Roger Thomas Blades, 89, passed away Sunday, June 29, 2003, at his home in Bartlesville, Okla.

He was born Nov. 20, 1913, in Randall, Kan., to Joseph Brewer Blades, M.D., and Goldie Lenore
Buckles Blades.

Roger joined Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville in 1936. He served Phillips in the
Engineering Department and Patent Division until he retired in 1978 after 42 years of service.

He wed Jamesina Hunter in 1947 in Independence, Kan. After Jamesina's death in 1987, he married
Norma Ruth Pitcock Bowles in 1990. In recent years, they had enjoyed international and domestic
travel, the latter of which often took them to visit their 14 grandchildren.

Roger is survived by his wife, Norma; three children, Brian Blades and wife Kathryn of Sugar
Land, Brenda Karl and husband Kevin of Cedarburg, Wis., and Barry Blades and wife Janis of
Wichita, Kan; three stepsons, David Lance Bowles, M.D., and wife Cecilia of Athens, William
Michael Bowles of Palo Alto, Calif., and Scott Martin Bowles and wife Suzy of Fort Worth; eight
grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be sent to Roger's favorite charity, World
Neighbors, 4127 N.W. 122nd St., Oklahoma City, Okla., 73120, or to First Christian Church, P.O.
Box 1177, Bartlesville, Okla., 74005-1177.

Homer L. Bird 1923 - 2008

ALBERT — Homer L. Bird, 85, died Aug. 30 at Mount Hope. Born April 6, 1923, in Independence, he was the son of Harry C. and Ruth Buckles Bird. He grew up on and farmed land two miles east of Albert that was originally acquired by his grandfather, passed on to his father, and then passed on to him and his brother Ted. After graduating from Great Bend High School, he attended Kansas State University for two years, then enlisted in the United States Army on May 3, 1944. While on leave between assignments, Homer married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Marie Amerine, on May 29, 1944. He then served in the United States Army Air Corps until he was discharged on Sept. 17, 1945. Homer was a B-17 bomber pilot during World War II and flew 28 combat missions over northern Italy, the Balkans and Germany. After the war, he returned to the family farm where he and Virginia raised their son, Lynn, and daughter, Lisa.
In addition to his love of the land and his family, Homer was passionate about the game of golf, winning or placing high in many tournaments throughout Kansas as a younger man and later in his life maintaining his health as long as possible in order to play one more time even if it was just a few holes. In his younger days, he enjoyed bowling, playing bridge and dancing. Throughout his life, he was an avid K-State Wildcats fan and loved to tell stories and jokes. Homer was quick to offer a helping hand to anyone in need and spent time volunteering with the Great Bend Evening Lions Club, RSVP and the Barton County Historical Society.

Mr. Bird was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Evening Lions Club, the American Legion Argonne Post No. 180 and the Elks Lodge No. 1127, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Bird, of Mount Hope; a son, Lynn Bird and wife Patricia of Boulder, Colo; a daughter, Lisa Riedel and husband Bert of Andale; four grandchildren, Jason Bird, Joshua Bird, Stefanie (Bird) Stafford and Bret Riedel; and three great-grandchildren, Colby Bird, Logan Bird and Jaden Stafford; and five siblings, Daniel Keith Bird of Danville, Calif., Jean McClelland of Sacramento, Calif; Kathy Metcalfe of Fairfield, Calif; Ted Bird of Albert and Max Bird of Tulsa, Okla.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Road, Great Bend, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Inurnment will be at the Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in Homer’s honor either to the First United Methodist Church or Barton County Historical Society. Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.bryantfh.net.
