He took the family to Louisiana in 1837 moving by team to Nashville and then by steamboat to New Orleans; then up the Red River and resided several years near Minden. Rebecca, having married in Jan. 1836, probably did not go to Louisiana but moved to Illinois with her husband, Neriah. In 1843 Neriah Lewis rode horseback from Illinois to Louisiana and induced his father-in-law to send the three small girls to Illinois with him. During the winter the family joined the Mormon church and in 1844 they moved to Nauvoo and cast their lot with the Saints. They soon started for the West and were present at Winter Quarters when the Mormon Batallion was called. A rude flat boat was constructed to cross the Missouri River and they joined Bishop George Miller's company for the West. After traveling a few hundred miles winter came on and some Ponca Indian Chiefs invited the party to leave the trail and winter with them. It was a cold bleak winter and there was much suffering. About 80 of the Company died of scurvy. When winter broke they made their way back to Winter Quarters and farmed that season. They moved to Iowa and then on to Platte Co., Mo. (near St. Joseph) where they remained two years and earned sufficient to outfit them for the journey to Utah. They joined Orson Pratt's Company in April 1851 with James Cummings as Captain and arrived in Salt Lake City in October 1851. A home was purchased in the 15th Ward but in 1852 they moved to Centerville for a short time.

Neriah Robert Lewis

Neriah Robert Lewis was born on Mar 10, 1843 at Carlinville, Macoupin County, Illinois. He was the son of Neriah Lewis and Rebecca Hendricks. Neriah married Amanda Jane Allred, daughter of Isaac Allred and Julia Ann Taylor, on Jan 20, 1864 at Richmond, Cache County, Utah. Neriah married Carolyn Hyer on Nov 22, 1869; no issue. Neriah Robert Lewis died on Oct 21, 1913 at Oxford, Franklin County, Idaho, at age 70. Neriah was buried on Oct 26, 1913 at Oxford City Cemetery, Oxford, Franklin County, Idaho.

He was also known as Robert Lewis. On Oct, 1851 arrived in the Salt Lake Valley with the James Cummings Company.

Neriah went with his father when the latter moved his home to Richmond, Utah . He helped his father with the farm work and the construction of his house. He later worked as a teamster and operated a freighting outfit of his own as well as taking care of his farm. In 1867 he quit freighting and devoted himself to building up his Richmond farm. Atintervals he worked on the Utah Northern and Northern Pacific Railroads. In 1882 he was called to be the bishop of the Oxford, Idaho , ward. His ranch was the finest in Oxford with excellent stock, a beautiful home, and fine farm. He was often encouraged to become involved in politics but refused, giving his reason that he needed the time for his work as a bishop. Benjamin married Eliza Ann Jenks, daughter of Robert Jenks and Emma Lovelege, on Jul 15, 1885. Benjamin married Barbara (Unknown). Benjamin Marion Lewis died on Aug 29, 1926 at Logan, Cache County, Utah, at age 85.

Benjamin was buried at Logan City Cemetery, Logan, Cache County, Utah.

They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on 7 October, 1851 in the Capt. James Cummings Company. He left a brief sketch of his life as follows:

"After living in Salt Lake City about two years we moved to Centerville, Davis County, where I was ordained to the lesser Priesthood. In 1855 I lived in Herriman, Salt Lake County, where I took an active part in ward affairs. While residing in the 16th Ward, Salt Lake City, in 1856 I was ordained a Seventy and received my endowments. During the winter of 1859-60 I made a trip to California for merchandise, and on returning to Utah I went to Logan, Cache County. In 1860 I was chosen captain of a company of minute men to guard the interests of the settlers against the Indians. I was engaged more or less in this work for many years. April 14, 1861 I was chosen to preside over the Saints in the First Ward Logan as Bishop. In the year 1863 I was set apart as a president in the 64th quorum of Seventy. For several years I served as President of the United Order in the First Ward, Logan. I did considerable work on the Central Pacific and the Utah Northern Railroads. In 1863 I was appointed road supervisor and served several terms in that capacity and also as water master. For a number of years I was a member of the Logan City Council. About 1875 I had charge of a company of men who worked at cutting and sawing logs for use in errecting the Logan Tabernacle. I also assisted in the erection of the Logan Temple. In 1901 after having presided over the First Ward for about 40 years, I resigned my position as Bishop and was chosen to act as counselor in the presidency of the High Priests quorum of the Cache Stake of Zion."
