Born September 25, 1904 in Marysvale, Utah to Garfield and Lucy Nay James. Married Herschel Keith Bullen on March 17, 1930 in Salt Lake City; later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He preceded her in death on December 12, 1987.Active member of the LDS Church having served as a Relief Society president, Primary teacher, and in many other capacities. She sang with the Singing Mothers, was a member of DUP, served as District Legislative Chairman for Utah Republican Party, and was a member and past-president of the Flora Culture Club. For several years she was in charge of the fashion show for the Salt Lake Tribune's Home & Garden Show. She served as a Pink Lady at the LDS Hospital for many years.

Survived by daughter, Betty Knight (James Nolan), West Valley City; two grandchildren, Paul Keith (Cindy) Knight, Jackson Hole, Wyo; and Kevin Nolan (Diana) Knight, St. Charles, Ill; four great-grandchildren, Jason, Richie, Andrea, and Gary; four sisters, Leola Pearson, Provo; Grace Utley, Salt Lake City; Garcia Walden, Cheyenne, Wyo; and Flora Gibbs, Salt Lake City; brother, Ronald James, St. George. Preceded in death by three brothers.

She enriched the lives of her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched.

Born February 19, 1914, the fourth of six brothers and sisters, to Leonard G. Hobbs Parkinson and Emma Chatterton Parkinson, her formative years were spent in Franklin, Idaho. She attended Logan High School and Utah State Agricultural College. While in high school she met and later married Thurlow H. "Tad" Bullen, her devoted husband of 59 years, who precedes her in death, April 11, 1997.

She loved her years as an "Aggie" at Utah State where she and Tad met many lifelong loyal friends, of whom Augusta Bullen (Phillip), Edith Ann Lloyd (Hon. Sherman P.), Veda Mae and Richard H. "Dick" Romney, Maridean Ryberg (Eric), and Evelyn Wakley (Ralph) survive her; they are preceded by Leroy "Toe" and Grace Anderson. They were an incomparable group of fast friends.

During the early years of their marriage, the couple worked for Union Pacific Railroad, living in Sun Valley, Idaho, where Tad was assistant manager and Virginia worked in accounting; Grand Canyon, Arizona, where he was general manager of the Lodge and facilities at North Rim; and Zion National Park, where he managed the Lodge. She lived for a period at the Escalante Hotel in Cedar City, Utah, which he managed and then while he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1948, they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where Tad was a restaurateur and club manager and Virginia was a wonderful mother, deeply devoted to her family.

She is survived by her son, Herschel Bullen, his wife Lora, and grandchildren, David Bullen, Jonathan Bullen, and Samuel Bullen, of Salt Lake City; son Thurlow P. "Tad" Bullen, his wife Holly, and granddaughter Anne Bullen, San Diego, CA; and grandson, Sebastian Clinger, Ashland, OR; and daughter, Kathleen Bullen Hoagland, her husband J. Anthony "Tony" Hoagland, Salt Lake City; and grandchildren, Heather Hoagland, San Diego, CA; and Danielle Hoagland, Seattle WA; Her sister Ruth Parkinson Ferguson, Salt Lake City; brother L. Spencer Parkinson, M.D., Logan; and a multitude of nieces, nephews and their children, survive her.

Even to her last days, like her father before her, Virginia retained her sense of humor and could be witty and quick. She was a proud and elegant presence at the Parklane Manor in Salt Lake City, where she enjoyed her later years. She could frequently be seen mingling with the residents, dressed to the nines, clutching her fashionable purse, wearing her ever-present high-heels, often donning a mink stole (regardless of season or heat). While at Parklane Manor, she received loving care, support and friendship from the management and staff, to whom the family extends its heartfelt gratitude and appreciation.

She was much beloved by all who knew her. She will be profoundly missed.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 25, 2002 at 11 a.m., at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, where friends may visit Thursday evening from 6 to 8, and one hour prior to services on Friday. Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery.
