MOUNT PULASKI - Edna Scroggin Buckles, 88, of Mount Pulaski, died at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 1987, at Decatur Memorial Hospital.
She was a retired manager of the Mount Pulaski and Illiopolis theaters. She was affiliated with the Mount Pulaski Christian Church, the Loyal Daughters of the Christian Church, and was a past member of the Mount Pulaski Women's Club.
Mrs. Buckles was born Aug. 11, 1898 in Jackson, Minn., a daughter of Oran and Lillian Steenbergen Scroggin. She married Russell Buckles March 2, 1919 in Mount Pulaski. He preceded her in death March 31, 1966.
Surviving are two daughters, Vivian Schroth, Mount Pulaski, and Mary Alice Dittus, Indianapolis, Ind; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, a brother, and a sister.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at the Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home, Mount Pulaski, with Don Hatfield officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pulaski Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Mount Pulaski Christian Church.

ORAN O. SCROGGIN, 93, DIED MONDAY, SERVICES YESTERDAY
Oran Oliver Scroggin, oldest male resident of Mount Pulaski, who liv West Jefferson St., died at 12:40 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 1962, in St. John's Hospital at Springfield, Ill. He had been hospitalized for eight days. Mr. Scroggin was aged 93 years, 10 months, and 10 days. He was in the hospital earlier this summer and underwent surgery. Decedent was born Oct. 17, 1868 at Mahomet, near Champaign, Ill., a son of Alfred C. Scroggin and Mary Phillipe Scroggin. He came to Logan County with his parents in boyhood, living on the Scroggin farm close to the Steenbergen Cemetery four miles southwest of Mt. Pulaski. In Williamsville, Ill., on Jan. 28, 1892, he married Lillie Steenbergen. For 14 years they resided on farms in Oklahoma, Iowa, and Minnesota, and then they moved back to the old homestead. In 1922 Mr. and Mrs. Scroggin retired from the farm and moved to the residence on West Jefferson Street. During the years Mr. Scroggin looked after his land interests and for some time was associated with his son-in-law, Russell Buckles, in the operation of the Mount Pulaski theater.
Decedent was a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard K. Scroggin, pioneers, who had come to this area of Illinois a number of years before the town of Mt. Pulaski was founded in 1836. They settled on what is now called the lake ditch area which was then also occupied by Indians. The pioneer Scroggin family is of Welsh and was founded in America in colonial days.
Mr. Scroggin had been a member of the Christian Church for a great many years and also belonged to the Modern Woodmen of America. His wife preceded him in death Jan. 19, 1958. He is survived by one so Wesley of Mount Pulaski, and two daughters, Mrs. Jennie Smallwood of Decatur, and Mrs. Edna Buckles (wife of Russell Buckles) of Mount Pulaski. There are six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The remains were removed to the Schahl Funeral Home in Mt. Pulaski, where funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 29, at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Paul Burdick, pastor of the Mt. Pulaski Christian Church. Appropriate hymns were played on the organ by Mrs. Burdick. Burial was in the Mt. Pulaski cemetery. Pallbearers were Everett Rothwell, Wilford Scroggin Jr., Earl Holmes, Austin Shaffenacker, George A. Volle, and John Whittle, the latter from Decatur.

MRS. ORAN SCROGGIN DIED SUNDAY AT LINCOLN HOSPITAL
Mrs. Lillie Scroggin, wife of Oran O. Scroggin, West Jefferson Street, died at 9:35 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 1958, in the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, where she had been a patient for 15 days. She was aged 88 years, 3 months, and 8 days. Her health began failing several years ago.
Lillie Steenbergen was born on Oct. 11, 1869 in a log cabin on a farm four miles southwest of Mount Pulaski, the land adjoining Steenbergen Cemetery. Her parents, William W. and Jane Bates Steenbergen, came from Ohio in 1845 and, as pioneer settlers, located on a farm southwest of Mount Pulaski. The old log cabin stood for a long time as a reminder of the early days of this community. Steenbergen Cemetery was named for her father. When Lillie Steenbergen was 12 years old, her father and mother died, and she went to Williamsville to live with relatives. In Williamsville, Ill., on Jan. 28, 1892, she married Oran O. Scroggin, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfr Scroggin, who lived south of Steenbergen Cemetery. The couple, during the first 14 years of their wedded life, resided on farms in Minnesota, Iowa, and Oklahoma, and then returned to Logan County to occupy the old farm of her parents. They remained on this farm until 1922, when they retired and moved to the present family home in Mt. Pulaski.
Mrs. Scroggin had been a member of the Mount Pulaski Christian Church for a long period of time, also the Ladies' Aid Society of the church, t Never-Grow-Old Society, Rebekahs, and the Household Science Club. She took an active part in these organizations as long as her health would permit. Decedent is survived by her husband; one son, Wesley A., Mount Pulaski; two daughters, Mrs. Jennie Smallwood, Decatur, and Mrs. Russell Buckles, Mount Pulaski; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The remains were removed to the Schahl Funeral Home in Mt. Pulaski, where funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, conducted by the Rev. Paul Burdick. Appropriate organ music was rendered by Mrs. Frank Turley. Burial was made in Mt. Pulaski cemetery. The pallbearers were Frank E. Turley, Wilford K. Scroggin Sr., Orville Heft, J. B. Heft, Everett Rothwell, and Milton Mellinger.

