John W. Kershaw was born on Sep 11, 1838 at Williamson County, Illinois. He was the son of Joseph Kershaw and Hannah Robinson. John married Emeline Buckles, daughter of Abraham Buckles and Mary Ann Williams, on May 1, 1861 at McLean County, Illinois. John married Frances C. (Unknown) circa 1896. John W. Kershaw died on Apr 20, 1923 at age 84. John was buried at Gilmore Cemetery, Empire Twp., McLean County, Illinois.
John W. Kershaw, one of the wealthiest and most extensive land-holders of Downs Township, is the possessor of 518 acres, which constitutes his home farm, and which is located in section 21 and 28. He also owns 300 acres of valuable land in Empire Township, which is highly improved. He has other valuable property in McLean County which he has amassed by the exercise of his excellent business talent and industry. His family is a handsome modern structure, beautifully located, and is the resort of a host of warm friends and acquaintances. In addition to general farming, Mr. Kershaw has of late years given much attention to the raising of fine stock, Short-horn cattle and Poland-China hogs, and in this business has been remarkably successful. He has been the architect of his own fortune, and presents a fine example to the ambitious youth of to-day, of what may be accomplished by having a steady purpose on view, and backed by untiring industry and good judgment.
Mr. Kershaw is a native of this State, and was born in Williamson County, Sept. 11, 1838. His father, Joseph Kershaw, now deceased, settled in Downs Township in 1851, having taken up the last acre of land secured by pre-emption from the Government. Joseph Kershaw was a native of Lancashire, England, where he was reared and learned the spinner's trade, commencing to labor at the early age of twelve years. After arriving at years of manhood, he was married in his native shire to Miss Hannah Robinson, who was also born and reared in Lancashire, and there learned the weaver's trade. After the birth of one child, a daughter, Elizabeth, they resolved to emigrate to the United States. This was in 1831, and after reaching American shores, they proceeded directly to Illinois, settling first in Williamson County, but soon afterward removed to McLean County, where the mother died in March 1858. The second wife of Joseph Kershaw, to whom he was married in Empire Township, was Lucinda Gilmore.
Our subject remained under the roof until his marriage, in Empire Township, in 1860, the lady of his choice being Miss Emaline Buckles. She was born and reared in Empire Township, of which her grandfather was the first settler, locating in what is yet known and Buckles Grove. His son Abraham, the father of Mrs. Kershaw, was married to Miss Mary Williams and both he and his wife are now deceased.
After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Kershaw located on their present homestead, which they have occupied since that time. They have "pulled together;" the wife has labored side by side with her husband in the mutual effort to secure a competency for their later years, and in this they have succeeded. The entire property of Mr. Kershaw aggregates 818 acres, which is drained with over 6,000 rods of tile from three to ten inches in diameter. His herd of cattle includes 150 head, and he feeds annually about that number of hogs. Mr. Kershaw commenced life at the foot of a ladder. His first work was breaking prairie when twelve years old, with a team of five yoke of cattle. When married he could boast of owning 85 only, and gave 83 of that to the minister who married them. His father gave him 815, with which he bought his outfit to commence house keeping.
To our subject and his wife there have been born thirteen children, three of whom died in infancy: Joseph married Miss Rosa Myers, and is farming in Empire Township; John W. married Miss Gertrude Dodds of Saybrook, and lives in Empire Township; Cloa E. Became the wife of Samuel R. Morton, and lives in Lamont, Cook Co., Ill; Lizzie married John F. Welch, of whom a sketch is given in another part of this Album; Burr, Lucinda, Robert, William C., Ruth E., and Samuel are at home with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Kershaw are prominently connected with the United Brethren Church, and our subject politically is connected with the Democratic party. A handsome view of his residence and pleasant home is shown in another page of this work.

For a number of years his health had been broken, and was seldom seen outside his own home, but those who knew Him best believed he was an upright Christian man.

