OLD TIMER HENRY BUCKLES
Henry Edward Buckles is now on his thirtieth year of employment with The Union Pacific Coal Company at Reliance. He is known to most of us as "Buck", "Harry", or "Sheriff."
"Buck" is an old-time baseball player, and said he thought it was time to quit when his first grandchild was born in 1927.

His first employment with the Union Pacific was in 1920 when he started as steam fitter foreman remodeling the roundhouse at Rock Springs.

Early the following year, Tom Bainbridge, then construction supervisor for the Railroad between Ogden and Rawlins asked "Buck" to become a permanent member of his force head quartered at Green River as a maintenance mechanic. Soon after, the railroad business hit a slump, and Harry decided that he had better tie up with something having more employment stability and accepted Tom Foster's invitation to work at the Reliance coal mine of The Union Pacific Coal Company. Buckles' first job was as pipe man under Matt Marshall, mine foreman at old No. 1 in Reliance. Tom Foster is now retired and lives in Rock Springs, and Matt Marshall resides in Salt Lake City, Utah.

At this time, a steady year-round job was an innovation for Buckles since he had played both semi-pro and professional baseball in the Western Association, Western League and independent leagues since 1905. He switched back and forth from manager to catcher, dependent upon the expedience and which paid the most.
In 1905 he played pro ball under the Western Association banner for the Springfield, Missouri club, in 1906 under the Western League banner for the Pueblo, Colorado club, which incidentally was managed by Sallee, the former manager of Chicago and the National League Club at Boston. Until 1909 "Buck" caught for the independent club of Cripple Creek and Telluride, Colorado, then going to Pittsburgh, Kansas and Joplin, Missouri as manager under the Western League Association. The Joplin club was sold to Muskogee, Oklahoma, which he managed until 1911. "Buck" said he didn't like the new arrangement and jumped his contract to manage independent teams in Flagstaff, Arizona and Las Vegas, New Mexico, until 1915. "Buck" said he missed his big chance in 1909 when an injured arm prohibited him from fulfilling an option with the St. Louis Americans.

After 1915 he gave up baseball as a full-time vocation and learned the steam-fitting trade while employed at the Utah Copper (Arthur Plant) at Salt Lake City, Utah, where he remained until 1919 with brief employment at the A. S. and R. smelter at Salt Lake City.

He continued with summer baseball after 1915, however, playing at Salt Lake City, Rock Springs, and Reliance until 1927. When asked why and how he happened to come to Rock Springs, he smiled and said he came to play baseball for the old Rock Springs Lumber Company and incidentally managed the Rock Springs Plumbing Company (a subsidiary) for Henry Utzinger, then manager of the Lumber Company.

"Buck" said there are still quite a few old-time ball players around Rock Springs and nearby with whom he played. Some of them are: Mike Maher, present Sweetwater County Sheriff, Henry Carr, retired miner, Rock Springs, "Doc" Gaston, working with the Union Pacific at Green River. Andrew (Ding) Spence, Mine Foreman, Winton, Wyoming. Claude Hiner and Dick Haag, Superior, Wyoming. D.O. Clark, Tom Lavery, Deputy Sheriff, Superior, Wyoming, Howard McComas, retired Old Timer, Salt Lake City, Utah, Bob Reay, presently employed as a mine inspector by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Denver, Colorado. Bill Treseder, Deputy U.S. Marshal, Salt Lake City, and Emil Droege and "Boots" Dankowski of Green River, Wyoming.

"Buck" was born on a farm near Sedan, Kansas, June 5, 1884, moving to Colorado Springs at 6 years of age, where his father engaged as a contractor and prospector in the mining game. He attended both grade and high school in Colorado Springs, Colorado, marrying Sarah Ellen McConaghy, September 6, 1906.

Mrs Buckles' father was manager and owner of an investment company in Colorado Springs for many years and traveled extensively as a mining engineer.

