JOHN NELSON HENDRICKS crossed the plains as a child in 1850 and became an orphan at that time. Josiah Hendricks cared for the four orph­aned children until they reached Salt Lake City, where four of Allen's sis­ters were. Samuel, the baby, and Elizabeth, the oldest child, were taken by Neriah Lewis, and William, the second child, by Tabitha Hendricks Ricks. John, three years of age, was given to Mr. and Mrs. Rosel Hyde. Times weren't good and Rosel Hyde found it hard providing for his family. One day while visiting his brother-in-law, Jonathan Holmes, he learned the Holmes family would like to have a boy, as their children were girls. So when John was five years old, Rosel Hyde took him to Jonathan's home in Farmington and in exchange took home one of the Holmes' mules. Until grown, John found love and security in this fine home. In 18 64 he drove Jonathan Holmes team and outfit to the Missouri River and brought back the John McAllister family.

Having enlisted in the Davis County militia he went with Captain Robert W... Burton's company to Sanpete Co. to serve in the Black Hawk War in 1866.
Two years later at the age of 21 he and MARTHA WEAVER of Millville, Ut. were married in the Salt Lake Endowment House. This did not prove to be a happy marriage and in less than two years they were Divorced. There were no children born of this. marriage.

He worked in the mines in Bingham Canyon and became a foreman in Bingham's first mill. While there he was leaded which caused him to be blind for three years. During this period he lived with relatives in Richmond. An operation was performed on his eyes and his sight was restored. Now he engaged in freighting from Corinne, Ut., making trips to the mines in Montana and those on the Salmon River in Idaho. He engaged in railroad grading and construction work and followed this work the rest of his life. He married 5 Mar. 1884 in Richmond, Ut. EMILY MINNIE JARVIS, daughter of Henry John and Betsy Tabitha Luckcock (Mason) Jarvis. She was born 24 Feb. 1857 in Salt Lake City, Ut.

In the spring of 1885, there was very little railroad work to be obtained. Therefore, John and his wife went with others to build a new home in Wilford, Ida. The following Nov. their first child was born. The next spring John took his wife and baby back to Richmond and he left for his railroad work. They never returned to Wilford.

The next six years John and Emily lived wherever his work took him. The year 1892 found him in Portland, Ore. building the Multnomah Boulevard. While there the dreaded disease of glanders broke out among his horses. State officials came to his camp and shot all his horses, piled up all the tents, harnesses,' etc. and burned them. He received no compensation for the loss. This and the beginning of the great depression gave him a finan­cial blow from which he never recovered.

He moved his family back to Richmond and the next fall went to Mexico and worked as foreman in .a mine for a little over a year. He then labored in Richmond until Feb. 1897 when he went to work as a foreman for his brother, Samuel, who had a railroad contract in Mexico. In 1900 his brother, Samuel died in Mexico and he took over his outfit.

In the fall of 1902 he was operated upon for cancer in his leg and the following spring he resumed work for 10 days but the wound broke out afresh and
he never worked again. The cancer took its toll March 20, 1904, when he died and was buried near the Lerdo Hospital, Rorreon, Mexico, in accordance with the Mexican law which required burial within twenty four hours of death and within six miles of the place of death. So he died among strangers without one friend or relative to hold a funeral. Lee Wason, a business partner, visited him Saturday helping to make arrangements for him to be sent to the United States - John died the following day and was buried Monday. This very day (Monday) Lee Wason died of black small pox. Tuesday a mutual busi­ness friend, C. W. Bresler, who frequently visited John, called at the Hospi­tal and was shocked to find he had passed away and was buried.
John's wife, Emily, died in Ogden, Utah 14 Oct. 1934 and was buried in Richmond, Ut.

     Martha married John Nelson Hendricks, son of Allen Hendricks and Elizabeth Reed, in 1868 at Endowment House, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah; no issue. Martha Weaver and John Nelson Hendricks were divorced circa 1870.

      Emily Minnie Jarvis was born on Feb 24, 1857. She was the daughter of Henry John Jarvis and Betsy Tabitha Luckcock Mason. Emily married John Nelson Hendricks, son of Allen Hendricks and Elizabeth Reed, on Mar 5, 1884 at Richmond, Cache County, Utah. Emily Minnie Jarvis died on Oct 14, 1934 at Ogden, Weber County, Utah, at age 77. Emily was buried at Richmond City Cemetery, Richmond, Cache County, Utah.