William Rial Buckles was born on Jul 10, 1819 at White County, Illinois. He was born on Oct 7, 1819 at White County, Illinois. He was the son of Robert B. Buckles and Mary Birks. William married Mary Ann Scroggin, daughter of Carter Tarrant Scroggin and Phebe Shelby, on Oct 12, 1841 at Logan County, Illinois. William Rial Buckles died on Oct 2, 1885 at Mount Pulaski, Logan County, Illinois, at age 65. William was buried at Carlyle Cemetery, Mount Pulaski, Logan County, Illinois.
He was also known as William Riley Buckles.
William R. Buckles, deceased, was the eldest son of Robert and Polly Buckles, and was born July 10, 1819, in White County, Illinois. In 1819 he came with his parents to Lake Fork, and spent his entire life here as a farmer. Perhaps no man who ever lived in Logan County was more successful as a hunter. In the days of his young manhood game of all kinds abounded in the timber on the prairies, and hundreds of deer, turkeys, wolves, etc., have been slain by him. As a bee-hunter he excelled all, even in his later days pursuing this amusement and more zeal and success than any younger and more active man. He located on the farm where he died and where his widow now lives, in 1841. He was married October 12, 1841, to Mary A. Scroggin, born November 27, 1820, in Gallatin County, Illinois, coming with her people to Logan County early in 1827. She is the daughter of Carter T. Scroggin. Mr. Buckles died February 11, 1885, and is buried in the Carlysle burying-ground, the last resting-place of so many of the early settlers of Lake Fork. Both Mr. and Mrs. Buckles were for about forty years connected with the Lake Fork Christian church, Mr. Buckles being a trustee of it for most of the time. At his death his larfe landed estate was willed to his wife and children, save two acres, which he dedicated to religious purposes. His children were--Louisa, who married James T. Wright, and died April 2, 1878, leaving three children, who have the care of a parent in their grandmother: Phebe C. Buckles, born November 30, 1842, married D. C. Ridgeway: H. H. Buckles, born November 30, 1845, now a prosperous hardware merchant of Oxford, Kansas: C. T. Buckles, born October 15, 1848, residing with his mother on the homestead, and R. F. Buckles, born June 16, 1850, now State's Attorney of Brown County, Kansas. All the children were born on the Lake Fork Homestead, which was the first settled farm in the area.

PROMINENT SETTLER DEAD
John Buckles, Resident of Mt. Pulaski for Over Eighty Years, No More
John Buckles died at his home in Mt. Pulaski at 7:40 Tuesday evening, July 6, 1909. He was born in White County, Illinois, on Oct. 7, 1822, and at the time of his death was aged 86 years, 8 months, and 29 days. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 9, 1909, at the Christian church in Mt. Pulaski, Rev. D. A. Lindsay of Deer Creek officiating, assisted by the pastor of the church, Rev. Gilbert Jones, and Rev. L. M. Robinson. The interment will be in the Steenbergen Cemetery, where in 1878 he purchased a lot twenty-six feet square and, at the cost of $2500, prepared it for the burial of himself and family, placing in the center a vault for the reception of the bodies of himself and wife.
The life history of John Buckles is an interesting one and a bound autobiography was published in 1897. When but three months old, his father moved to Logan County, and he was reared to manhood in this unbroken country, in the forest close to Lake Fork. In 1847 he married the daughter of a neighbor, Esther J. Scroggin, and to them were born four children, of who three sons survive, Elias B. and John M. of Mt. Pulaski and Derius of Niantic.
Mr. Buckles early engaged in farming and in stock raising and was very successful, accumulating during his long life a large fortune, represented mostly in Logan County land. Mr. Buckles was one of the most prominent figures of the old settlers' reunions, being one of the few "snowbirds" remaining to tell of the great snow of the winter of 1830-31, and over ten years ago was awarded the gold cane at the Atlanta fair for being the oldest settler present who lived on land homesteaded from the government.