Mr. and Mrs. Buckles have five children: Ione, now Mrs. Rene Jacobs, Kremmling, Colorado, Harry, formerly with Patton's Third Army in Europe and now in service overseas in the Pacific, Rachel, Mrs. Carl Jorgensen, Pinedale, Norma, Mrs. Bob Gamble, Burntfork, and John Warren, in the hotel business in La Jolla, California. There are seven grandchildren.

"Buck" said he has the best wife in the world, saying she has never complained in all of the ups and downs of their life together.

Henry Edward Buckles is a SAFE workman, having never suffered a lost-time accident.

Henry Edward Buckles was my father so I have a more complete history of him. He was born June 5, 1884 in Sedan, Kansas. When he was a boy of 6 his parents moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he attended grade school and high school. As a young man he played professional baseball in Colorado Springs, and Pueblo. Later he was manager of the baseball team in Joplin, Missouri. In 1905 he played pro ball under the Western Association Banner, for the Springfield Missouri Club. He missed his big chance in 1909 when an injured arm prevented him from fulfilling an option with the St. Louis Americans. He gave up baseball as a career in 1915 and learned the steam fitting trade while employed at Utah Copper. He moved to Rock Springs, Wyoming in 1919. In 1920 he moved to Green River, Wyoming where he was a steam fitter for the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1921 he moved to Reliance, Wyoming, where he was employed as a plumber for the Union Pacific. He remained in Reliance for the rest of his life. He was deputy sheriff for nearly 30 years and was special agent for the Union Pacific during the war years guarding the Union Pacific payroll and other duties that went with being a special agent. He was secretary-treasurer of the United Mine Workers Local 905 for 25 years. He retired in 1952. He wintered several winters in California but didn't like the hustle and bustle of the city. He preferred Reliance where he said, "even the dogs know me." He knew everyone and everyone knew him. He never met a stranger. Just before his death he said, "I don't have many riches to my name but I do have many friends , and that is far more important to me." He died October 17, 1954 at his home in Reliance, Wyoming, of a sudden heart attack.

History of Ione Belle Buckles Jacobs
Written by Ione Belle Buckles Jacobs
This was in the Middle Park Times, August 20, 1981.

