Martha Combs Conover. Daisy was buried in 1897 at Foutch Cemetery, Fulton County, Illinois. She died on May 5, 1897 at Isabel Twp., Fulton County, Illinois, at age 13; from diptheria.

      Edmund A. Wright was born on Jul 28, 1836 at Indiana. Edmund married Margaret Conover, daughter of Levi P. Conover and Margaret Wilson, on Sep 16, 1858 at Fulton County, Illinois. Edmund A. Wright died on Mar 20, 1926 at age 89. Edmund was buried after May 20, 1926 at Foutch Cemetery, Fulton County, Illinois.
     He and Margaret Conover resided at at farm, Fulton County, Illinois, in 1859; they lived here all of their married lives.

      Clarissa J. Wright was born in 1860. She was the daughter of Edmund A. Wright and Margaret Conover. Clarissa married Samuel Foutch at Fulton County, Illinois. Clarissa J. Wright died in 1939.
     She and Samuel Foutch resided at at Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois.

      Taylor E. Wright was born in 1867 at Illinois. He was the son of Edmund A. Wright and Margaret Conover. Taylor married Ida M. Farmer. Taylor married Mrs. Etta Purdy; 2nd marriage Taylor. Taylor E. Wright died in 1956.

      Martha Tillie Bennett was born on Feb 5, 1849 at Illinois. She was the daughter of William J. Bennett and Deborah (Unknown). Martha married John Hardin Conover, son of Levi P. Conover and Margaret Wilson, on Sep 24, 1868 at Fulton County, Illinois. Martha Tillie Bennett died on Sep 21, 1930 at age 81. Martha was buried after Sep 21, 1930 at Yates Center Cemetery, Yates Center, Woodson County, Kansas.

      Viola Eleanor Conover was born on Sep 15, 1869 at Kerton Twp., Fulton County, Illinois. She was the daughter of John Hardin Conover and Martha Tillie Bennett. LaFayette was buried after Aug 4, 1946 at Highland Cemetery, Iola, Allen County, Kansas.

      Simeon W. Jones was born on Apr 11, 1844 or Apr 11, 1845 at South Bend, Saint Joseph County, Indiana. He was the son of Seaborn Jones and Fetna Curtis. Simeon married Josephine McCausland, daughter of James McCausland and Clarissa Conover, on Mar 21, 1871 at Fulton County, Illinois. Simeon W. Jones died on Jan 18, 1921; of cancer. Simeon was buried at Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon, Vernon County, Missouri.

SIMEON JONES. It is a generally conceded fact that the farmer enjoys a greater amount of personal freedom than any other man who is engaged in the busy and almost endless task of accumulating money. There is something about life in the country where one is surrounded by Nature on every side, that seems to bring a quietness and peace found nowhere else.
Our subject, who is at present a prosperous farmer of Kerton Township, was born in South Bend, Ind., on the 11th of April, 1845. His father, Seabron Jones, was born in Ohio, but removed to Indiana when a young man, settling near South Bend. He was married there to Miss Fetna Curtis, and in 1849 removed to Illinois, making the trip by wagon and camping on the way. He settled at Bath, Mason County, where he remained one year, and then moved to this county, on section 17, Kerton Township, where he rented land and farmed. His father was a member of the Democratic party. He died in 1853. His wife died at the age of sixty-five. To them were born six children, viz: Nancy, Warren, Ada, Anna, Simeon, and Henry, only three of whom are living at the present time, viz: Anna, Warren, and Simeon.
Mr. Jones came to this place with his parents when he was only four years of age, and attended school in the little log schoolhouse in his neighborhood, but received a very limited educational training, the matter of education not receiving any of the care that is universally given it now in all parts of the country. At an early age he commenced working on a farm, and when only twelve years of age he worked for one man, and received in payment for his labor $9 per month at the start, and afterward received $30.
Our subject, in March, 1870, married Miss Josephine McCausland. Her parents were born in Canada, but her birth occurred in this State, and she received her education in this county. To Mr. and Mrs. Jones have been born five children, all of whom are living, viz: Adda L., Irvin O., Rosa, Scott and Kennett. After his marriage our subject rented a place for four years, and at the end of that time bought eighty acres of land, and lived on the same for a period of ten years. The place was little improved, and the only dwelling house was a small log cabin. He soon cleared thirty acres of the land, and built a nice house and large barn, and still owns the place, although he is now living on property which he has rented for five years, and which is a picturesque spot. The house stands on the edge of the bluffs that overhang the Illinois River, and commands a fine view of the beautiful landscape around. He is a member of the Democratic party, and is popular in political circles. He is held in the highest esteem throughout the township, and has been Road Commissioner for the past nine years.

      Adda Lee Jones was born on Feb 21, 1872 at Fulton County, Illinois. She was the daughter of Simeon W. Jones and Josephine McCausland. Adda married Harvey Garlad Bundy on Dec 1, 1897 at Barton County, Missouri. Adda Lee Jones died on Jul 8, 1898 at age 26; in childbirth. Adda was buried at Sheldon, Vernon County, Missouri.

      Irvin Oscar Jones was born on Sep 18, 1875 at Fulton County, Illinois. He was the son of Simeon W. Jones and Josephine McCausland. Irvin married Fannie Pearl Smiley on Sep 20, 1896 at Barton County, Missouri. Irvin Oscar Jones died on Jan 13, 1949 at age 73; of a heart attack. Irvin was buried at Saint James Cemetery, Milford, Barton County, Missouri.

