on a summer day at marysville, fremont, idaho --- yes it wa s the first day of summer, the 21 june 1910, twin baby girl s were born to horton b leavitt and lurinda hendricks leavi tt. my twin came into the world at 10:00 a.m. and i arrive d at 10:45 a.m. marva, my twin was as pink as a rose, an d i was as white as a lily. mother often said these were o ur natural names.
as only one set of clothes were ready, my mothers very goo d friend, mimie stott made a complete new layette and whe n she brought them to mother she picked up one twin, whic h was me and said, "oh lue, name this one for me." so i wa s given the name of "mamie."
marva's hair grew long and curly but mine came out making u s look very different for quite a while. i was content t o sit on the floor and let marva bring toys and other thing s to me as she walked months before i did, also if any on e gave her anything she would reach out her other hand to b ring the same to me.
we were 3 1/2 years my sister, druzilla, who was 11 years o ld at the time became very ill and passed away 24 march 191 4. one week later, dorris, was born, but he was crippled t hrough out his life, which has been a great care and worr y for my parents. i remember we would have to all be ver y quiet because of mother's health. she had several nervou s breakdowns caused by the condition at the birth of my bro ther. my father thought a trip would help mother's health , so she with we children left on the train for oregon, t o visit my uncle asa. while on the train an officer of th e salvation army noticed my twin and i, and came to mothe r and wanted to buy us. he offered mother a large sum of m oney but she told him she didn't have children to sale.
my father was active in church affairs, the first i remembe r about him, he was bishop of the marysville ward. he bapt ized marva and i in the snake river in july 1918, and i wa s confirmed by diamond loosli.
at 9, my father's health became poorly so after selling ou r farm we moved to rigby, idaho. there, we attended school , church, were in sewing clubs, went swimming in the near b y canal and had piano lessons. at 10 years of age, we ha d our tonsils removed and at 14 i had rheumatism, also my t eeth were in poor condition and i had a lot of work done o n them, one front tooth caused an absess which caused my ey es to become very sore. i was out of school, (my freshma n year) for 6 weeks, most of the time with a bandage over b oth eyes.
my grandma, lucinda bess hendricks, lived with us. i wel l remember the day she passed away, it was about noon an d i stood beside her bed. she was the first person i had e ver seen die and it truly broke my heart. i had always lov ed her and had always admired her trim, neat appearance, ne ver a hair out of place. i remember one time, mother had a sked me to help grandma hendricks walk out side for a while . i helped her out but i became interested in something el se and when grandma tried to go back to the house she fell . mother was very angry with me for neglecting her and i w as truly sorry for my carelessness.
my folks moved to a farm in 1926 at bybee ward, near rigb y and to idaho falls, idaho in 1929. it was while we wer e on the farm that i started to date nathan merrill, the fi rst date was a blind date arranged by his cousin, ralph haw ke, who at the time was dating my twin. we usually had tw o dates a week, on sat. night we would go dancing at rivers ide gardens, and on wednesday nights, we would attend a sho w. i always enjoyed going with him.
in idaho falls, i worked part time in the montgomery ward s tore and in sept. 1929 i started to work at the lds hospita l, where i worked until i was married to nathan merrill i n the salt lake temple the 23 dec 1931. joseph fielding sm ith performed the ceremony. my aunt gerogann karren and na than's relation, horace cummings was with us.
our first residence was one large room in nathan's father' s house. within the next year we moved into our own two ro om log house. on september 16, 1932 our first son, wayne , was born in the hospital at idaho falls, idaho. he had v ery poor health and as we didn't have a car, i stayed wit h my parents in idaho falls where i could be close to a doc tor, also the winter was very cold, getting down to 55 degr ees below. i moved back to annis to our new log house in m arch. it was wonderful to be back with my husband as he ha d stayed with his parents most of the time while i was away.