Ione Jacobs regularly attended the Senior Citizen's meeting and nutrition dinners up to about a year ago. She has been unable to attend recently, but is kindly remember by all. Mrs Jacobs presented the group with the following sketch of her life history, which was read at the Senior Citizen Nutrition Center dinner on August 11, 1981.
Ione wrote extensively for the Middle Park Times ( Colorado) for many years and her many friends want to extend a wish for many happy returns on her birthday.
I was born in Colorado Springs at the Deaconess Hospital ( no longer in existence) on August 3, 1908. My father was Henry Edward Buckles. He was born in Sedan, Kansas and came to Colorado with his father at the age of 15 to prospect for gold.
My Mother was Sarah Ellen McConaghy, whose father was general superintendent for Woods Investment Company, who owned the Cripple Creek and Victor mining fields. She was born in Robinson, Colorado, which is now completely covered by the tailings of the Climax Mine.
My father then became a professional baseball player. In those days, salaries were seldom paid except by the larger cities. He played for Muskogee, Oklahoma and Tulsa, Oklahoma. In those days, baseball strikes were unheard of and Mother told of watching Dad have a whole month's salary fined away because he argued with the decisions of umpires. Dad knew his baseball rules and was usually right but this didn't stop the umpire from fining a player who dared to argue with him.
Dan and Mother moved back to the western states and Dad began to do assessment work by contract for absentee owners. Mother became ill and the doctor advised Dad to take her with him on his next trip. Dad bought a covered wagon and a team which consisted of a big black mule named Jumber and a horse called Dexter. The horse had gotten into loco weed and was completely unpredictable, but it was the only team which Dad could find.
We were gone for many months and had many weird and exciting adventures. The trip took us from Silver City, New Mexico, to Prescott, Arizona and back, and while the details are engraved on my memory, this article is too short to relate them all.
We lived in many places during the ensuing years and I attended many schools. We finally settled down in Reliance, Wyoming. I was the oldest of five children and had to help with the younger children since my mother was never strong.
I married Rene L. Jacobs on May 5, 1927, in Manila, Utah and after a brief honeymoon in Cora, Wyoming, we went to Laramie, Wyoming where my husband filed on a homestead of 640 acres, a grazing section. It was quite a job to fence this and we lived on the place until we proved up on it, which took three years. We had three children, two boys and a girl. All of these children were born at home and in Laramie. We sold the homestead and moved to Boulder, Wyoming where we leased a ranch and spent the next several years there.
We moved to Colorado in 1947 and to Kremmling in 1948. Donald and Jean both graduated from Kremmling Union High School before it became West Grand High School. My husband was a meat cutter for Brown's until we moved to Buena Vista where we spent the winter and then moved back to Kremmling where he cut meat for Dave Sailor.
I was a telephone operator and bookkeeper for an independent telephone company in Pinedale, Wyoming, during World War II. I worked as a secretary for a lawyer in Pinedale and when we came to Kremmling, I worked as a telephone operator, then in The ASC office and later became a secretary for the Grand County Extension Service, a position I held for 14 years. Then, I resigned and went to work for the Middle Park Times as a staff writer and Photographer. I resigned in 1973 to be with my five grandchildren, daughter and sons of my daughter Jean, whom we had lost in a car accident in 1966. My husband passed on in 1968 and my mother in 1969.
I wrote a column for the Middle Park Times for 17 years, had written for the Rocket and Miner, in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and the Pinedale Roundup, in Pinedale, Wyoming.
I love Kremmling and the many friends I have throughout both Grand and Summit Counties.
I have been active in Eastern Star, V.F.W. Auxiliary and am now a member of the Kremmling Senior Citizens.
I love to play bridge and spend time writing poetry and articles and a few stories. I plan to stay in Kremmling for the rest of my life.

Obituary of Carl Thomas Lauritsen Jorgensen
February 21, 1988
CARL JORGENSEN, 85 DIES,

Services for Carl Thomas Lauritsen Jorgensen, 85 of Pinedale, are scheduled for Friday, February 26, 1988 at 2 P.M. in the Community Hall in Pinedale, Wyoming, with Pinedale Franklin No. 31 A.F. & A.M. officiating.

Mr. Jorgensen died February 20, 1988, at the Retirement Center in Pinedale, Wyoming. He was born October 12, 1902 on the Jorgensen home place in Pinedale to Nel and Karen Lauritsen Jorgensen, immigrants from Denmark. They were married in Green River, Wyoming, in 1894.

Carl was married to Rachel McConaghy Buckles on July 2, 1930 in Green River, Wyoming. His wife of 51 years preceded him in death in January of 1982.

Carl was first president of the Green River Valley Cattlemen's Association, past president of Wyoming Stockgrowers Association and a member of the American National Cattlemen's Association. He was voted Livestock Man of the Year by International Livestock Exposition (NILE) in Billings, Montana. He was first president of the Wyoming Beef Council. Carl served eight years on the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission as both president and vice president.

Carl was a life member of Franklin Lodge A.F. & A.M. and past master; past High Priest of Pinedale Chapter No 21 Royal Arch Masons; a member of Commandery, Consistory and Shrine; past associate guardian of Job's Daughters.

Carl was employed in ranching all of his life near Pinedale and Big Piney, Wyoming. He also leased property and pastured cattle in several other parts of Wyoming, (Riverton, and Thermopolis, Wyoming). He received his diploma from Pinedale schools in 1918 and later attended the University of Wyoming.

