She was born November 29, 1903 in Logan, Utah, a daughter of Herschel Bullen, Jr. and Mary Hendricks Bullen. She attended the Logan City schools and graduated from the Utah Agricultural College with a BA in English. She was a devoted student of the piano under the late S.E. Clark of Logan and graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied for three years. She taught piano in Logan for many years. She accompanied many vocal groups and vocalists much of her life. She was known for her calm manner, sweet, loving personality. She was a home person and gave a life of service to others. She was a person without guile.She is survived by her two brothers, Reed Bullen, Logan; T.H. (Tad) Bullen, Salt Lake City; one sister-in-law, Eva J. Bullen, Salt Lake City; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Lavona Bullen and one brother, Herschel Keith Bullen.

Reed Bullen 1906 ~ 2005 LOGAN, UTAH - Reed Bullen, our dear father passed away at age 98, Oct. 9, 2005 at Terrace Grove. Reed was born in Logan, Utah Nov. 17, 1906, the fourth child of Mary Hendricks and Herschel Bullen Jr. Reed married Kathryn Bowen on March 31, 1939. Their children include Mary Ann (Grayson S.) Wright Salt Lake City, Utah; Brooks (Dr. F. Zane) Jessen Ogden, Utah; Dr. Reed and Terri (Duran) Bullen, Logan, Utah; Jonathan William and Julie (Harris) Bullen, Rancho Sante Fe, California; Kathryn Louise (Mark B.) McEvoy Dammeron Valley, Utah. Reed had 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Herschel Keith, Lavona, Helen and Thurlow (Tad) Hendricks Bullen. One surviving sister-in-law, Marjorie Q. Bowen lives in Logan, Utah. Reed was an eternal optimist and had a very positive outlook throughout his diverse and industrious life. In addition to his many achievements he loved to fly fish, dance, garden, support Aggie athletics and play golf. He had a long and productive career in business, civic and church work. Reed along with his father brought radio broadcasting (KVNU 1938) to Cache Valley. He later brought cable television (North Utah Community TV) to Cache Valley in 1971. Reed as "Man on the Street" was recognized and well known for interviews and editorials about many issues concerning Cache Valley. Reed had 58 years of continuous service in broadcasting (KVNU and KVFM) and was inducted into the Utah Broadcasters Hall of Fame, (1985). Reed served six terms as a senator in the Utah State Senate, (1955-76). He distinguished himself as whip, majority leader and president (1963) and served three terms as chairman of the Legislative Higher Education Committee. He was a member of the Logan Rotary Club (1943-2006) and a lifetime member of the USAC Alumni Association. He was a member of the Sons of Utah Pioneers, a charter member of Gamma Kappa Chapter of Sigma Chi at USU (1925), a charter member of Round Valley Development Association, (1938), and an Honorary Colonels of the Utah National Guard, (1965). A lifelong loyal Aggie, Reed graduated from Utah State Agricultural College in 1929 with a degree in business, received the Distinguished Service Award (1977) and was awarded an honorary degree as Doctor of Business in 1999. He also did postgraduate work at the University of Utah and Stanford University Law School and later served on the USU Board of Trustees. Reed served as bishop of the Logan Eleventh Ward (1951-1958), Stake President of the USU first stake (1959-1972), Stake Patriarch (1972- 1978), and Logan Temple President (1978-84). Reed fell in love with his beloved wife Kathryn in 1937 and continues loving her and his family each and every day. While he traveled the world there was no place he would rather be than in his much loved Cache Valley. Reed's strong belief in the Gospel guided his life of faith and service to his Church, family and community. We will miss him and celebrate his example of a wonderful life lived very well indeed. A viewing will be held Friday Oct. 14th from 6-8 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary 34 East Center Street in Logan and on Saturday Oct. 15th at 10 a.m. at the church. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday Oct. 15th at the Lundstrom Park 3rd Ward chapel at 1260 North 1600 East in Logan, Utah. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery. Former Utah Sen. Reed Bullen died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, in west Logan. He was 98.

A Republican, he served six terms in the Utah Senate, from 1955 to 1976, serving in prominent leadership positions, including whip, majority leader and Senate president. Bullen also served three terms as chairman of the legislative Higher Education Committee.

Mr. Bullen, a prominent Logan businessman, was a pioneer of the radio and broadcast industry in Cache Valley, bringing KVNU to the radio dial in 1938 and North Utah Community TV, a cable network, to the valley in 1971. In 1985, he was inducted into the Utah Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

A former bishop, stake president and patriarch, Mr. Bullen also served a president of the Logan Temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, from 1978-84. He was born in Logan on Nov. 17, 1906, and graduated from the Utah State Agricultural College in 1929 with a business degree. Mr. Bullen also served on USU's board of trustees.

He married Kathryn Bowen in 1939 and they had five children.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, in the Lundstrom Park 3rd Ward chapel, 1260 N. 1600 East in Logan. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.allenmortuaries. net.

Reed Bullen served as a Utah State Senator for 22 years and held most of the leadership positions in the Senate. He passed away October 9th, 2005, just one month short of reaching his 99th birthday. His wife, Kathryn, died in 1990 so he has basically lived alone since that time. He served a rich full life and has had a tremendous impact on this valley and the state. He had 5 children all of whom have had successful lives. He began the radio business in Cache Valley in 1938 with the opening of KVNU radio. That was later expanded to bring in cable TV as well. With his retirement a number of years ago, these businesses were sold but are still doing well and continuing to serve the area. Reed also has served as a Bishop, the first Stake President of the USU Stake, which he helped to organize and he served in that position for 15 years. He later served as a Patriarch and President of the Logan Temple.

I worked closely with him in a number of ways but I thought two experiences tied in with politics should be shared. We once had a good discussion about campaigning for election and he told me that his way of campaigning was to print up small business cards with his name on the front and on the back that he was running for the State Senate. He gave them out as he went about his business and he never came close to losing. He had no lawn signs, radio or newspaper ads, mailers, or door hangers. He didn’t even go door to door. He said that people ran because they were well known in the community and campaign managers were not needed.

Several years ago, we were enjoying refreshments at a wedding reception and he turned to me and said: “Lyle, I am sure glad it is you serving now and not me.” He told me how he could not believe all the pressure and criticism we received in the press. He shared what their days were like while in session and things they did with their spare time. As we discussed the differences between his era and mine, we came to a conclusion about what has caused the stark contrast: Today we rely too much on government to solve our problems.

As co-chair of Executive Appropriations, I see it first hand as group after group comes to see me for more money. Their programs face growing demands; they can see how much more they could do if they had more money. In some cases the feds have cut off some of their funding and the program is in danger of being lost. Utah must make tough decisions because we are required to balance our budget. It really bothers me that the Federal Government has no such safeguard. Be it the war in Iraq, damages to the Gulf area, or even the massive Highway Bill, I wonder what the Congress would do if they had to actually fund each program with current money. What if they had to cut other programs to make money available or raise taxes? That is the only way government gets money to spend. I have often heard the saying, “Don’t tax me and don’t tax thee. Tax that fella behind the tree.”
As I watch what Congress is doing, I think they have found that fella behind the tree. It is our grandchildren who will have to pay for all this spending.
