Voorhies, Robert D., M. D., of Lafayette, La., was born March 10, 1872, at St. Martinsvllle, in the parish of St. Martin; the son of Felix Voorhies, a native of the parish of St. Martin, who was born Jan. 1, 1839, and is a resident of the town of Lafayette. Felix Voorhies was educated at Spring Hill college, near Mobile, Ala., and at the Jesuits' college of St. Charles, Grand Coteau, St. Landry parish, La. He studied law in the office of his brother, Judge Albert Voorhies, in New Orleans, and was admitted to practice after passing an examination before the Louisiana State Supreme court. When the Civil war broke out in 1861, Mr. Voorhies abandoned his professional labors at St. Martinsville, and enlisted in the Confederate army, serving in the 3rd Louisiana infantry regiment until the close of hostilities. Resuming the practice of law in St. Martinsville, Mr. Voorhies attained prominence, and in 1892 was elected judge of the district court re-elected in 1896, declined another term in 1900, and went back to the bar until 1912 when he resigned, and retired to private life. Mr. Voorhies is the author of a very interesting work, "Acadian Reminiscences," and has written a large number of short stories. His wife, Miss Modeste Pothier, was born in St. Martin parish, a descendant of an Acadian family that settled in Louisiana in the latter part of the 18th century. The Voorhies family came from Holland to America in 1620, and subsequently to Kentucky, whence they removed to Louisiana. Some of their descendants were distinguished in professional life in the state; Cornelius Voorhies, paternal grandfather of Dr. Robert D. Voorhies, was one of the justices of the Louisiana State Supreme court; and Hon. Albert Voorhies, his son, was lieutenant-governor of the state, and a prominent member of the New Orleans bar. Dr. Robert D. Voorhies is the 5th in a family of 12 children, in order of birth as follows: Edward G., a lawyer, who was clerk of the district court at Lafayette for 12 years, and died in 1911, aged 51 years; Felix E., traveling salesman in Texas, and contractor for the Briggs-Weaver Machinery Co., of Dallas, Tex; Dan W., lawyer, of St. Martinville; Charles L., salesman for A. Baldwin & Co., of New Orleans; Robert D., and Albert P. (twins), Albert P. having died in 1907, in New Iberia, where he followed the profession of dentist; Cecile, now Mrs. Louis Babin, of West Baton Rouge; Paul E., superintendent of Simon's foundry, at New Iberia, La; Lucie, wife of August Gasie, of West Baton Rouge; Walter F., cashier of the First National bank, Shreveport, La; J. S., an accountant, residing in New Orleans, and Maude, wife of Frank Dauterive, residents of Abbeville, La. The subject of this sketch was educated in the schools of St. Martinville, and at St. Martin college. He entered the National Institute of Pharmacy, Chicago, in 1890, graduating in 1892, and then taking up the study of medicine at Hahnemann Medical college, Chicago, finishing his course in 1895 and returning to Louisiana to begin the practice of his profession in New Iberia for 3 years; next, in New Orleans until 1905, and since that year, in Lafayette. He has been associated for the past 2 years with Dr. F. E. Girard, specializing in the treatment of diseases of the eye, ears, nose, and throat. Dr. Voorhies is a member of the Roman Catholic church; and in fraternal circles is affiliated with the Elks, the Woodmen of the World, Ben Hur order, the Mooses, and the Knights of Columbus. He is a member of the Lafayette parish Medical association, the Attakapas Clinical society, the Louisiana State Medical society, the American Medical association; ex-president of the Parish Medical association; ex-vice president of the Attakapas Clinical society, and is physician for the Southwestern Industrial institute of Lafayette; also a promoter and stockholder of the Attakapas sanitarium. In Oct., 1899, Dr. Voorhies married Miss Margaret Ann Davis, daughter of John Davis, formerly a merchant of New Iberia. They have 3 children, Robert D., Mary Margaret, and Coerte Albert Voorhies.

Know all men by these presents that We Cornelius Voorhies, Joseph Gradenigo, Etienne Lamorandiere fils, Robert Rogers, Robert Taylor, John Andrus, and
Augustin Gradenigo are held and firmly bound unto William C. C. Claiborne Governor of the State of Louisiana and to his successors in office in the sum of six thousand dollars -Which said sum We hereby bind ourselves, Our heirs, Executors and Adms, to pay as aforesaid -Whereas the above bound Cornelius Voorhies hath been appointed Sheriff of the Parish of Saint Landry -Now if the said Cornelius Voorhies shall well and faithfully execute and make good returns according to Law of all such Writs Orders and process [proceed?] as shall come in to his hands as Sheriff aforesaid, and well and truly pay over al sums of money that shall come into his hands as Sheriff aforesaid to the person entitled by Law to the same-and shall faithfully do and perform all such other duties as may be required of him by law, then the above Obligation to be void-otherwise to remain in full force and virtue-Done at Opelousas this 14 May 1813.

CHARLES H. VOORHIES, ST. MARTINVILLE.--Mr. Voorhies is a native of Louisiana, born in the town of St. Martinville, in St. Martin parish. He is the son of
Alfred Voorhies, who was also a native of St. Martinville, where he resided until the time of his death. His mother, Euphrosine (Olivier) Voorhies was born in St. Martinville, where she was reared and married. She is the daughter of Diflonville and Enoine Olivier.