In 1822, when John Buckles was three weeks old, his parents left White County, Illinois, to find and make a home in that part of central Illinois now known as Logan County. John was the third child, and on this journey was carried in the arms of his mother, who rode on horseback. The distance was about 150 miles as the crow flies. The hardships of such a trip are unknown to most people of this day.
At that time there were only six families living within the present boundaries of Logan County. John's father, Robert Buckles, was a man of iron mold. Without the education of schools, he answered clearly all the questions that pertained to his business and life. At the outbreak of the Black Hawk War he was one of the first to enlist, and bunked with and fought side by side with Abraham Lincoln.
John's mother, Mary ("Polly") Birks Buckles, was one of the uncrowned heroines of history. She was the mother of fifteen children. The family residence was a mud-daubed cabin. In this for many years she did all the cooking before an open fireplace, made all the clothing for her family from the raw materials, and when her husband was absent from home at some distant market, or at war, she would fell the trees and cut the wood for use during the cold winters. It was a new land upon which the Buckles babies first looked out. Small growths of trees skirted the streams of water, and the wide prairies, reaching out in every direction to the horizon, were seas of grass and wild flowers. Wolves howled, foxes stole and wildcats screamed. Great herds of agile deer moved gracefully hither and thither, and countless thousands of wild chickens made the prairies vocal with their thrummings in the early mornings of spring.
And there were ‘coons in those days. Later in his life, John Buckles said: "Well do I remember the winter I captured thirty of these midnight travelers, and the day I received my first money--fifteen dollars in silver--for their hides. It was one of the happiest events of my life." He attended school altogether about one year. The house was made of logs, with the ground for a floor, split logs for seats and the children's knees for desks.
In his early manhood he assisted his father in driving hogs to Racine, Wisconsin, and sheep to St. Louis, Missouri. In his twenty-second year he helped a neighbor drive a herd of cattle to the New York City market, and again in the following year, 1845. It was he who led the largest ox before the drove. The time required for the round trip was 130 days--one hundred in going and thirty in returning. His pay was twelve dollars per calendar month. Such experiences cultivated his inbred industry and thrift, taught him independence of judgment and self-reliance, and developed his sagacity, courage and force.
By commendable methods as farmer and stockman, he accumulated good property and lived a long and useful life. He was an open foe of the organized liquor traffic, a helpful friend of our college and a sincere disciple of our Lord. His life is a heritage to his children and his children's children.

PIONEER LADY DEAD
Mrs. Mary Ann Buckles, of Mt. Pulaski Township, Passes Away
Mrs. Mary Ann Buckles, wife of Wm. R. Buckles, died at the family home four miles west of Mt. Pulaski, at 2 o'clock a.m., Thursday, Oct. 29, 1891, aged 70 years, 11 months, and 2 days. Funeral services occur today at the Buckles church at 11 o'clock. Interment in Carlyle Cemetery, and services conducted by Elder A. J. Kain of Springfield.
The deceased was taken suddenly ill Monday, declining to enervating congestion, until the end. Only the week before she was in town in apparently fair health. Her death was so unlooked for that but few relatives were present at her demise.