Harry Buckles Died In Iowa Last Sunday
John Harrison Buckles of Mount Pulaski, known to his large number of friends as Harry Buckles, died at 1:55 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 1939 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harry Ulrich, in Fairfax, Iowa, where he had been sick for the past five months. Mr. Buckles' health had been failing for more than one year.
His family was at his bedside when the final summons came. He was aged 69 years, 7 months, and 12 days.
Decedent was born about four miles west of Mount Pulaski, Logan County, Illinois, July 24, 1869, being one of the ten children of Elias and Elizabeth Dyer Buckles. He grew to manhood on the home farm and, in Lincoln on Feb. 22, 1891, married Miss Ida Row of Mount Pulaski. They engaged in farming for a number of years in this community and then moved to Oklahoma. After a few years there they returned to this city and Mr. Buckles devoted some time to the buying of livestock, and he also conducted a meat market on the west side of the square. The family then moved to Waterloo, Iowa, but again came back to this city, residing in an apartment in the Buckles building on the west side of the square above the Gamble store. Mr. Buckles was a member of the Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ida Buckles of Mount Pulaski; one son, Elias Buckles of Waterloo, Iowa; one daughter, Gladys, wife of Harry Ulrich of Fairfax, Iowa; three grandsons; two sisters and three brothers, Mrs. T. L. Rothwell, Mrs. George Litterly Sr., Frank and Cecil Buckles of Mount Pulaski, and Hubert Buckles of Havana, Illinois.
The body arrived in Mount Pulaski Monday afternoon and was taken to the Schahl Funeral Home, remaining there until the hour of the funeral. Funeral services were held at the Christian church at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. Wayne Staley. Appropriate Hymns, "No Night There" and "The Sweet By and By", were sung by Paul R. Moore, with Mrs. Frank E. Turley as organ accompanist. The services were largely attended. The interment was in the Mount Pulaski cemetery. The pallbearers were George Suedmeier, Walter D. Wacaser, Arthur C. Schilling, Frank Moore, Hubert Zimmerli, and William Brannon. The honorary pallbearers, all nephews, were Everett, Clarence, and Robert Rothwell; Paul, John, and Ralph Buckles; and Claude Litterly. The flowers were in charge of Miss Betty Ann Mayer, Miss Georgiabelle Rothwell, Mrs. Harry Damarin, Miss Emagene Buckles, Mrs. Thomas A. Gupton Sr., and Mrs. Fred Hild, the latter of Stanford, nieces of the decedent.

CEDAR FALLS- Eugene Elias Buckles, 85, of Cedar Falls, formally of Waterloo, died Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Windhaven after a lengthy illness.
He was born May 11, 1922 in Waterloo, son of Elias and Blanche Brothers Buckles. Mr. Buckles graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1940 and attended Iowa State Teachers College for one year.
Gene met Betty Jane Fox in Deer River Minnesota where he was a fishing guide. They married on December 12, 1941 in Jesup, Iowa.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Coast Guard stationed in Florida, from 1942-1945.
Gene owned and operated a franchise of Bowes Seal Fast wholesale supply business, which he started in 1940 and operated until his retirement in 1987. It was, at one time, the largest Bowes distributorship in the United States.
He was a lifetime member of the Waterloo American Legion Post #138, El Kahir Shrine Club, and 32nd Degree Mason. He served 15 years on the Black Hawk County Conservation Board 1974-1988 and in 1975 was instrumental in the purchase of land which is now Hartman Reserve. In 1999, Gene and Betty matched funds for the construction of the nature center at Hartman Reserve which bears their name. He was a State Chair and National Trustee of Ducks Unlimited, and a Life Member of Goodwill.
Gene was passionate about nature and the outdoors. His love of hunting and fishing took him to Alaska, Ethiopia, Canada, and Belize. Some of his trophies collected from those excursions represent World Records. Many of his trophies were donated for exhibits in the area. His Alaskan mounts are displayed at the UNI museum. North American mounts were donated to the Gene and Betty Buckles Program Center at Hartman Reserve.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; two daughters, Becky (Darrell) Willhite of Cedar Falls and Bonnie Dunham of Waterloo; grandchildren Lora (Doug) Dillon of Kohler, WI, Sara (Steve) Willette of Cedar Rapids, Darby (Jeff) Kurtz of Waterloo and Dirk (Denise) Dunham of Phoenix, AZ. He leaves five "Great Grandjoys:" Jack, Sophie, and Nate Willette, Ethan Dillon, Sadie Kurtz and long time friend, Wil Alamilla of San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, Belize.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert D. Buckles, M.D. of Waterloo.
Memorial Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church on Kimball with military rites following the service conducted by the Becker-Chapman American Legion Post #138 and the V.F.W. Post 1623. Family will receive friends Monday, March 3 from 4-7 p.m. at the Kearns, Huisman – Schumacher Chapel on Kimball. Inurnment will be in Garden of Memories at a later date.
Memorials may be directed to Hartman Reserve Nature Center.

ATLANTA - Erika E. Ulrich, 74, Atlanta, passed away at 10:21 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 13, 2009) at St. Clara's Manor Nursing Home.
A memorial service for Mrs. Ulrich will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Quiram Peasley Funeral Home, Atlanta, with the Rev. Jeffrey G. Laible officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Atlanta Cemetery.
Erika Edith Ulrich was born July 28, 1935, in Germany, the daughter of Johann and Erne Stranat Jokschus. She married Donald E. Ulrich on March 21, 1980, in Peoria. He preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 2000.
Surviving Mrs. Ulrich are her daughters, Peggy Flynn, Healdsburg, Calif., and Renate Klasen, Atlanta; one sister, Renate Winkelmann, Germany; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Mrs. Ulrich was preceded in death by one son, her husband and her parents.
Memorials may be made to the Community Cancer Center in Normal.
