Samuel DEMENT was a Methodist circuit rider on the Guyandotte Circuit of the Kentucky District. While traveling on his circuit, Samuel disappeared. Two weeks later a man stopped to water his horses, including Samuel's large spotted horse. When asked about Samuel's horse, the man replied that he had found the animal on the trail. Deborah was afraid to ask too many questions for she feared that Samuel had been killed for the money he carried to pay for his lodging.

      In 1884, Lawrence Harsin left his wife and daughter in the care ofhis father, John D. Harsin, in Osborne County, Kansas. He then headed to Kearney, NE where he intended to sell his horse. He was never heard from again. 37 years later a former sheriff called Rober Kirkendall, Lawrence's brother-in-law, to his death bed. He then confessed that in 1884 he and a posse were searching for a group of horse theives. When they caught up to the group they shot and killed them all. Before one of the men died he told the sheriff he was an innocent man. He had only met up with the others the day before and they had agreed to head for Kearney together. Lawrence Harsin had joined up with the wrong men, and he was mistakenly shot for a horse thief.