Survivors are three children, Carl Ray (Bud) Jorgensen, Margie Thomas of Big Piney, Wyoming, and Nancy Carter, of Riverton, Utah; 12 grandchildren, Julie Lee, Nels, Carl and Scott Jorgensen, Carol Jones, Joslyn White, Kevin and Brett Thomas, Lisa Copeland, Kenny and Shayne Carter; three step-grandchildren, Dave Carter, Goldie Childs, and Rockie Ivie; Two great-grandchildren Ryan and Erin Lee; two sisters Mrs Carrie Murdock of Pinedale, and Mrs Laurita Baldwin, of Laramie.

He was preceded on death by his wife, grandson Danny Carter; parents, three brothers, George, James, and Hans; and a baby sister.

Burial will be in the Pinedale, Wyoming cemetery.

Carl Thomas Lauritsen Jorgensen was born October 12, 1902 on his fathers ranch, on Willow Creek, west of Pinedale, Wyoming. He was the forth child born to Nels and Karen Lauritsen Jorgensen. Carl had three brothers and three sisters, George, James, Hans,(Hanna or Karin), Carrie, and Laurita. A sister (Hanna or Karin) and a brother Hans died soon after birth.
Carl attended school in Pinedale, Wyoming, receiving his diploma in 1918. He then attended the University of Wyoming.

Carl married Rachel McConaghy Buckles, on July 2, 1930, in Green River, Wyoming. Carl with a twinkle in his eye used to say, "We had our honeymoon on the 3rd, celebrated the 4th with firecrackers, and there's been fireworks around here ever since." In the early 1930's Carl, like his father before him, tried his hand at dairy farming: "I bought some Guernsey milk cows with a view to marketing cream. But the price paid for butter-fat went way down. It got so low we churned the cream ourselves and used the butter to grease the farm machinery and the wheels of the wagons. Butter was cheaper than axle grease." Carl disgusted with this state of affairs traded his Guernsey cows for some Hereford range cattle. In 1931, using this cattle as collateral, he borrowed money to buy what was known as the "Alv Thompson place" on Boulder Creek. Meanwhile, in 1941 he bought a place on the New Fork River, west of Pinedale. Carl moved his family to the place on the New Fork River in 1943.. He sold the Thompson place in 1944.
The Jorgensens like practically every other ranch family in Wyoming, had exceedingly rough going during the drought and the depression years of the 1930's. In the summer of 1934, the entire state of Wyoming was designated a "drought area." Carl Jorgensen received an appointment to assist in the selection, purchase, and disposition of "drought cattle" in Sublette County. He engaged in this work from July, 1934 to January, 1935, at the same time living on and working his Boulder Creek Ranch. There wasn't much ranching to do that year. Many Sublette County ranchmen didn't even pull their haying machinery out of the shed. There wasn't any hay to harvest. The meadows dried up and turned red.

Carl Jorgensen observed that trailing cattle from the Pinedale country to the railhead at Opal and Rock Springs persisted well into the 1930's when "trucking began to take over." He has personal memories of the cattlemen-sheepmen trouble in west central Wyoming: "I recall my mother baking bread and cooking big roasts of meat all one day when I was five or six years old. Along toward evening thirty men rode up to our cabin, Mother fed them. These men wanted my father to ride with them. He said, 'I will go with you under one condition: that there isn't any violence ""The men, including my father, rode into the night. The following day they and other cattlemen turned back two hundred sheep wagons that were coming into the New Fork and the East Fork country. The cattlemen established a deadline from the mouth of the Fontenelle to the Buckskin Crossing of the Big Sandy. They plowed a furrow the entire distance, and further marked the deadline by erecting stone monuments ten or fifteen feet high on knolls along the route."

Carl Jorgensen is a past president of the Green River Valley Cattlemen's Association. He is a permittee on the National Forest Reserve and he is dead set against the proposal to fence forest grazing land into pastures and to rotate those "pastures". "It would tend to bunch the cattle to much. If the ground happened to be wet where they bunched, this very well could result in foot-rot. The cattle would be much better off dispersed over the allotment for the full grazing season-and so would the grazing ground. As far as the forest land is concerned, this 'rotation theory' is just that-the brain child of theorists that won't work out in practice."

