TH1641 Pension records for Judiah Throp, 1866-1913: Judiah gives a statement from Wellington Kansas in 1890 that his full name is Judiah Wycoff Throp and then signs it J. W. Throp Jack Throp wrote that he has considerable data about Judiah W. According to Jack in his letter dated 7 July 1984: (TH0007) Tunis and Judiah served together in the Civil War, 1st in an Ohio unit and then in 1863? joined the 8th Indiana Cavalry. They both fought at Chickamauga and the siege of Atlanta. (TH0003) (Tunis was wounded in the leg, hospitalized, and "mustered out," there. He returned home.) Judiah went on with Sherman's March to the Sea and through to the end of the war. Judiah was captured by Stonewall Jackson's forces at Harper's Ferry in 1862. (just before the battle of Antietam.) (TH0003) He was parolled and sent home. He went west after the war when the big cattle drives were made from Texas to Kansas. He was a "colorful character and something of a ladies man." According to 4 Sept 1978 let. from Jack to Herman (TH0003): "Judiah was a blacksmith. He lived for many years on the frontier in Kansas servicing the cattle drovers on the Texas trails to the rail heads in Kansas. He lived in two or three small towns along the Oklahoma Indian Territory border. He was Divorced there, met a Missouri woman, moved east to that state for a time and then finally back to Columbus, Ohio where he was a house painter until he died. He had only one child, a daughter from his first wife. She eventually moved to Ohio and had a close association with her Throp grandparents. Later bought their property from the other heirs in Fort Recovery, Mercer Co." Later he moved to Columbus, Ohio where he lived out his life. TH1640 Military records for Judiah Throp, 1861-186? show that he enrolled 23 April 1861 at Fort Recovery Ohio; mustered in June 5, 1861 at Lancaster Ohio; served in Company I, 17th Ohio Infantry at age 18; as Sgt in Company K, 87th Regiment at age 19, and Sgt, Capt Cooper's Co, 87th Reg't Ohio Inf at age 20. Appointed sergeant June 25th 1862. Also served in Co E, 8 Ind Cavalry. Captured and parolled at Harper's Ferry 15 Sept 1862. Back in again: while in Georgia in Nov 1864 he was shoeing a horse and was thrown by the animal and "caried [sic] to Regimental Wagon in an insensible condition....In 1865 "became unable to ride on horseback by reason of chronic diarrhea and piles and was left at a farm house in Greensburg, N.C." Statement from Corporal Eli Keffer, Co. E, 39th Reg 8th Ind Cavalry. At age 19 1/2 he is 5 feet, 8 inches; complexion fair, brown eyes, dark hair. At age 42 in Wellington Kansas he is 5'8 1/2", 140 pounds.

TH1641 shows him living in Clarks Hill, Tippecanoe County, Indiana from 1867 to 1872, in Fredonia Kansas [from 1874] on August 1886 [for the past twelve years]. Also lists his other residences as Lafayette Indiana, Fredonia, Wellington Kansas [March 1890] and Columbus Ohio. Living in Franklin Ohio in 1912. Affadavit from Guthrie Oklahoma shows that he was living there in 1875 employed as a blacksmith and in 1889 was employed at Guthrie City building as headquarters policeman.

Also included is a copy of their Marriage License Application. Both were listed as living in Columbus, Ohio. Earl was listed as 19 years of age and Gordelia as 18. Both were listed as not previously married. Earl listed his occupation as carpenter. It lists A. D. Throp and Sarah Emma Montgomery as his parents and his birth in Columbus. Gordelia listed her birth place as Bucyrus, Ohio and her parents as J. G. Shifley and Mamie B Hainlen (sic) The marriage was performed on 27 March 1911 by W. C. Stevenson, Pastor (the same day as the marriage license application). Marriage certificate No. 25185. [Note: If Gordelia had been married before, it must have been annulled and she was probably under 18 then.]