     Caroline Isaacson was the daughter of Niels Isaacson. Caroline married Samuel Allen Hendricks, son of Allen Hendricks and Elizabeth Reed, on Feb 28, 1895 at Richmond, Cache County, Utah. Caroline Isaacson died on May 13, 1899 at Richmond, Cache County, Utah.

      Edna Hendricks was born on Jul 8, 1900 at Richmond, Cache County, Utah. She was the daughter of Alfred Dorris Hendricks and Annie Jorgensen. Edna married Osborne Johnson, son of Lars Christian Johnson and Matilda Madson, on Dec 15, 1920 at Logan Temple, Logan, Cache County, Utah. Edna Hendricks and Osborne Johnson were divorced. Edna married Thomas Woods Pollard, son of Thomas Woods Pollard and Nancy Mattie Coudle, on Sep 29, 1951 at Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada. Edna Hendricks died on Nov 9, 1990 at age 90.

      Rayman Andrew Hendricks was born on Dec 2, 1902 at Richmond, Cache County, Utah. He was the son of Alfred Dorris Hendricks and Annie Jorgensen. Rayman married Laura E. Buck, daughter of Joseph Buck and Martha Bennington, on Sep 18, 1922 at Logan Temple, Logan, Cache County, Utah. Rayman married Cecilla Juanita Wright on Sep 5, 1935 at Ogden, Weber County, Utah. Rayman Andrew Hendricks died on Sep 29, 1971 his last known address was at San Diego County, California, according to the Social Security Death Index.
     He was also known as Ray Hendricks. He was also known as Raymond Andrew Hendricks.

     Gerald was buried at Downey, Bannock County, Idaho. He was born on Jul 26, 1910 at Richmond, Cache County, Utah. He was the son of Alfred Dorris Hendricks and Annie Jorgensen. Gerald married Jennie Rae Bloxham, daughter of Richard Thomas Bloxham and Elsie Henderson, on Feb 8, 1935 at Pocatello, Bannock County, Idaho. Gerald Kenneth Hendricks died on Jan 31, 1992 at Idaho Falls, Bonneville County, Idaho, at age 81.