in september, 1934, louis, our 2nd son, was born in 1936 ou r daughter, phyllis, was born. wayne's health was still po orly and in september of that same year, he was operated o n for tonsils in roberts, idaho and in november of that sam e year, he was operated on for the removal of an eye, in po catello, idaho. this made me heartsick bbut he has truly b een blessed, through his schooling he has been a very goo d student graduating from grade school, high school and fro m the b.y.u. with high honors. he has also served a 2 yea r mission to the northern states mission for the lds church.
louis has always been a healthy child never having a sick d ay except the child diseases. he would trail behind his fa ther every day until late at night. his school never bothe red him much being interested in the out-of-doors. he coul d catch a fish when others standing on either side couldn' t even get a bite and could shot down 4 ducks at a time. a fter he graduated from high school, he helped his father o n the farm, also buying some cattle for himself which he wo uld fatten and sell. he joined the national guard and trai ned with them in rigby, idaho and in fort belvoir, virginia . in nov. 1956 to 1958 he served as a missionary to the gr eat lakes, on his return he married karen joyce stucki on 1 6 jan 1959.
phyliss has always been a very good girl, always willing t o help in the house, with the cooking and a very good chil d to help with the other children. she could read long bef ore she started to school and she has spent many hours read ing to children both younger and older than herself. she g raduated from high school at 16 and was employed in the rig by bank until she was married in nov 1955 to larry lamar jo hnson.
stanley was born 2 nov 1940. lamont on 24 april 1942, an d clayton on 10 nov 1943. the three boys have had very muc h enjoyment and fun together. stanly has been a very goo d student, very even tempered and seldom getting angry. la mont has been a hot tempered child, oft timer bumping his h ead on the chairs and floor, but he is also very entertaini ng, he is very religious, receiving many 100% awards. clay ton was opereated on when only 19 days old for a strangulat ed hernia, again at 4 years of age and then again for 2 her nias at the age of 10. school has been hard for him but h e is a very good worker on the farm.
it was the 14 dec 1944 a (stillborn) baby boy was born to u s. i was not allowed to see him because of my condition . he was buried in the annis cemetery with bishop victor h all dedicating the grave.
on 3 march 1949 twins arrived at the lds hospital for us . reed, 8 lbs at 6:19 and ross 7 lbs at 6:29. they were v ery wide awake and happy babies. they always seemed glad t o be alive. they are very much alike, however, they are no t identical.
2 july 1955 a baby girl, cristeen, was born to us. the tin y bundle had to be worked with for quite a while before sh e started to breathe and also had a very difficult time fo r weeks before she was completely normal. she is a very ha ppy and healthy child now.
we have visited many states in the mid-west and also the so uth western part of the united states.
i have worked in the church most of my life. my first posi tion was in the idaho falls mia acting as secretary. in an nis, i have been organist for the priamry, sunday school, a nd relief society, also assisting the ward organist for th e past 27 years; a teacher in the mia, and primary, also a s block teacher for relief society; counselor in primary un der 3 different presidents; served as president of the prim ary, and also served on rigby stake primary board.
i have played in the high school orchestras, a dance band , have sung in chiors as long as i can remember. i've love d music. i usually play my piano for an hour after the fam ily is in bed at night. i love flowers, sun rises, sunset s and children, along with my prayers, my church and my god.

      Doris Durell Leavitt was born on Apr 3, 1914 at Marysville, Fremont County, Idaho. She was the daughter of Horton Brinkerhoff Leavitt and Lurinda Alice Hendricks. Doris Durell Leavitt died on Dec 23, 1982 at age 68. Doris was buried on Dec 27, 1982 at Pineview Cemetery, Ashton, Fremont County, Idaho.

      Elizabeth Reed was born on Apr 22, 1824 at Simpson County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Benjamin Lewis and Elizabeth Reed. Elizabeth married Allen Hendricks, son of Samuel Hendricks and Rebecca Dorris. Elizabeth Reed died on Jun 12, 1850 at along the North Platte River, Nebraska, at age 26; of cholera.
