John Neilson Carpender, 78, a native of New Brunswick, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, at his home in San Diego.

Born and raised in New Brunswick, he lived in Ridgewood and New York City before moving to San Diego eight years ago. He attended Rutgers Prep and graduated from St. Andrew's School, Middletown, Delaware. He received his bachelor's degree from Brown University under the NROTC program and was commissioned in 1951, serving in the Navy during the Korean War.

Mr. Carpender was an executive in the advertising and marketing fields for almost 35 years. He retired in 1987 as president of Warren Pfaff Advertising Agency, New York City. Previously, he was a vice president at Carl Ally, Inc., New York City. During his tenure at Carl Ally, Inc., he won the Copywriter of the Year Award.

He was a trustee of the San Diego Zoological Society.

He was the son of the late William and Helen (Janeway) Carpender. His grandfather, John Neilson Carpender, lived in a home in New Brunswick known as "Hillcrest" which is now the administration building of Douglas College. His great-grandfather, Jacob Stout Carpender, was a founding member of St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, New Brunswick. His uncle, Admiral Arthur S. Carpender, was commander in chief of the Southwest Pacific Allied Fleet during World War II. His cousin, Francis Stephens Hall, a prominent figure in the famous Hall-Mills murder trial in 1926, lived in a home on Nichol Avenue in New Brunswick which is now the residence of the dean of Douglas College.

Surviving are his wife, Jane (Ferris) Carpender; two daughters, Kimberly Anne Carpender of San Diego, and Dana Whiting Carpender of Bloomington, Ind; a son, John Neilson Carpender of Mundelein, Ill; a sister, Catherine Carpender Amos of Lydonville, Vt; two grandchildren, Henry Alden Carpender and Kathryn Halliday Carpender, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, 189 George St., New Brunswick. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, North Brunswick. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Heifer International Fund, 1 World Drive, Little Rock, AR 72202. Arrangements are under the direction of Quackenboss Funeral Home, New Brunswick.

Catherine was buried at Oakdale Cemetery, Wilmington, New Hanover County, North Carolina.