      Asa Jorgen Hendricks was born on Apr 10, 1915 at Richmond, Cache County, Utah. He was the son of Alfred Dorris Hendricks and Annie Jorgensen. "A SKETCH OF MY LIFE AS NEARLY AS I CAN REMEMBER IT"
My children have often asked me to write a few of the happenings of my early life.
I was born January 7, 1855 in Manchester, England. My earliest recollections are
of a large city where all was rush and roar. It was the city of Manchester, one
of the largest manufacturing cities in the world. There I was born and lived until
I was seven years old, when my parents decided to emigrate to America.
On the morning of April 14, 1861 we bade farewell to home and loved ones, knowing
we should never see them in this world again. It was a sad parting. I shall
never forget the grief of my grandparents when they bid us all goodbye.
On April 16 we sailed from Liverpool on an old sailing vessel called The Under-
writer. We were five weeks on the sea, buffeted by the wind and the waves.
After many storms and much seasickness we landed in New York and were taken to
Castle Garden and kept until our baggage was inspected by the United States
Officials.
I can remember something of the trials and hardships of the Saints at Winter
Quarters where we had to stay a month waiting for the ox-teams from Utah to take
us across the plains. There were four families of us living In an old room and
to make matters worse we children all had the measles. I also remember two young
men being drowned while we were there. They were the only children of a widow.
I shall never forget seeing them laid in the grave nor the sorrow of their
heartbroken mother. She only lived to travel a hundred miles on the plains when
she died. The Captain sent her body to be buried by the side of her two boys.
The first Indians I ever saw came to our camp for food. The women and children
were frightened to death. They thought they would surely be killed.
I cannot remember all the details of that journey, I was too young, but there
were some things stamped upon my memory that I can never forget. Many a night
after we had made our beds upon the ground and were all asleep a thunder storm
would arise and the wind would blow our tents down, drenching us with rain. The
children would cling around mother's knee, hide our faces In her lap and cry
until daylight. At some points of the journey the Indians were very troublesome,
especially In the Black Hills. They would try to steal our cattle.
All who were able had to walk for there were three families to a wagon and only
women with young children could ride. I was allowed to walk in the afternoon
with my father; in this way I walked many miles crossing the plains. One day
the Captain warned all those who walked to keep together and not go too far
ahead of the wagons for fear of Indians, for they had been threatening us.
Another day I gave them all a scare, and myself too. The company had been
camping at noon and as the teamsters were hitching up their oxen, the young
people went on ahead as usual. I thought I was big enough to go along too. They
tried to send me back but I would not go, so when they came to a stream of water
they would not help me over, thinking I would wait for the wagon train. But I
did not. I followed up the stream thinking I would find a narrow place to cross
over, but did not. After going for sometime I thought of the Indians, became
frightened and ran back to the road but could not see the wagon train. They had
crossed the stream and gone on but not knowing this I ran back along the road
thinking to meet them. Imagine my terror when after running back for a long distance I
could see nothing of them. In the meantime Father had caught up with the crowd that I
had followed. Upon learning that they had left me at the stream he became alarmed and
with a number of other men came back to find me. They searched up and down the
stream without success, of course, because I was running back down the road as fast as
I could. At last they saw my footprints in the dust and by following them found
me. A badly frightened child I surely was.
We arrived in Salt Lake City In October, the exact date I have forgotten. We were
taken to what was then called Emigration Square, near where the City and County
Building now stands. Our boxes and bedding were unloaded and there we were left,
not knowing a soul in the city and we surely felt we were homeless. Father got a
tent somewhere and we lived in that until he got work. About two weeks after
that he moved us up to Bountiful, having found some friends he had known in the
old country. They were very glad to see us and wanted us to make our home there
but Father was advised to go to Cache Valley, as men of his trade (he was a
machinist) were badly needed there.
Oh, what a desolate place Richmond was then. Just a small fort of about two
dozen houses built close together for protection. All had dirt floors. Father
bought a one room log house. The window had no glass, only a piece of white
cloth tacked over It. Father made a bedstead, a table and some stools; and there
we spent our first winter in Utah.
In the latter part of March 1862, my little sister died. She had been sick for
a long time and Mother could not get proper nourishment for her. (Everyone was
poor in those days.) The night she died we had no light but that of the fire,
which was very poor because the wood was so green. My little sister was the
third person to be buried in the Richmond cemetery.
Many a time we children have cried for bread but Mother had none to give. Only
a dish of boiled wheat and a little milk. There was no mill in those days.
Father helped build the High Creek mill in 1862 or 1863, I forget which. He
also helped build the first thresher and the first spinning wheel.
Quite a number of people had moved into Richmond by this time and they laid it
out in city lots. Each man was given a lot to build on. It was while Father
was moving our log cabin that trouble with the Indians broke out in Franklin.
Every able bodied man in the county was called to go up there and help settle
the difficulties, and only the old men were left to guard the women and children.
We had an old empty shanty to live in while the log house was being moved, and
when night came on Mother was very frightened in the open shack with her little
children. She took us and went to stay with a neighbor whose house had not yet
been pulled down. It was a terrible night. None dared go to bed for fear the
Indians might slip away from Franklin, knowing the women were alone.
The next event fresh in my memory is the grasshopper plague. Our crops were
nice and green when they came. They were so thick in the air it looked like a
cloud as they settled on the ground. It looked as though our crops would surely
be eaten. My mother used to take all the children early in the morning and go
to the field to fight grasshoppers. We would walk up and down through the wheat
waving a rag fastened to a stick to keep them moving, but it seemed all would
be taken. The President of the Church called on all the people to fast and pray
from sundown one day until sundown the next. They held a fast meeting at ten
o'clock. I remember it as though it were yesterday. At the close of the prayer
the grasshoppers rose in a mass so thick it obscured the sun as a cloud. They
did not light again, but left, and our crops were saved. This was a testimony
to me that the Lord hears and answers prayers.
I remember the first school I attended at Richmond. It was a log house with a
chimney built in one end. The fireplace was the only heat we had. The seats
were made from slabs with pegs for legs. There were no desks to work on. The
teacher had a small table for his desk. On it was a small cowbell which he
used to call school. He also had a rule nearby which he wasn't slow in using.
If we drew a picture we were punished. I have had many a whack over the hand.
What writing we did was on slates. There were very few books and we had to
borrow from each other. We had a small primer that was published in Salt Lake
City. It was called the Deseret Primer and contained about a dozen leaves.
Most of the homes in Richmond were made of logs and the roofs of dirt, with
mustard and sunflowers growing on the roofs. I used to herd sheep on the
hillsides of Richmond day after day. My mother spun the yarn and wove the cloth
to make our clothes. In summer we all went barefooted. In the winter a shoemaker
used any kind of leather to make us shoes. Our hats were braided by our mothers
out of straw called shakers.
I remember Father helping to build the High Creek and Muddy mills. Before they
were built our diet consisted principally of .boiled wheat, with segos for
dessert. Whenever me got flour it came from Logan. For a time Father worked
in Salt Lake City in President Young's woolen mills.
We could not buy matches any nearer than Salt Lake City and they cost 75 cents
a box so, of course, we did not always have matches. We would watch the neighbors
and when we saw a smoking chimney we would take an old tin plate and beg a little
fire to start ours.
I watched the soldiers when they went up north to Battle Creek to fight the
Indians. The mud was so deep it was up to the hubs of the wagons and the soldiers
were walking in mud over their boats.
I recall such gruesome incidents as an Indian beating a white woman. A white man
shot him and the Indians wanted to kill the white man to go to the Happy Hunting
grounds. It caused so much trouble that all the men in Cache Valley were called
to settle it.

