He becam Aide-De-Camp on the staff fo Major General Gilmore in the 10th Army in Jul, 1863 at Hilton Head, Beaufort County, South Carolina. He participated in the capture of Morris Island, South Carolina and in the assaults on Fort Wagner. At one point he was sent with orders across a stretch of heavy fighting but succeeded without injury on horseback. on Jul 10, 1863. He retired from service with the rank of Brevet Lt. Colonel in 1866. He held the position of Adjudent General of the State of New Jersey between Apr, 1867 and 1900. He was commisioned Brevet Major General in 1874. On 1887 Published 300 copies of his book on the Stryker Family.


Civil War Union Army Officer. He was a graduate from Princeton who studied law. He enlisted in Company A, National Guard of Trenton on April 16, 1861. He organized the 14th New Jersey Volunteers and served as aide to General Quincy Gillmore. He was then promoted to Major and Paymaster on February 19, 1863. He was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel on November 24, 1865 and resigned on June 30, 1866. He was placed on the military staff of the governor of New Jersey and became adjutant general of the state. He was admitted to the bar and was the president of the Trenton banking company. He then became a military historian publishing many works on New Jersey and their fighting men. His Roster of New Jersey Volunteers in the Civil War and his Roster of Jerseymen in the Revolutionary War are considered some of his best works.

      Helen Boudinot Atterbury was born on Jan 26, 1848. Helen married General William Scudder Stryker, son of Thomas Johnson Stryker and Hannah Scudder, on Sep 14, 1870.
