      DOCTORS SCARCE IN EARLY DAYS
In those early days of Burrton's history, doctors had not yet discovered this little prairie town. (The population of Burrton was 255 at the time of its incorporation.) But a lady lived here who acted as midwife and general practitioner for all the settlers. She was Mrs. Leicester Day and she lived where the Bruce Wilson family lives now. Mrs. Day was one of the most valuable persons in the community. An early day friend of mine told me that he once had a case of acute indigestion. His family sent for Mrs. Day, and after she had given him a dose of her medicine the pain ceased in less than fifteen minutes.
Mrs. Day also kept a boarding house to accomodate transients and drummers (salesmen to the younger generation), and one day a Mr. Dickey of Newton on his way to Hutchinson stopped at her house for dinner. He finished the meal before the others and on his way out, he passed by the cook stove. He could smell a delicious aroma coming from the oven and he asked Mrs. Day what she was cooking. She told him it was a wild goose. "Well", he said, "I'll be coming back for supper. Save me some of the goose." When he returned, she had to tell him that it was not a goose but that she did not dare tell him before the other boarders that it was a skunk. She was rendering the oil from it for some patients she had. Of course she had removed the disagreeable effluvia from the creature before she put it in the oven. Mrs. Day told me the story with many a chuckle.

Death of Grandma Day
Mrs. Leicester Day died suddenly at her home in this city last Saturday, of heart failure. She had been in her usual health and the only indication of an approaching end was when she dropped into a chair and breathed her last.
Christine Curly was born Oct. 8, 1823, in Livingston Co., New York. Was married to Leicester Day in Trumble Co., Ohio, on the 31st day of Dec. 1844, resided in the state of Ohio about 11 years from there they removed to Grand (Grant) Co., Wisconsin, where they resided until 1871, when they moved to Kansas, near Burrton, at which place she resided until her death Nov. 15, 1901. Age 78 years, 1 month and 7 days.
She was left a widow in 1897, her companion having preceded her to his eternal home on the fourth day of August. She was the mother of nine children, one, Estella, dying in infancy, and Kate Hale, deceased. She leaves three sons and four daughters to mourn her loss, all living near Burrton, with the exception on one daughter, Elmira Darstow, who resides in California.
The funeral services were held from the Christian Church Sunday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. Hensley of Halstead. The remains were laid to rest in the Burrton Cemetery.

John Clifton Dole, 85, Burrton, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 1988 at Burrton. He was born Feb. 10, 1903, at Burrton. He married Ruth Stanley, at Hutchinson on April 15, 1922. She died July 3, 1982. He was a retired sexton at the Burrton Cemetery. He had lived in Burrton all of his life except for five years when he lived in Buhler.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, Burrton.

Survivors include four sons, James R. and Michael, both of Burrton; Richard L., Maricopa, Calif., and Stanley, Wichita; Three daughters, Margery Howell and Lavonne Jeffrey, both of Burrton; and Ruth Ann Banks , Snyder, Tex; one sister, Mildred Heidbrecht, Burrton; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday, Dec. 17, at the church with the Rev. William Winslow, Jr.. Burial was in the Burrton Cemetery.

Mrs. Ruth M. Dole, 77, Burrton, died July 3 at the Halstead Hospital after a short illness. She was born Ruth Stanley Oct. 15, 1904, in Reno County. She married Clifton Dole April 15, 1922, at Hutchinson. She was a longtime Burrton resident.

Survivors include her husband of the home; sons: Richard, Fellows, Calif; Stan, Wichita; James R., Willowbrook; Michael, Burrton; Daughters; Lavon Jeffrey, Versailles, Mo; Margie Howell, Hutchinson; Ruth Ann Banks, Snyder, Tex; brothers: William E. Stanley, La Grange Park, Ill; H.H. (Bill) Stanley, Hutchinson; sisters: Grace Hill, Haven; Mabel Hudson, and Blanche Bottoms, both of Hutchinson; Jo Eshom, Burrton; Alice Collins, Lansing; Florence Blair, Lyons; and Eleanor Eicholtz, Colorado Springs, Colo; 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday morning, July 6, at the First Christian Church, Burrton, with the Rev. Lynn Dickson conducting. Burial was in the Burrton Cemetery.