     Robert married Louise Larsen, daughter of Louis William Larsen and Ada Vilate Hendricks.

      Thomas William Larsen was born on Feb 21, 1921 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. He was the son of Louis William Larsen and Ada Vilate Hendricks. Thomas married Juana Marie Broussard, daughter of Deisre Louis Broussard and Martha Effie Rush; no issue. Thomas William Larsen died on Feb 20, 1945 at Reva Ridge, Mount Belevedere, Italy, at age 23. Thomas was buried on Mar 12, 1949 at City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.
     He began military service on Mar 23, 1942 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah; Private, U. S. Army; 3 years college; single without dependents; 71 inches tall; 176 lbs.

      Juana Marie Broussard was born on Aug 16, 1917 at Anahuac, Chambers County, Texas. She was the daughter of Deisre Louis Broussard and Martha Effie Rush. Juana married Thomas William Larsen, son of Louis William Larsen and Ada Vilate Hendricks; no issue. Juana married Claudius Alva Banks.

      Almira Hendricks was born on Oct 9, 1910 at Oxford, Franklin County, Idaho. She was the daughter of Franklin Davenport Hendricks and Vilate Walker. Almira married Vernon Bair.

      Franklin Davenport Hendricks was born on Feb 14, 1916 at Preston, Franklin County, Idaho. He was the son of Franklin Davenport Hendricks and Vilate Walker. Franklin Davenport Hendricks died on Jul 7, 1984 at Los Gatos, Santa Clara County, California, at age 68.

      Afton Hendricks was born on Apr 8, 1918 at Preston, Franklin County, Idaho. She was the daughter of Franklin Davenport Hendricks and Vilate Walker. Afton married Doval Marion Anderson, son of Dennis Marion Anderson and Clara Eaton, on Nov 23, 1939 at Logan, Cache County, Utah. Afton Hendricks died on May 3, 1987 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, at age 69.

      Carma Hendricks was born on May 18, 1919 at Preston, Franklin County, Idaho. She was the daughter of Franklin Davenport Hendricks and Vilate Walker. Carma married Ray C. Sanders.

      Kenneth Malcolm Hendricks was born on Sep 4, 1921 at Swan Lake, Bannock County, Idaho. He was the son of Franklin Davenport Hendricks and Vilate Walker. Kenneth married Gladys Gleeds on Jun 30, 1941 at Ogden, Weber County, Utah. Kenneth Malcolm Hendricks died in Feb, 1985 at Boise, Ada County, Idaho, at age 63.

      Glen Lincoln Hendricks was born on Feb 13, 1925 at Swan Lake, Bannock County, Idaho. He was the son of Franklin Davenport Hendricks and Vilate Walker. Glen married Louise Larson. Glen married Thelma C. (Unknown) in 1963. Glen Lincoln Hendricks died on Mar 27, 2009 at Clearfield, Davis County, Utah, at age 84.

