After leaving the university be entered as a law-student with Mr. Ingersoll, at that time a prominent lawyer of Philadelphia. The profession of law not being to his taste, he abandoned it for that of medicine. At first he studied with Dr. Fenton, of Bucks County, and subsequently with Dr. Benjamin Rush, attending lectures at the University of Pennsylvania. He commenced the practice of medicine in Sussex County, N.J., but on account of the country being wild and sparsely settled, he moved to Pennsylvania, settling at Plymouth Meeting in 1803. While a resident of New Jersey he married Eleanor Conover, an estimable and accomplished lady. After settling at Plymouth he continued the practice of his profession until his death, a period of forty years.

He was considered a skillful physician, and had an extensive practice throughout the county. At that time Conshohocken was a village of about half a dozen houses. As many of his patients lived on the other side of the river throughout Lower Merion, he found it necessary to ford the river at all times and seasons. John Covenhoven was baptized on Apr 21, 1803 at Old Brick Church, Marlboro, Monmouth County, New Jersey. He died on Apr 23, 1803 at age 69. John's estate was proved on May 13, 1803.
John represented Monmouth County in the New Jersey Provincial Assembly and was a member of the Council of Safety in 1775-1776. He was a Colonel of the Monmouth County Militia. He served as a Private during the Revolution; paymaster for Capt Stillwell's Company 1776 circa 1777. He held the position of was President of the 1st Provincial Convention.

In his will dated Dec 14, 1802, John Covenhoven of Freehold mentioned his wife Eleanor, Son Elias and daughter Agnes, and Grandchildren John Covenhoven, Eleanor and Kitty Remsen. His son Elias was executor and the witnesses were Lewis Gordon, David Hance, and Peter Van Kirk.

Covenhoven and Hannah Hankinson, on Oct 18, 1806. Hendrick married Helena Longstreet, daughter of Joseph Longstreet and Hannah Conover, on Oct 18, 1806. Hendrick Hendrickson died on Oct 11, 1811 at Holmdel, Monmouth County, New Jersey, at age 74. Hendrick's estate was proved on Nov 28, 1811.
He was also known as Hendric Hendrickson. He held the position of judje of Monmouth County on Mar 7, 1757. He sold land He bulit a home in Holmdel and sold it to his grandson, Hendrick Longstreet. in 1806. In his will dated Jul 12, 1811, Hendrick Hendrickson of Middletown mantioned among others his wife Helena, daughter Williampe Pitney, and gradsons John and Hendrick Longstreet. The executors were the last named grandson and friend Denise Hendrckson; the witnesses were Elias Hubbard, Garret Hendrickson, and Elkanah Ketcham.