      Lura Rosetta Jones was born on Aug 13, 1879 at Fulton County, Illinois. She was the daughter of Simeon W. Jones and Josephine McCausland. Lura married Charles Lukey on Sep 5, 1897 at Barton County, Missouri. Lura Rosetta Jones and Charles Lukey were remarried on Sep 5, 1914 at Havana, Mason County, Illinois. Lura Rosetta Jones died on Jul 24, 1957 at age 77. Lura was buried at Sacramento, Sacramento County, California.

      Scott Elsworth Jones was born on Sep 16, 1881 at Fulton County, Illinois. He was the son of Simeon W. Jones and Josephine McCausland. Scott Elsworth Jones died on Feb 14, 1931 at age 49; of cancer. Scott was buried at Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon, Barton County, Missouri.

      Kenneth Kent Jones was born on Nov 14, 1888 at Fulton County, Illinois. He was the son of Simeon W. Jones and Josephine McCausland. Kenneth married Ruth Helm on Jan 26, 1910 at Montrose, Delta County, Colorado. Kenneth Kent Jones and Ruth Helm were divorced.

      McHarold Jones was born on Jun 10, 1891 at Barton County, Missouri. He was the son of Simeon W. Jones and Josephine McCausland. McHarold married Dora Ruth Werts on Sep 10, 1910 at Fort Scott, Bourbon County, Kansas. McHarold Jones died on Oct 21, 1946 at age 55; of a heart attack. Lindell married Gladys Mabel Barnes on May 27, 1917 at Barton County, Missouri. Lindell Wakefield Jones died on Nov 1, 1970 at age 75. Lindell was buried at Memory Gardens, Lamar, Barton County, Missouri.

      Rosamond Lee Losh was born in Oct, 1877 at Illinois. She was the daughter of Phillip Joshua Losh and Lura McCausland. Rosamond Lee Losh died on May 31, 1945 at age 67; from a heart attack. Rosamond was buried at Belton Cemetery, Belton, Cass County, Missouri.

      Corda Pauline Losh was born in Aug, 1881 at Illinois. She was the daughter of Phillip Joshua Losh and Lura McCausland. Corda married Ed H. Neil.
     Corda Pauline Losh resided at at Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.

      Adda May Losh was born in 1886 at Illinois. She was the daughter of Phillip Joshua Losh and Lura McCausland. Adda May Losh died in 1898; of Typhoid Fever. Adda was buried at Belton Cemetery, Belton, Cass County, Missouri.

      James Hubert Losh was born on Feb 7, 1888 at Merriam, Johnson County, Kansas. He was the son of Phillip Joshua Losh and Lura McCausland. James married Mable M. Hunter in 1917 at Olathe, Johnson County, Kansas. James Hubert Losh died on Jun 18, 1940 at age 52; suicide. James was buried at Olathe Memorial Gardens, Olathe, Johnson County, Kansas.

      William Randall Losh was born on Apr 4, 1893 at Olathe, Johnson County, Kansas. He was the son of Phillip Joshua Losh and Lura McCausland. William married Vera Dorthea Smitherman in 1917 at Olathe, Johnson County, Kansas. William Randall Losh and Vera Dorthea Smitherman were divorced. William Randall Losh died on Aug 15, 1958 at age 65. William was buried at Olathe Memorial Gardens, Olathe, Johnson County, Kansas.

      Charles Frederick Losh was born in Mar, 1898. He was the son of Phillip Joshua Losh and Lura McCausland. Charles married Annella M. Kenedy on Dec 19, 1922 at Olathe, Johnson County, Kansas. Charles married Thelma (Unknown). Charles Frederick Losh died on Apr 11, 1954 at Berkeley, Alameda County, California, at age 56.

     George married Mary Margaret Spencer, daughter of George W. Spencer and Biddy Custer Conover, on Jan 3, 1870 at Saint Louis, Missouri.

     Daniel Quincy Cook was the son of John Cook Jr. and Sarah Adams. Daniel married Mary Margaret Spencer, daughter of George W. Spencer and Biddy Custer Conover, on May 17, 1874 at Saint Louis, Missouri.

      Elizabeth Pineleaf Manning was born in 1873 at Saint Louis, Missouri. She was the daughter of George W. Manning and Mary Margaret Spencer. Elizabeth married Anthone Jacob Zumsteg in 1890 at Madison County, Illinois. Elizabeth Pineleaf Manning died on Sep 1, 1945 at Saint Louis, Missouri.

      Anna Mary Cook was born on Oct 12, 1875 at Saint Louis, Missouri. She was the daughter of Daniel Quincy Cook and Mary Margaret Spencer. Anna married Horace Leslie Metcalf, son of Jacob Metcalf and Mary Tyler, on Dec 25, 1899 at Venice, Madison County, Illinois. Anna Mary Cook died on Jul 30, 1905 at Venice, Madison County, Illinois, at age 29.

      Branson Edgar Cook was born on Mar 27, 1878 at Hemitite, Jefferson County, Missouri. He was the son of Daniel Quincy Cook and Mary Margaret Spencer. Branson married Maude (Unknown). Branson Edgar Cook died on Aug 31, 1945 at Granite City, Madison County, Illinois, at age 67.
