Richard Sullivan was a son of John and Sybal Sullivan and was born May 13, 1792. He was married August 19, 1809, to Nancy Faulkner, at Green, Chenango County, N. Y. Nancy (Faulkner) Sullivan was born October 11, 1790, and died February 14, 1850
.For sixty-nine years, John Schenck has been a worthy and respected citizen of the town of Lysander. Many important trusts were committed to his care, and his integrity remains unquestioned. In every question relating to the public good, he was actively and deeply interested. He was a modest man, and yet was fearless for and in the right. Keen perception, honest judgment, strong convictions, with moral courage, were among his characteristics as a parent, a citizen, and a man. He encouraged and assisted the young, helped the unfortunate, ministered to the poor, and sympathized with the sorrowing.
In 1842 he publicly professed loyalty to God, united with the Christian Church at Plainville, and remained an honored and respected member until called to "join the choir invisible."
Forty years of Christian service revealed the true character of the man. His faithfulness, self-sacrifice, and devotion to religion are well-known. He was a contented burden-bearer, counting it a pleasure to not only live but work for his God and Savior. Here he will be sadly missed, for his seat is empty. In social life, his presence was an inspiration and a welcome addition to every circle of society. His counsel was wise, his influence great, his life, as a whole, exemplary. He was every-body's friend, and was familiarly called "Uncle John" by all. The young were attracted in love and confidence toward him, and the aged-Tespected him, worthily. Truly, our loss is great in his death; but we confidently believe that that which is our affliction, works out for him a far more exceeding weight of glory. The united, sincere sorrow of the Church and society can only be healed by the grace of a kind Providence.
Funeral services were held at his late residence and also at the Church in Plainville, Tuesday. The large gathering of relatives and friends bore witness to the sincere sorrow of all. Rev. W. J. Grimes, of Memphis, a life-long friend of the de-ceased, was present, and in obedience to the personal request of the deceased, conducted the funeral services, assisted by Rev. E. E. Colburn, pastor of the Church. The Good Templars presented a beautiful floral pillow, as a slight mark of appreciation to the memory of one who was a true and interested member of their order.
Thus all that was mortal of our father, brother, friend, was laid in the house appointed for all living, to await God's call to life and love in eternity. The family of the deceased have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.     E. E. C.

The village was founded by Henry W. Austin in 1866. Owing to his liberal donations to the United States Clock Manufacturing Company, that business enterprise was located here, and this in connection with his successful efforts in other directions, and in connection with the railroad company, it was decided to name the village in his honor. He has made and added to the village six subdivisions, embracing two hundred and eighty acres. In his first subdivision, which was recorded May 12, 1866, he was joined by C. C. Merrick. Besides the eighty acres added by Mr. Merrick, C. E. Crafts added thirty-six and one-fourth acres; Henry Waller added forty-three and three-fourths acres, and the estate of John Frink has since added seventy-two and a half acres. The village includes a texxx itory one mile square, bounded on the north by Chicago Avenue, on the east by Robinson Avenue, on the south by Madison Street, and on the west by Austin Avenue.

HENRY W. AUSTIN, one of the first settlers of Oak Park, and the founder of the village of Austin, was born at Skaneateles, Onondaga Co., N.Y., August 1, 1828. His early life and pursuits were those of the farm. His grandfather, having settled in that section of the country when it was an entire wilderness, in 1792, was well identified with its early history. He was a prosperous and highly esteemed citizen, and raised a large family. Henry W. Austin came to the West without capital, representing certain manufactories in staple and special line of hardware, in 1858. His relations to these manufactories lasted twenty-five years, during which time he conducted the business with success. The profits of the business were largely invested in real estate west of and near Chicago, in Kansas and Colorado. He founded the village of Aus tin, which was named for him, 1866. He was interested in establishing other suburban towns, and also largely in the town of Cicero, within the limits of which were located his investments. He was elected to the State Legislature in 1870, and introduced the bill known as the West Side Park Bill, the passage of which was mainly accredited to his efforts. He also prepared and introduced the temperance bill March 31, 1871, which received the Governor's approval January 13, 1872, and became what is known as the Illinois Temperance Law July I, 1872. He established and was part owner of the first hardware store in Kansas City back of the bluffs, when Kansas City was generally known as Westport Landing. He also established a large live stock interest at Colorado Springs, Col. in 1872, which he still retains. He made the first donation to Colorado College at Colorado Springs, and has been one of its trustees from its organization. Mr. Austin was married October 3, 1859, to Martha Sophia Voorhees daughter of James L. Voorhees, near Syracuse, N.Y. They have one son and one daughter, and reside at Oak Park in the house which they commenced to build in October, 1859. Its grounds have long been considered among the most attractive features of the village. He has been identified with all the progress of Oak Park, assisted in the organization of the first church society, and has also contributed liberally to other church enterprises. He has made it what it is to-day, a temperance village, by buying its three well established saloons and closing them up, with a guarantee from the municipal government of the town of Cicero that no new licenses should be granted to the village of Oak Park. In concluding this brief outline of an active life it is necessary only to add that, personally, Mr. Austin is a man of indomitable energy, charitable in the imputation of motives, and has a nice sense of honor in business transactions. His private character is exemplary. and in point of integrity and responsibility the record of none stands higher than his.

Dr. Orlando M. Bryan House
The Dr. Orlando M. Bryan House, stands in the 300 block of Somonauk Street in Sycamore. This Italianate structure was erected around 1866, since that date it has been altered from its original appearance.

Bryan was the "pioneer" physician for the settlement of Sycamore, Illinois, beginning his medical practice in the city that would become the county seat of DeKalb County in 1846.[2] During the Civil War Bryan was charged with running the General Hospital of the Army of the Mississippi.[2] Later he requested and was granted the post of Medical Director and Purveyor of the Department of New Mexico. Bryan returned to Sycamore in 1866.