Said Roy and Gordelia Throp are listed in 1912 city directory for Champlain, Illinois at 510 E. White Street. He indicated that there was hearsay that "Roy" was the biological father of Gladys, whom he later adopted.

TH1702 indicates he might also have been married in house on Indianola Ave, Columbus He moved to San Diego with his wife and children to work in 1926, but couldn't find enough work and returned broke in 1927. He lived in Catawba, Ohio where he had a general store. Gordelia had a bad fall down some stairs there. Dad went to school in a one room school building. May have returned to Columbus after Gordelia's fall. He lived in Chillicothe, about 1929-1936.

W1703 While in Catawba, Earl made and sold sauerkraut and horseradish. He sold them while doing door-to-door selling of W.T. Raleigh products. After Donald joined the Navy (1937) Earl moved back to Columbus and then found a job working on a paper mill in Chillicothe, so moved there. He probably married in Columbus, but probably knew Cenia Mae before that. Don Throp refered to her as only living a few blocks away from where he lived in Chillicothe. He lived in Dayton, Ohio for many years (until he went to Calif. to help build the home of Donald E. Throp and to live there.) He died in a hospital in Auburn, Calif of cancer. Data from Donald E. TH1052 - 1870 census from Three Rivers Michigan shows him as a bookkeeper, living with his wife Clara in the home of his parents.

TH1051 lists him in 1880 Michigan census, St Joseph County, Lockport Twp, town of Three Rivers. He is listed with his wife, Clara, age 31 and son Charles H. Throp, born in Illinois.

TH3740 "Portrait and Biographical Album" of Mecosta County, Michigan has the following biography: Samuel J. Throp, of the firm of Fellows & Throp, druggists, at Big Rapids, was born at Fort Jefferson, Darke Co., Ohio, Oct. 28, 1845, and is a son of John A. Throp, born Oct. 24, 1822, in Monmouth Co., New Jersey, and Catharine Throp, born Dec. 3, 1825, in Warren Co., Ohio. His mother never changed her maiden name, yet there was no relationship traceable. His father was a wagon maker, but on his removal to Three Rivers, Mich., in 1857, became associated with a partnership manufacturing company, in building the celebrated Invincible Vibrating Thresher and general agricultural implements; he sold his interest in the factory March 15,1881, but retained his claims in the patents. In 1867 Mr. Throp went to Troy, Ill., and engaged in the merchant flouring mill of his uncle, Thomas A. Throp, as accountant. The latter died in 1873, and Mr. Throp was appointed administrator of the estate. After an absence of seven years, and the affairs pertaining to the settlement were adjusted, he returned to Three Rivers, and in 1875 became secretary of a new incorporated company, namely, Roberts, Throp & Co., manufacturers of agricultural implements, in which his father had been actively and steadily connected for the past 25 years, being Director and Vice-President as well as General Manager and superintendent. On acount of failing health, simultaneously with his father's active withdrawal from the concern, Mr. Throp and his father sold their half interest in the capitol stock, divided the notes and accounts and retained their share of the same. Their connection therewith had been very laborious and one of great responsibility, yet successful and meritorious in a financial sense. They together engaged in the collection of their outstanding accounts, until September, 1882. During that month Mr. Throp came to Big Rapids and, in partnership with his brother-in-law, C. A. Fellows, purchased a stock of drugs of C. P. Bigelow, M. D., which they removed to their present place of business. They carry the largest stock of drugs and sundries in the city, and have the most complete and tastefully arranged business house, in their line, in Northern Michigan. Their business comprises wholesale as well as retail, and although already extensive, is steadily increasing. Mr. Throp was married at Three Rivers, May 28, 1870, to Clara A., daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Hiles. Mrs. Throp was born in Montour Co., Pa., Aug. 27, 1848. Charles Henry, only child of Mr. and Mrs. Throp, was born at Troy, Ill., Sept 16, '72.
