Services For M. Gasaway Wednesday

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, November 22, at the Christian Church at two o'clock for Mrs. Murtie Gasaway, who passed away at her home in Glendale, Cal., Thursday, November 16.
Mrs. Gasaway had been in very poor health the past eighteen months and her advanced age prevented her from regaining strength to recover. Her brother, J. M. Rothwell, and his wife went to California a short time ago to visit with her. Mrs. Murtie Rothwell Gasaway was the daughter of J. M. and Angeline Rothwell, and was born January 12, 1866 near here. She was united in marriage to Nelson Gasaway on November 8, 1883, and he preceded her in death about 15 years.

To this union was born one daughter, Vida May, who became the wife of Leo May, and she also preceded her mother in death, passing away in 1923.
She is survived by two brothers, J. M. and T. L. Rothwell of this place, and her son-in-law, Leo May, who accompanied her remains here, and two grandsons, Harold and Joseph May, of Glendale, Cal.

Practically her entire life was spent in and near Mt. Pulaski, taking up her residence in California about 12 years ago after she had gone there with her mother for her health. She returned here after her mother's death, but soon went back to California to make her home. She was a member of the Mt. Pulaski Christian Church for many years. Services at the church were in charge of Rev. J. Wayne Staley. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. H. C. Gruber, Miss Della Washburn, Frank Turley, and B. A. Tyler, with Mrs. Frank Turley at the organ. Pallbearers were Clarence, Everett, Harry, Robert, and Keith Rothwell, and Wilford Scroggin. Burial was in Mt. Pulaski cemetery.

Among those attending the services from a distance were: Grace Rothwell, Champaign; Frank Scroggin, Dawson; Mrs. Rena Drobisch, Chicago; Adam May, Mr. and Mrs. Harry May and Mrs. Margaret Bowles, all of Taylorville; Mr. and Mrs. Tony May, Morrisonville; Mrs. Catherine Sams, Decatur. Friends from various towns in central Illinois were also present.

JOHN C. ENGLAND DIES IN TEXAS

MOUNT PULASKI, Mar. 31 - John C. England died Saturday morning, March 29, in a hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, according to a message received by relatives on Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. England went south last fall to pass the winter and news of his short illness and sudden death was a shock to his friends. His wife and two sons were at his bedside when death came which was caused by a paralytic stroke. Mr. England was widely known and a life-long resident of Mount Pulaski Township. He was raised on a farm and followed that occupation until about 20 years ago when he moved to this city. He was an ardent sportsman, his favorite diversions being hunting and fishing. He was a noted and expert trap shot and was a familiar figure at most tournaments held in this country some 20 years ago. He was active also in the civic and business life of the community, being one of the incorporators of the Mt. Pulaski farmers' Grain and Elevator Co. in 1903, being a member of the board of directors almost continuously until the present time. He was also one of the incorporators of the Mt. Pulaski Independent Telephone Co., which was later absorbed by the present company. He was active in many other enterprises and served the township on the board of Logan County supervisors from 1902 to 1904, being a member of the courthouse building committee which had charge of bids and plans of the present courthouse. He was a charter member of Lincoln Lodge of Elks No. 914.

John C. "Deacon" England was born in the southern part of the township and would have reached the age of 73 years on April 3, 1930. He was a son of Elder John England, a pioneer preacher of this section, who organized the Copeland Christian Church in 1866 and dedicated the church the following year. Decedent was twice married, his first marriage to Miss Mary Francis Buckles, daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Buckles, occurred about 48 years ago. She died in 1897. They were the parents of two daughters and one son, one daughter dying in infancy and one son, Forest, dying a few years ago. The other daughter is the daughter of Hubert Zimmerli of Mt. Pulaski. His second marriage, to Mrs. Tillie Horn Weller, occurred about 29 years ago. Two sons were born to this union, Harold and John, both in Chicago. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, two sons, and five grandchildren.

The body is expected to arrive in Mt. Pulaski some time on Tuesday, when funeral arrangements will be completed.