Carl's cattle operation, involving some 800 head of commercial cattle, was pretty much of a family affair. The cattle run on the Forest during the grazing season. With the help of family, Carl annually puts up about 1,100 tons of hay. "I used to put up around 2,000 tons and in haying season, hired twenty men and used eighty head of horses. But after the migratory labor dried up, we just baled our hay merely put it into windrows and baled from the windrows."

Carl Jorgensen's first assignment with the Wyoming Stock Growers Association was on the Game and Wildlife Committee. When the Wyoming Beef Council was formed in 1957, he served as its first chairman. He was chairman of the Resolutions Committee in 1959, and again in 1966. In 1961 he represented Wyoming cattlemen in testifying against Senate Bill No 174--the so called "Wilderness Bill.' Carl Jorgensen reports that his greatest concern during the two years he was Association President, the thing that caused him the most trouble, was the duplicity of U. S. Department of the Interior and the U. S. Forest Service officials who fail to live up to the agreements they made. "The employees of the federal agencies have no financial stake in what happens. Many of them are disinterested, just working to draw their pay, many of them have no conception of what running livestock entails on the part of stockmen."

In 1944 Carl Jorgensen ran for the Wyoming House of Representatives from Sublette County on the Democratic ticket. His Republican opponent was Norman Barlow, who beat him by only one vote. As a result of his political activity, Wyoming Govenor Lester C. Hunt, on February 17, 1945 appointed Carl to the Wyoming State Game and Fish Commission. He was subsequently was re-appointed for a second four year term.

Carl was a controversial figure on the Fish and Game Commission. It seems that the Pinedale Lion's Club undertook to further a program to acquisition by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department with a view to making Sublette County more attractive to Tourists. "I was against this in principle, against more private property passing into the hands of government agencies," Carl reports. When he, as a member of the Game and Fish Commission, publicly expressed his opposition to the proposal, the Pinedale Lions Club circulated a petition aimed at getting him fired from the Commission, and presented it to Governor Hunt. But Governor Hunt stood by his appointee.

Carl represented Sublette County and Teton County on the Game Commission. Both are big game counties. Those fellows in Teton County thought he was doing a good job. They are the ones who got him reappointed to the Game and Fish Commission for a second term. Carl served as President for the last two years he was on it. The people of Teton County were not the only Wyomingites impressed by Carl Jorgensen's candor. The stand he took against further acquisition of private land by governmental agencies, brought him to the favorable attention of livestock men throughout the State.
In February, 1968 , Carl Jorgensen as President of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, met with the other officers and with the Historical Committee in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Subsequently they entered into a contract with Author John Rolfe Burroughs to write the Association's centennial history.

Most of this information was taken from The Guardian of the Grasslands interview done with Carl Thomas Lauritsen Jorgensen, July 28, 1969, by John Rolfe Burroughs.
Rachel was born August 12, 1911, in Flagstaff, Arizona. We used to tease her about not being born in the United States. Arizona, was made a state in 1912. She was the daughter of Henry Edward Buckles, and Sarah Ellen McConaghy.

Carl and Rachel Jorgensen had three children.
Carl Ray Jorgensen was born May 14, 1931, in Rock Springs, Wyoming. He married Mary Caroline Brookshire, July 9, 1960 in Rawlins, Wyoming. They have five children, two girls, and three boys. Julie Ellen, Nels Howard, Carl Edward, Carol Marie, and Scott Ray. Margie Lareen Jorgensen was born January 2, 1934, in Rock Springs, Wyoming. She married James Monroe Thomas, June 3, 1954, in Pinedale, Wyoming. They have four children, Joslyn Rae, Kevin James, Brett Lee, and Lisa Renee. Nancy Lee Jorgensen was born May 19, 1941, in Rock Springs, Wyoming.
She married Max Golden Carter, May 27, 1960, in Salt Lake City, Utah. They have two children, Shayne Max and Daniel Lee.

