Shortly after his marriage he bought of Rem Van Cleef his farm to which he removed and which he farmed the remainder of his life, leaving it to his two sons Richard J. and Rutgert J. Stillwell. A large lawn, extending from the road back some distance to the house, was where a part of the British Army encamped after debarkation and prior to the Battle of Long Island.