Mrs. Mary Davis Died Here Monday

The funeral of Mrs. Elizabeth Davis, who died Monday evening, April 2 at 8 o'clock, was held this afternoon at the Christian Church with Rev. J. Wayne Staley in charge. Mrs. Davis, who had been in ill health the past year and bedfast for several months, died at the home of her father, Charles Buckles.
The decedent was born May 1, 1882, in Lake Fork, and died at the age of 51 years, 11 months, and one day. She was married in Cornland to B. W. Davis April 13, 1902. Surviving are her husband and the following children: Paul Davis, Mt. Pulaski; Miss Daisy Davis, Springfield; Mrs. Theatrice Howe and Mrs. Georgia Haferkamp, Hartsburg; and Miss Tillie Davis, Manteno. Surviving also are her father, one sister, Miss Ora Buckles, of this city, and one brother, Omar Buckles. Pallbearers were B. R. Aitchison, Ennis Downing, George Millard, Wilford Ryan, George Litterly Sr., and Eldon Barton.
Burial was made in Steenbergen Cemetery southwest of the city.

Obituary: Georgia L. Haferkamp LINCOLN -- Georgia Louise Haferkamp, 88, of Lincoln died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in Lincoln. She was born June 6, 1910, the daughter of Bert and Mary Elizabeth Buckles Davis. She married Harry Haferkamp in 1934 in Hartsburg; he died in 1947. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Jean Copeland. Mrs. Haferkamp worked at Lincoln Developmental Center for many years, retiring in 1974. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln. Survivors: two sons, Harry Bill Hafercamp of Lincoln and Clayton Hafercamp of West Palm Beach, Fla; a daughter, Sandra Crane of Hartsburg; 10 grandchildren; and a sister, Lee Schaubelle of
Manteno.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lincoln, the Rev. Clarence Gall officiating. Burial: Hartsburg Union Cemetery, Hartsburg.

MISS ORA BUCKLES, 72, DIED MONDAY AT LINCOLN HOSPITAL

Miss Ora Buckles, who lived on North Garden St., Mount Pulaski for more than 45 years, died at 5:35 a.m. Monday, July 22, 1957, in the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, Lincoln, Ill., where she had been taken in the Schahl ambulance at 10:30 p.m. Saturday. Her health had been failing for several months. She was aged 72 years, 4 months, and 15 days. Ora Buckles was born March 7, 1885, in Lake Fork, Ill., a daughter of Charles and Evelyn Coats Buckles. In her girlhood, she came to Mount Pulaski to make her home. She was a member of the Christian Church. Miss Buckles is survived by the following nieces and nephews: Mrs. Daisy Karrick, Springfield; Mrs. Georgia Haferkamp, Hartsburg; Tillie Davis, Manteno; and Paul Davis, Mount Pulaski. The remains were removed to the Schahl Funeral Home in Mt. Pulaski, where funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, conducted by Rev. Boyce Mouton, pastor of the Copeland Christian Church, southwest of Mount Pulaski. Interment was made in the Steenbergen Cemetery. Pallbearers were Walter Sullivan, Walter Dannenberger, Clyde Febus, Vernon Voelker, Frederick Zimmermann, and Thomas A. Gupton Sr.

He was a large land-owner and farmer of Logan County, living on section 16, township 17, range 2. He first married Mary Vandeventer, who died August 20, 1876. To them were born five children - Melinda (deceased), David, James, John and Rebecca. His present wife was Mrs. Elizabeth J. Montgomery, daughter of Green Herring, of Knoxville Tennessee, and widow of John Montgomery. David and James Birks (twins) were born in Mt. Pulaski Township, March 18, 1839. The latter (James) is a farmer of Dakota. John Birks was born April, 1841, and is now a farmer of Macon county, Illinois. David Birks (farmer section 8, township 17, range 2, is a native of Logan County, a representative of one of its oldest families. - [This is the lead in sentence from the above referenced text.] David Birks has been a life long resident of Logan County, and is now one of the most extensive farmers of this township, controlling about 1,100 acres. He has lived since 1853 on Bold Knob, a high hill commanding a beautiful landscape view. The first improvements were made and the present buildings were erected by his father (Rolland). Mr. Birks married Sarah Copeland, who was born on her father's homestead (where he still lives), on Lake Fork, February 7, 1842. Mr. and Mrs. Birks have one son - William Edward, born January 30, 1861. They are members of the Christian church. In politics Mr. Birks is a Democrat."