Carl Jorgensen served as the first President of the Green River Cattlemans Association, also served as president of the Wyoming Stockgrowers Association. He was also a member of The American National Cattlemens Association. He has been a member of the Board of Directors and chairman of brands and theft committee of the American National Cattlemens Association. Carl Jorgensen was the first president of the Wyoming Beef Council, which he helped organize. He served as Water Commissioner of District No. 7, in Sublette County, and served on the Boulder District School Board for eight years. He served for eight years on the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission, both as Vice President and as President. Carl was a 32 degree Mason, Past Master of Franklin Blue Lodge No. 7, A member of the Royal Arch Commandery, Consistory, and Shrine. Past Associate Guardian of Job's Daughters. Carl Jorgensen was inducted into the Northern International Stock Show Hall of Fame in Billings, Montana, on October 20, 1976.
Rachel Jorgensen was a member of the Congregational Church, The Eastern Star, The Cow Belles of Sublette County, the Cow Belles Auxiliary of the Wyoming Stockgrowers, Past Guardian of Job's Daughters.
Rachel died January 5, 1982, in Green River, Wyoming. Carl died February 21, 1988, in Pinedale, Wyoming. Carl and Rachel are buried in the family plot in the cemetery in Pinedale, Wyoming.
Carl Jorgensen had an active part in the development of the ranching industry in the state of Wyoming, he was considered one of the outstanding ranchers of the state.

GREEN RIVER - Mass of Christian Burial for Green River resident Norma Ellen (Buckles) Gamble, 83, will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 26, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Green River by Fr. Tom Sheridan. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service-time.

She died Oct. 23, 2004, at Castle Rock Convalescent Center in Green River.

Born Feb. 7, 1921, in Green River, she was the daughter of Henry Edward "Buck" and Sarah Ellen "Sadie" (McConaghy) Buckles of Reliance. A lifelong resident of Sweetwater County, she moved at age 2 to Reliance with her parents and was raised and educated there. She was a member of the town's first aid team, which is comparable to today's mine rescue teams in Sweetwater County.
After graduating as valedictorian of Reliance High School class of 1938, she received a normal diploma in elementary education from the University of Wyoming in 1940 and finally completed her degree in 1964. She started her teaching career in Burntfork in 1940 and initially lived with Jerrine Rupert and her stepfather, Clyde Stewart; Jerrine was the daughter of Wyoming author Elinor Pruitt Stewart, who wrote "Letters of a Woman Homesteader."

She met Robert "Bob" Gamble while teaching in Burntfork and they were married Feb. 21, 1942, in Randolph, Utah.

A schoolteacher for more than 39 years in the Burntfork and McKinnon area, she taught kindergarten through eighth grade at various times and served as head teacher for many years.

She was initiated into the Order of Eastern Star in 1940 by her mother, who was worthy matron, and received a 50-year pin in 1990. A member of the first county fair board in 1947, she was secretary of the 4-H Council in the 1950s and a 4-H leader for many years. She helped organize the Sweetwater Cowbelles and served as president for five years. In 1987, she was chosen homemaker of the year and, in 1998, was nominated for cattleperson of the year.

In 1990, she was co-chairman of the McKinnon Centennial Celebration; and, with Francie Anderson, co-authored "Links to the Past," an anthology of memories of the citizens of Burntfork and McKinnon. She was given the Susan J. Quealy award in 1991 for outstanding leadership in the Extension Home Economics Program and was on the advisory board of Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs.

She began her haying career with a team mowing hay and retired as a hydra-loader operator. Her passion was fishing with her grandsons, using her own hand-tied flies. Also, she spent hours preparing clues for an annual family treasure hunt at Easter.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen Lewis of Green River; three grandsons; four great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and eight nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son-in-law; parents; three sisters, infant Rachel Eldora, Ione Belle Jacobs and Rachel McConaghy Jorgensen; two brothers, Harry Edward and John Warren Buckles; two brothers-in-law; and her husband's parents.