Her son, though telegraphed for at his home in Hiawatha, Kansas, arrived too late to meet once more the dearest of all earthly love, a mother. Mrs. Buckles was of a pioneer family and, in her early days, this was a vast unsettled prairie. Her companion, Wm. R. Buckles, who died Feb. 11, 1885, was among the most sturdy builders up of this now prosperous country. They were an exemplary pair of good citizens, who had undergone the cares and hardships of early pioneer life, leaving a goodly inheritance, in example, as well as in the substantials of life, to their offspring. Both were members of the Christian church. Their living children are Henry H., of Oxford, Kan; Mrs. Darrell H. Ridgeway, of Copeland settlement, Mt. Pulaski township; Robert F., an attorney of Hiawatha, Kansas; and Carter T., who has always lived at home and is single. A daughter, Mrs. James W. Wright, died April 2, 1878. Mrs. Buckles was one of ten children of Mr. and Mrs. Carter T. Scroggin, seven of who survive, namely: L. K., Russell P., Marion, of Sheridan, Oregon; Thomas J. and Carter T., Mrs. John Buckles, and Mrs. C. K. Lucas. The deceased brothers and sisters are Humphrey, who died in 1856; Mrs. John H. Lucas, in 1882; and Mrs. W. R. Buckles, the subject of this article. The husband of the deceased, Wm. R. Buckles, was one of 15 sons and daughters born of Robert and Mary Buckles, respectively deceased in 1866 and 1887, all of whom grew to man and womanhood, namely: Wm. R., Jeremiah, John, Mrs. L. K. Scroggin, Mrs. S. M. Copeland, Andrew, Peter, Chalton C., Mrs. Abner Copeland, Robert, Wiley, Henry H., Mrs. Henry Freeman, Mrs. Dan Handlin, and Mrs. Wm. H. Sams. Those deceased respectively are Peter, Mrs. L. K. Scroggin, Chalton C., Jeremiah, Wm. R., and Riley. History will mark the pathway of this family and name in the generations to follow. The pioneer of early statehood will be honored and his worth and achievements celebrated in centuries to come. Then the song will be, all hail to our ancestors of the 19th century.

LEONARD K. SCROGGIN.
Starting out in life with the desire of leaving a record behind him of actions and deeds that should benefit mankind, Leonard K. Scroggin, perhaps the oldest native resident of Central Illinois, achieved not only his great desire, but also that substantial success which almost invariably comes to those who follow the simple rules of rigid honesty in deeds and words and who are not afraid of work. He resolved that he would never tell a lie and those of his lifelong friends who are left know he has kept his resolve. Another resolve was that he would never acquire a debt which he could not pay, and this, too, is a resolve he has ever kept, as his substantial increase in wealth has shown, nearly all his holdings being farming or city properties, all of which are without encumbrance. Of the earlier settlers of the state few are left who knew it as a territory, yet Mr. Scroggin was born just one month after it became a state and he has been an active participant in its development. He was born in Gallatin county, Illinois, January 25, 1819, being the eldest child in a family of ten children born to Carter T. and Phoebe (Shelby) Scroggin, pioneer settlers of the territory.
Carter T. Scroggin was a son of Humphrey Scroggin, of Kentucky, who was, in the language of an early historian, "one of the boys of '76 who did service in George Washington's colonial armies, his home the colony of North Carolina, and was at Yorktown to look with pleasure on the thousands of Cornwallis' redcoats as they laid down their arms." Carter Scroggin married Phoebe Shelby in the territory of Illinois in 1818. He passed away in the sixty-fourth year of his age in 1859. His wife followed him seventeen years later, being in her eightieth year lacking one month at the time of her death. Mr. Scroggin was of Welsh descent as was his wife, who was a native of Tennessee. He followed farming all his life and at the time of his death owned over six hundred acres of land. He was a man of decided strength of character and of rigid honesty and was one of the leading men of the community in which he lived.