WILLIAM DOLE SUCCUMBS

A resident of Burrton for 62 years, William Dole succumbed Tuesday morning at his home after suffering a paralytic stroke earlier in the morning. He was 82 years old. His wife died three years ago after 57 years of married life.

Mr. Dole came to Kansas when he was 12 years old and to Burrton in 1882. The family home is located on the highway a mile west of Burrton.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Heidebrecht and Mrs. Melvina Forbes of Burrton and Mrs. A. J. Nicholson of Wichita; and three sons, Bob and Clifton of Burrton, and Henry of Hutchinson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Christian church, and burial will be in the Burrton cemetery.

RITES HELD TODAY FOR MRS. DOLE

Mrs William Dole, a pioneer resident of this commumity, died at her home Monday night at 10:30 after a serious illness of three days. She was 77 years old and had lived in this community 70 years.

She suffered a paralytic stroke three years ago and had not been strong since that time. Her death was attributed to a heart attack.

She came to Burrton at the age of seven years with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Haney, of Wisconsin. She is survived by her husband, three daughters, Mrs. Andy Nicholson of Walnut, Kas., Mrs. Lloyd Heidebrecht of Burrton, and Mrs. Melvina Forbes of the home; three sons, Henry of Hutchinson, Bob and Clifton of Burrton; and one step-sister, Mrs. Mary Haney of Boulder, Colo. She was preceded in death by two sons, Harry and Earl.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 this afternoon at the Christian church with the Rev. M. J. Duncan of Hutchinson officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. C. Willis Schnelle. Burial was in Burrton Cemetery.

Isaac Henry Haney died on Oct 29, 1898 at Burrton, Harvey County, Kansas, at age 62; Heart Disease.
     He began military service in 1862; Co. "H' 25th Regt. Wisc. Vol. Inf. Sandy Complexion, Hazel Eyes, Chestnut Hair. Co. "B" 43rd Wisc. Vol in 1864. ISAAC H. HANEY, farmer, Section 20, P. O. Burrton, owns 160 acres, 150 in cultivation, ten acres in pasture; one and one-half miles of hedge; dwelling 16 x 24, L 10 x 24, kitchen 10 x 16; porch, 10 x 24; barn, 24 x 32. Has fifteen acres bearing orchard, five acres cultivated timer; also one mile of cottonwood hedge. His farm is in a fine state of cultivation. Has seven horse and mules, ten head of cattle and thirty hogs. Also owns property in Burrton valued at $1,500. Was born in Ohio, August 14, 1836, and moved with his parents to Wisconsin, when a child of nine years of age. In July, 1862, he enlisted in Company H, Twenty-fifth Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, but was discharged for disability in the same year. Enlisted again in 1864, in Company B, Forty-third Wisconsin and with his regiment served in Kentucky and Tennessee, and resisted Hood's advance from Bridgeport, Ala., back to Franklin and Nashville, and was taken sick after the Nashville fight and sent to the hospital at Quincy, and mustered out for total disability in the spring of 1865. He came to Kansas in December, 1871, and located his present claim after traveling over portions of Harvey, Sedgwick and Reno counties. Homestead entry was made January 3, 1872. He then returned to Wisconsin and sold what effects he could not bring with him and started to Kansas, March 21, with his family, in two wagons with fifty-six dollars in money. After a hard and laborious trip over muddy roads, he landed on his present farm, with his family of himself and wife and two small children, with only $2.50 and nothing to live upon. The prospect was gloomy, but they went to work in earnest. His wife hired to work out and he engaged at freighting from the end of the railroad to Hutchinson and in a short time had enough to build a small house and in the spring broke ten acres of ground. About this time his horses, not being acclimated, gave out, so he had to go to work on the railroad three months. In the fall, he put up a sod stable and still worked on the railroad and by overwork, cleared $85.00 in two months. When the road reached Fort Dodge he left and returned home and on his way saw the whole county filled with an immence herd of buffalo.The next spring he put in a crop and hunted buffalo and got his meat and fifty dollars from this source. This year the grasshoppers ate him out. He got a job whenever he could of any description. When the Mennonites came in, he hauled lumber for them at a very low rate and managed to get enough to live upon; having two teams, he put his little boy, only seven years old, on one and he took the other and managed in this way. When the aid came for those who were in need, he never applied for or received any and the only thing he ever got in this way was a government overcoat as he felt entitled to that as an old soldier. Since that time he has been steadily advancing in means, every year doing something more on his place and while his team were resting at noon he was planting out trees and at night while others were in bed he was making improvements on his place. Was married, July 2, 1863, to Miss Malvina Day, a native of Ohio. They have two children -- Estella and Alva. He is a member of the G. A. R. and has served on the School Board for three years, having been one of the first board on organization of the district.

