The records sometimes give his name as Abraham A. (marriage record, deeds issued in 1875 and 1878, census of 1850 and 1860, birth record of fourth child) and sometimes as Abram A. (census of 1870, birth record of first child and last, N. Y. City directories of 1897 to 1918, his obituary). Apparently Abram A. was the preferred form during the latter part of his life. Following the death of his parents when he was five years old, this Abram A. Cortelyou resided with his uncle Garret Cortelyou until he reached his majority. After his marriage, the Bloomingdale Farm at Belle Mead was his home for several years. In 1876 he purchased a coal, lumber and hay business at Neshanic and conducted this success-fully for thirty years. In 1881 he was also postmaster at Neshanic. In 1906 the family removed to Somerville, N. J., where he was active as a member and office-holder in the First Reformed Church. Abram A. Cortelyou became widely known through his ownership of the Bloomingdale herd of Holstein-Friesian cattle. One of the cows in this herd made the highest butter-fat record in the world up to that time. Mr. Cortelyou was active in the affairs of the Holstein-Friesian Association. He became director, vice-president and then president of this organization. In this connection he maintained offices in New York City from 1897 till the time of his death.
