Gertrude Ellen Proctor was born on Jan 27, 1920 at Bloomfield Twp., Missaukee County, Michigan. She was the daughter of Walter Robert Proctor and Almyra Olivia Hall. Gertrude married Gerald Alfred Johnson, son of Nels Ludwig Johnson and Hattie Peterson, on Oct 1, 1938 at Cadillac, Wexford County, Michigan.
      Gertrude was born at home, an old lumber shanty down the road from her Aunt Lulu's hous on the creek. When she was almost 3 years old, her mother and older sister died. She was then "passed around to relatives," until she was 4 years old. Her relatives were unable to continue raising her without support from her father. She was adopted late in the smmer of her 4th year by Harrisons. Gertrude remembers "Ma" Harrison came to pick her up with a Buick Touring car with the top down. She and her Aunt Lula did not know she was being adopted. Gertie ran and hid in the closet under the stairs. Her older cousins came and pulled her out. She stated she threw a fit, determined not to go. She was dragged to the car. Ma Harrison told Gertie she would now be her little girl. They loaded her into the car, got her belongings together and loaded them in. Ma Harrison was a fast driver. Gertied remembers thinking if she had slowed up she would have jumped out. When they pulled into the yard, Ma grabbed her arm and took her into the house. Gertie was still ready to run. Once in the house, she met her new brothers and their friends. Gertie was introduced as their little sister and recalls her new brothers showing her off. She said she was still ready to run. She remembers sleeping in a bed at the foot of Ma and Pa Harrison's bed for about six months. She was then moved to a cot in the dining room. Later they rearranged the house so all the boys had a big bedroom downstairs. Ma and Pa moved into the big bedroom upstairs, Gertie into the other. She continued to have thoughts of running back to Aunt Lulu's. She recalls walking to the corner and waiting many times for Aunt Lulu to drive by and take her back. Gertie thinks she may have handled this better if she had been prepared for it. Aunt Lulu did not know Gertie was being adopted out and yelled at Walt. She was very angry about the choice.

Gertie attended Chart class with Miss Ditto in Manton. She attended first through seventh grades at Rollins School. She participated in the Canning Club while in 7th grade, winning first place at the county fair for her canned goods. She was younger than the other members and was allowed in by the leader, Mrs. Siddall. She describes herself as a fussy canner, sharing that Ma was frustrated with how picky she was. In the 8th grade she went to Manton, graduating in 1938. She was in the Glee Club and played the Baritone in the Band. She was active in home ec. She was in the church chior and orchestra.

At around 12 or 13 years of age, Gertie recalls her brothers planting 30 acres of potatoes. They hired her to pick them for $.02 a bushel and she made more off the sales than they did. They had about $1 a bushel into them and the potatoes sold for only $.15 a bushel that year.

Gertie picked cherries every summer to earn money for school clothes. One summer she went to Traverse City with her brothers to pick them. She stayed with the Knapp family and became good friends with their daughter Mildred.

While still in high school she met Gerald. After graduation she had an arguement with Ma who wanted her to work and bring money home to them because they had supported her through high school. She left home, moving in with her birth father Walt in Morey. She enjoyed spending time with Walt's housekeeper, Hazel. She lived there until she married Gerald in October.

Gerald was working for Willis Holmberg as a farm laborer and had a room there. They stayed there one night and then rented the front of a large farm house, doing repairs in leiu of rent payments. Around Thanksgiving they moved to Detroit so Gerald could start a new job at Ford Motor Company.

In Detroit, the Johnson's rented an apartment on Prarie Avenue. It was a four family flat, two apartments upstairs, two downstairs. They lived downstairs. It had one bedroom and a Murphy bed. They purchased their own washer and used it in the washer room down stairs, hanging their clothes outside to dry. Each family had a wash day. After about 6 months, they moved upstairs, living there for two years. The new apartment had a better stove and refrigerator and was on the south side.

Just prior to the birth of their second child, they rented a house in Romolus. It had a chemical toilet and Gertie recalls not liking it much. She had good neighbors who did not know she was pregnant until she missed her and learned Gertie had had a baby.

After about a year they bought a two bedroom unfinished home in Wyandott. They did not like the small bathroom in the house and tore down the walls to make one large bathroom and one bedroom. Gerald never knew where the walls would be when he came home, because Gertie often moved the particians until she got them how she wanted them. They traded with a man who did plaster to get the walls finished.

Over the years the Johnsons would visit northern Michigan and dreamed of returning as soon as possible. While visiting one time they bought a farm in Colfax Township west of Manton. The home needed a lot of work.