I. H. HANEY DEAD
Isaac Henry Haney died last Friday at his home north-west of Burrton, of heart trouble, after an illness of only a few days. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, August 14, 1836, moved with his parents to Wisconsin in 1845. Was married to Melvina A. Day, his now bereaved widow, in 1863. He was one of the pioneers in this part of the country, locating near Burrton in 1872. He was a soldier of the civil war, serving in Co. B, 43rd Regiment Wisconsin Volunteers.
He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his departure from this life. The funeral services were held Tuesday morning, in charge of Rev. McLain of the Christian church in Halstead.

      Leicester Day was born on Apr 4, 1823 at Marlborough, Vermont. Leicester married Christine Curley, daughter of William Curley and Catriena Stryker, on Dec 31, 1844 at Johnston, Ohio. Leicester Day died on Aug 4, 1897 at Burrton, Harvey County, Kansas, at age 74. Leicester was buried at Burrton Cemetery, Burrton, Harvey County, Kansas.
     He resided at at Ohio in 1834. He resided at at Wisconsin in 1855. He began military service on Aug 19, 1861; Co. F 7th WI Infantry. He began military service circa 1862; Corp. Company "F" 7th Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. McDowell's Construction Corp. Enlisted 19 August 1861-Discharged 1 September 1864 Ellenboro, Grant County, Wisconsin. Light Complexion, Hazel Eyes. He resided at at Kansas in 1871. LEICESTER DAY, farmer, Section 20, P. O. Burrton, owns 160 acres, 100 under cultivation, twenty-five acres fenced with barb wire. Small grove and dwelling 24 x 28 feet, one and one half stories, stable, carpenter shop and outbuildings for stock. Was born in Vermont, in 1823, and when eleven years of age moved with his parents to Ohio. In 1855, he moved to Wisconsin. In 1861, he enlisted in Company F., Seventh Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and went with his command to the army of the Potomac, and being a mechanic, was detailed in McDowell's Construction Corps and was never actively engaged, although under fire a number of times while constructing bridges and laying pontoons and was present in most of the engagements from second Bull Run to Petersburg. In laying the pontoons at Fredericksburg, was under heavy fire, and at Gettysburg being then in the Pioneer corps, he helped carry General Reynolds off the field, when he was killed by Rebel shooters. In the advance of General Grant's army in 1864, was continually on the front laying bridges for the artillery and in many a close place, and was mustered out near the Weldon R. R. below Petersburg, September 8, 1864. Came from Wisconsin to Kansas and located on his present farm June 30, 1871, and the nearest house was four miles away and had to haul his supplies from Peabody, then the end of the R. R. and lived for quite a time in his wagon, until he got his house up. When the R. R. arrived at Newton, the buildings of Hutchinson in Reno County also commenced shortly after and he being on the direct road between the two places, kept a stage station, called the half-way house, and had a great deal of custom. Has had as many as thirty-eight teams at one time over night. When the town of Burrton was laid out, being a carpenter, he erected a number of the buildings in town, and for three years kept a hotel and feed stable and narrowly escaped being burnt out by prairie fires which destroyed a great deal of property in this vicinity. Was married December 30, 1844, to Miss Christine Curley, a native of Sparta, N. Y. They have eight children -- Malvina A., Elmina D., Catharine M., George, Riley, Pluma J., William W., Hannah Ida, and Giles L. Was on the School Board two terms in Wisconsin and the second Treasurer of Burton Township.