Glen L. Hendricks of Roy, Utah passed away on March 27, 2009, in Clearfield, Utah. He was born February 12, 1925, in Swan Lake, Idaho to Franklin D. and Vilate Walker Hendricks. He married Thelma C. Hendricks in 1963.

He was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was and Elder and was proud to bless his grandson. He loved cars and enjoyed going to look at the new models of Ford. He loved motorcycles and supported MDA ride for life. He served his country in World War II. He drove semis for many years where he clocked over a million miles.

He is survived by Tamala V. and Fredrick.T. DeFreitas of Sacramento, CA; Rodney G. and Cindy L. Hendricks of Clearfield, UT; Kenneth C. Hendricks of Roy, UT; Teresa J and Steven L. Harmon of Clearfield, UT; Lewis L. and Lorraine Brown of Kemmerer, WY; Linda B. Hart of Clearfield, UT; 18 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great granddaughters and two special kitties, Shasta and Tiger, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Thelma C. Hendricks, his parents, Franklin and Vilate Walker Hendricks, nine sisters and 2 brothers and one son David B. Hendricks, and two grandchildren, and two step children Larry L. Brown and Loreen Brown.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday April 3, 2009 at 12:00 Noon, with a viewing prior to the service at 10:30 to 11:45 at Clearfield Chelemes Ward 1245 South 1175 East, Clearfield, UT. There will be a viewing Thursday April 2, 2009 from 6-8 pm at Memorial Mortuary 5850 South 900 East, Murray, UT.

      Farrell Dean Hendricks was born on Sep 19, 1927 at Preston, Franklin County, Idaho. She was the daughter of Franklin Davenport Hendricks and Vilate Walker. Farrell married Hyrum J. Smith.

      Claudia Hendricks was born on Oct 3, 1929 at Preston, Franklin County, Idaho. She was the daughter of Franklin Davenport Hendricks and Vilate Walker. Claudia married Robert Ray Scott on Jan 27, 1949; no issue. Claudia Hendricks and Robert Ray Scott were divorced. Claudia married Robert Seals in Oct, 1959. Claudia Hendricks died in Feb, 1985 at Idaho Falls, Bonneville County, Idaho, at age 55.

      Howard Dudge Passey was born on Apr 28, 1915 at Logan, Cache County, Utah. He was the son of Edward John Passey and Effie Budge. Howard married Beth Elena Hendricks, daughter of Lafayette Hendricks and Elizabeth Elena Webb, on Mar 17, 1937 at Logan, Cache County, Utah. Howard Dudge Passey died on Sep 21, 1983 at Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico, at age 68. Howard was buried at American Fork, Utah County, Utah.

     Edward married Effie Budge.

      Paul Leo Elieson was born on May 1, 1915 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. Paul married Gayle Hendricks, daughter of Walstein Hyer Hendricks and Effa Plant, on Nov 14, 1941 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. Paul Leo Elieson died on May 22, 1989 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, at age 74.

      Frank Joy Hudson was born on Oct 15, 1856 at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Thomas Nichols Hudson and Sarah Ellen Meserve. Frank married Elizabeth Vilate Van Noy, daughter of William Thomas Van Noy and Catherine Tabitha Hendricks, on Jul 25, 1883 at Beaver Canyon, Oneida County, Idaho. Frank Joy Hudson died on Aug 12, 1933 at age 76.

      Amelia May Hudson was born circa 1884 at Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana. She was the daughter of Frank Joy Hudson and Elizabeth Vilate Van Noy.

     Nora Fransen was the daughter of Franz Fransen. Nora married Samuel Tinsley Van Noy, son of William Thomas Van Noy and Catherine Tabitha Hendricks, circa 1907.

      Thelma Myrl Holdaway was born on Jul 25, 1904 at Vernal, Uinta County, Utah. She was the daughter of Thomas Teancum Holdaway and Mary Eliza White. Thelma married Malcolm Hendricks Merrill, son of Louis Edgar Merrill and Clara Hendricks, on Aug 11, 1926 at Logan, Cache County, Utah. Thelma Myrl Holdaway died on Jan 30, 1998 at Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, California, at age 93.

     Thomas married Mary Eliza White.

     Mary married Thomas Teancum Holdaway.

      Malcom Donald Merrill was born on Jun 18, 1927 at Saint Louis, Missouri. He was the son of Malcolm Hendricks Merrill and Thelma Myrl Holdaway. Malcom married Karen Nelson.