Leonard K. Scroggin worked upon his father's farm during his boyhood days, acquiring an education through the medium of the subscription schools, which were the only schools in vogue at that time. Until he was married he remained with his parents, assisting them in the development of their farm which they had secured under land patents from the government when first they came to settle in the new western territory. It was in the month of March, 1841, that Leonard K. Scroggin and Lavina Buckles were united in marriage. She was a daughter of Robert and Mary Buckles, natives of Tennessee, who had come into Illinois in early pioneer days. She was the fifth child in a family of thirteen children and was born in this state in 1825. To this union there was born a family of ten children. The eldest, Alfred C., was born in May, 1842, and married Miss Frances Phillips, a native of Illinois. They, now make their home in Logan county and are the parents of three children, all of whom are married. Mary, born in November, 1843, became the wife of William Gasaway, of Illinois, and the mother of three children. She died in Sumner county, Kansas. Angeline, born in 1845, married John Rothwell, of Mount Pulaski, and is the mother of two sons and two daughters. Eveline, born in 1847, married George Veal of this state and became the mother of one child. Her death occurred five years after here marriage. Annie, born in 1849, married John Wells of this state and died in 1906. She was the mother of one child. Armanda J., born in October, 1852, married Martin Luther Turley, who now lives in Kansas and she is the mother of three children. Sarah Ellen, born in 1857, married W. G. Whittle, of Mount Pulaski township, and died in 1906. She had two children. Susan, born in 1859, married Henry Suttle, of Kenney, Illinois, where she now resides. She is the mother of three children. L. B. Scroggin, born in 1860, married Grace Lyttle, a daughter of a prominent family of Illinois. They live in Arkansas and have no children. Benjamin F., born in 1863, married Arthilda Gasaway, of this state, and lives in Nebraska. He is the father of three children. Mrs. Lavina Scroggin passed away in January, 1863, following the birth of her youngest son. In March, 1864, Mr. Scroggin married Mrs. Rhoda A. Pickering, the widow of Thomas Pickering, by whom she had a daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Maurie, who is now a widow and makes her home with Mr. and Mrs. Scroggin. Four children were born of the second marriage, namely : George C., born April 15, 1865, died in infancy. Thomas A., born in 1867, now lives in Mount Pulaski. He wedded Mary Wisenberger and had five children, four of whom are still living. Hubert W., born in April, 1871, married Luella Shoup, by whom he had two children, and his death occurred in July, 1894. Edna K., born in 1876, is . the wife of A. L. Anderson, an attorney of Lincoln, and they have two children.
Mrs. Scroggin, who bore the maiden name of Rhoda A. Girtman, was born in Lake Fork township, this county, on the 6th of October, 1835, and comes of German ancestry. Her parents, George and Mary A. Girtman, were among the pioneer settlers of Logan county, first locating in Mount Pulaski, where they entered land which was later purchased by Carter Scroggin. Later they took up their abode in Lake Fork township, there spending the remainder of their lives.
After his first marriage, in 1841, Mr. Scroggin located upon land which he had entered from the government in Mount Pulaski Township, having secured forty acres of prairie land and a like amount of timber land. Since that time he has resided upon this property and as time has passed he has steadily added to his possessions, so that he now has ten hundred and twenty acres of very valuable farming land on sections 26, 27, 34 and 35, Mount Pulaski township. Although almost ninety-two years of age he still oversees the operation of this vast farm and attends to his various other business interests, which are extensive. He is a man of remarkable business ability and through his own well directed efforts has become one of the wealthiest men of central Illinois. In Logan and adjoining counties he owns forty-five hundred acres of very valuable land ; has ten thousand acres in Canada and the same amount in Minnesota ; four thousand acres in Nebraska ; two thousand acres in Kansas ; one thousand acres in Missour. and three hundred and twenty acres in Indiana.
This vast estate has been acquired by following the dictates of his sound business instincts and the motto which he made early in life : Never tell a lie and never acquire a debt that could not be paid. It is a splendid record—one of which anyone might well feel proud. Yet Mr. Scroggin thinks not so much of the wealth he has acquired as of the means whereby it has come, maintaining always that the modern methods of acquiring wealth, some of which are questionable, give no pleasure to the possessor if one has wronged his fellowmen in securing it. In his younger days he knew Lincoln, Douglas, Baker, Logan and still others who made history in the last half century, and among such men as these he learned the lessons of life which have stood him in good stead throughout his long and honorable life. In 1872 he founded the Scroggin Bank of Mount Pulaski and is yet identified with that institution. A lifelong democrat, he has always voted for the candidate of that party at every presidential election since Buchanan. But once did he bolt the ticket and that was during the first campaign of the advocate of free silver, when he voted with those supporting the gold standard. With his wife Mr. Scroggin is a member of the Christian church of Mount Pulaski and the lives of the couple are actuated by their Christian belief and they are worthy recipients of the esteem in which both are held.
