Emily Dorcas Iler was born on Nov 23, 1824 at Ohio County, Kentucky. She was born on Nov 23, 1829 at Ohio County, Kentucky. Emily married George Washington Harsin, son of Garret Gilbert Harsin and Mary Lowry, on Mar 23, 1848 at Marion County, Iowa. Emily Dorcas Iler died on Nov 30, 1914 at Knoxville, Marion County, Iowa, at age 85. Emily was buried on Dec 3, 1914 at Eureka Cemetery, Harvey, Marion County, Iowa.
Dorcas Emily Iler was one of ten children born to Jacob and Mary Iler. Her birthplace was Ohio county, Kentucky; the date, Nov. 23, 1829. Her parents came to Iowa in 1844 and located northeast of Pella shortly after that section had been an Indian reservation. Here at Sand Ridge she developed into womanhood. She was married to George W. Harsin, March 23, 1848. Her husband took a claim of government land, improved it, and made a comfortable home for his family where he resided until his death, October 23, 1893. Mrs. Harsin and her daughter Minnie, continued to live at the old homestead until 1900, when they moved to Knoxville. Mrs. Harsin had a very social disposition. She won many long-life friends. She was a great lover of children and they delighted to hear her stories. She was known among the young folks by the endearing name of 'Grandma' and among the older folks as 'Aunt Emily.' Last Friday she was taken very ill and three days of suffering followed, terminating in her peaceful death at the age of 85 years and 7 days. The cause of her death was intestinal toxaemia. Her children and grandchildren had ministered to her comfort and happiness for years. Her daughterMinnie was her constant and devoted companion during all the years of her widowhood. She was deeply concerned for her mother's welfare continually. All of Grandma Harsin's children are living, three sons and two daughters: F.M. Harsin, Rocky Ford, Colo; Mrs. Jennie McTaggart and Miss Minnie Harsin, of Knoxville; J.D. Harsin of Durham; and Garret Harsin, of Nampa, Idaho. Twelve grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren survive her. Two brothers and one sister, Mrs. Spohn, also remain. One brother is 90 and the sister 88 years of age.On Nov.22, Grandma Harsin's 85th birthday was celebrated by the homecoming of her children to her home for dinner. This pleased her and brought her much joy. Being an early pioneer she shared the many privations of the settlers. When the Scholte colony from Holland landed at Pella she was one of the young women who prepared the first dinner for that colony. She was kind and helpful and neighborly. In early days when doctors were few and nurses and hospitals unknown, she was often called to care for the sick and administered home remedies. She was a christian for many years, being member of the Baptist church at first in her home locality and then for a long time a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. She was buried at Eureka cemetery on Thursday, Dec. 3. The funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church by Rev. Robertson. Mrs. Harsin was a member of the Eastern Star, and the lodge attended the services in a body. Card of Appreciation -- We desire to express our appreciationand heartfelt thanks to our neighbors and friends for their kindly assistance and expressions of sympathy during our recent sorrow, also for the beautiful floral offerings. Delilah Ann Harsin died on Nov 14, 1954. Delilah was buried on Nov 16, 1954 at Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado.
She was also known as Lila Ann Harsin. According to the Memoirs of BessieBlain Lonsbury, her mother had two sisters buried in a cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I found Lydia C. Harsin buried in the Evergreen Cemetery. After checking other cemetery records, I also discovered a Lila Ann Richards buried in the same cemetery. She is buried in Lot -061. There is a GeorgeTaylor Richards buried on 24 May 1949, buried in the same lot. It appearsthere is a Lila Richards, wife of George Richards, in the 1920 Census for Enumeration District 19, Precinct 68,El Paso County, Colorado. However, the name is not clear. George Richards is listed as 62 years old and born in Iowa. His wife if 52 and also born in Iowa. Her parents are listed as born in the United States, so this gives no clues. These two records lead me to believe that Lila Harsin was most likely married to George Taylor Richards.