Charles Voorhies was reared in St. Martinville, where he obtained a common school education. He began life at the age of fourteen years, as a manual
laborer. In 1886 he was elected chief constable, which position he has held since.

He married Miss Amelia Campbell, daughter of Levi and Almide (Landry) Campbell. She is a native of St. Martinville, and was born May 8, 1860. Her mother is still living in St. Martinville. Her father has been dead for a number of years.

Mr. and Mrs. Voorhies are the parents of three living children, viz: Erme, Charles, Birdie. In politics Mr. Voorhies is a stanch Democrat. Mr. Voorhies is descended from an old and highly honored family of the Acadian pioneers, and is proud of his descent.

Felix married Modeste Potier, daughter of Charles Potier and Marcelite Broussard, on Oct 17, 1859 at Saint Martin Parish, Louisiana. Col. Felix Voorhies died on Aug 21, 1919 at Saint Martin Parish, Louisiana, at age 80. Felix was buried at Saint Martin de Tours Church, Saint Martinville, Saint Martin Parish, Louisiana.

COL. FELIX VOORHIES, ST. MARTINVILLE.--Without a sketch of the Voorhies family, a history of Southwest Louisiana would be incomplete. Members of this family have figured prominently, not only in local affairs, but in the history of the nation. The family is of direct Holland ancestry, the first member in America, Corté Alberts Van Voor Hies, having been a native of Holland. He located in New Jersey about the year 1600. The latter part of the name, signifying " near the town of Hees," has only been retained by the descendants. Of this ancestor, Corté Alberts Van Voor Hies was twice married; first in Holland, and the second time in New Jersey. He became the father of ten children, most of whom were born in Holland. They located in different States of the Union, a son, Cornelius, becoming domiciled in Kentucky. He was the father of three children, of whom Cornelius, the grandfather of the subject of this sketch, was one.

Cornelius Voorhies was reared and received his education in Kentucky. He removed to St. Landry parish, Louisiana, early in life, where he married Aimee
Gradenigo, a descendant of the distinguished Gradenigo family of Venice. Cornelius Voorhies afterward removed to Avoyelles parish, where he served as
sheriff and parish judge. He reared a family of six children, to-wit: William, Cornelius, father of our subject; Clarissa, Horace F., Gradenigo P., and Eulalie. Cornelius Voorhies, the father of Felix Voorhies, was born in 1803, in Avoyelles parish. He received a limited education, and at an early age began the study of law in St. Martinsville, being admitted to the bar in 1825. He first located in Lafayette parish, where he practised [sic] for four or five years, when he located in St. Martinville, and devoted himself to his law practice for several years. He was elected district attorney, in which capacity he served for some time, and was afterward elected State Senator. Subsequent to this he served for a period as district judge, and in 1853 he was elected associate justice of the Supreme Court, in which position he served until within a short while before his death, August, 1859. Mr. Voorhies was noted for his firmness and the closeness with which he adhered to his principles. Further mention is made of him in the history of the bench and bar of St. Martin parish.

Col. Felix Voorhies was educated at St. Charles College, Grand Coteau; Spring hill, Alabama; and completed his studies at the Jesuits' College, New Orleans.
He studied law in St. Martinville, and was admitted to the bar before the Supreme Court in Opelousas in 1860, since which time he has practised in St.
Martinville. Mr. Voorhies enlisted in the Confederate service in 1861 in Company C, Eighth Louisiana Regiment, and was assigned to duty in Virginia. He was in active service until the latter part of 1862, when he was discharged on account of disability. After recuperating he again entered service as captain of the Independent Cavalry Company D the latter part of 1863, and was stationed in Louisiana for about a year. Later he was detailed to bureau duty.

After the war Col. Voorhies returned home and resumed his law practice. In 1874 he was elected representative of St. Martin parish in the State Legislature, and served one term. Col. Voorhies, as have been his ancestors, is an ardent Democrat, though he does not take an exceedingly prominent part in local affairs. Since his service in the Legislature he has never held any public office. The Colonel has devoted much of his leisure time to literature, and is a writer of recognized merit. He has written a number of comedies in French, some of which have received high commendation. His "Blanche Duvart," or "A Louisiana Romance," was reprinted in both Canada and France. Col. Voorhies has for many years been a regular contributor to the leading French papers in the United States, and his "Louisiana Sketches" in the New York Independent have been widely read and admired. His "Reminiscences of an Old Acadian is his only attempt in English. Col. Voorhies has largely contributed to local papers; and was for four years editor of the Observer, now the Reveille, of St. Martinville.

He was married in October, 1859, to Miss Modeste Potier, of St. Martin parish. To them have been born twelve children: Edward G., attorney, of Lafayette; Felix E., engineer and mechanic, of St. Martin parish; Dan. W., attorney, at St. Martinville; Charles L., engineer and mechanic, of St. Martinville; Robert E., druggist, at Thibodeaux; Albert P., who is at present a student in dentistry; Cecile, Paul E., Walter, Lucie, J. Sasthene and Modeste.
