George Washington Helme
Capt. George Washington Helme was born on May 18, 1822 at Kingston, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Oliver Helme and Sarah Pease. George married Margaret Appleby, daughter of Leonard Appleby and Ann Amanda Fitz Allen Van Wickle, on Oct 1, 1856 at Spotswood, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Capt. George Washington Helme died on Jan 13, 1893 at Helmetta, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at age 70. George was buried on Jan 16, 1893 at Jamesburg, Middlesex County, New Jersey.
He was also known as George Helmes. The George W. Helme Company of Helmetta, New Jersey, is not only anearly snuff manufacturing plant but one which over the years hasdeveloped into the world's largest producer of sweet snuff.Approximately one third of the dry snuff used in the United States ismade at Helmetta. The founder of the firm, George W. Helme, was bornat Kingston, not far from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on May 18, 1822.At the age of sixteen he was compelled to leave the public school, which he attended at Montrose, Pennsylvania (about 35 miles north ofKingston), because of the poverty of his parents, and go to work.
He obtained a clerkship with Asa Packer, who was a contractor for thebuilding of locks and boats for the transportation of coal fromPottsville, Pennsylvania, to New York and who projected and completedin 1855 the Lehigh Valley Railroad from Mauch Chunk to Easton. Heamassed a large fortune and founded and endowed Lehigh University in1866. The experience of working for Mr. Packer and observing hisbusiness methods was probably valuable training for young Helme inlater life. Becoming interested in literary matters, he resigned hisposition with Mr. Packer and traveled to Shreveport, Louisiana, wherehis brother lived, finally studying with a lawyer in that city andbeing admitted to the bar about 1851.

HELMETTA — After a two-month delay, the home of George W. Helme was finally demolished last week by Renaissance Properties of Englishtown, the developer currently constructing a 75-unit age-restricted community on the site.

The 17-room Victorian house on High Street dates back to the late 19th century. Helme was the owner of the snuff mill, for which the borough is best known beginning in the 1870s, and gave the borough its name, combining his last name with the nickname of his daughter, Etta. Helme died at the house in 1893. His wife, Margaret Appleby Helme, died there in 1923.

The home has been owned by the Leach family for more than 40 years.

Renaissance, whose development is called Regency Walk, purchased the property for approximately $2.5 million from another developer and agreed to build a new home near the mansion for Betty Leach and her son, Roger, the current owners.

Demolition of the historic building was slated for April, but was delayed so the Leaches’ new home could be constructed.

Historical Society President Kathryn Hackett-Fields said she and a handful of other society members were permitted to enter the mansion June 22 — less than a week before Renaissance razed the building, Hackett-Fields said.

"The developer told us not to say anything about the demolition," Hackett-Fields said. "They didn’t want a media circus. They also didn’t want anyone in there in case of injury."

Hackett-Fields said only a few individuals were permitted to tour the home June 22 and that they were given permission by the developer to remove historical items from the home; virtually nothing had been left for the taking.

"There were some handmade hearth tiles we were able to take," Hackett-Fields said. "The doors, moldings, everything was gone before we went in there."

Hackett-Fields said the few artifacts historical society members retrieved from the mansion will be placed in the borough’s museum, which is temporarily located in Borough Hall. The society hopes to find a permanent home for the museum in the future.

Hackett-Fields said she and other society members toured the mansion for approximately two hours, and she was surprised to see the interior of the home in such good condition.

"We [the historical society] were surprised the interior was in good shape," Hackett-Fields said. "The interior didn’t have gaping holes, but there was no telling what the attic looked like."

Hackett-Fields said that in her tenure over the past four years as president, she could not recall whether an engineering professional ever inspected the home’s interior to determine if the mansion could be restored.

"I don’t know where the estimate came from, but we [the historical society] were told the home could be restored for $350,000. We were always interested in getting the house restored."

The house was the most significant of the more than 100 buildings in the George W. Helme Snuff Mill District to be placed on the state and national Registers of Historic Places in 1980.

George W. Helme also built a mansion for his son, George A., but that building was demolished decades ago. The only Helme mansion that remains is the home of Helme’s eldest daughter, Antoinette "Etta" Helme Herbert. The house is still used as a private residence. on Jul 4, 2002.

George Washington Helme
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

George Washington Helme (b. 1822, Kingston, Pennsylvania), the founder of Helmetta, New Jersey, was the ninth child and fifth son of Major Oliver Helme (descendant of an old Rhode Island family begun by Christopher Helme) by his second wife Sarah Pease.

As a young man George Helme obtained a clerkship with Asa Packer, a wealthy contractor involved in the construction of locks, boats, and railroads for the transport of coal (and who eventually founded Lehigh University). In his mid-twenties, Helme resigned his position with Mr. Packer and moved to Louisiana, where his older brother Samuel was living. There he studied law and was admitted to the bar in New Orleans around 1851, subsequently establishing his own law practice, which he continued until the outbreak of the Civil War.

He returned north to marry Margaret Appleby in 1856 in Spotswood, New Jersey. Their first two children, daughters, were born before the Civil War. The first child, born in New Jersey in 1857, died a year later. Their second child was born in New Jersey in 1859. Their third child was born in Chatawa, Mississippi (about 100 miles north of New Orleans) in 1862, just after war broke out. Their last child, a son, was born after the war in 1866 in New Jersey.

Helme left his law practice and enlisted in the Confederate States Army on March 8, 1862 in New Orleans as a Captain in the Crescent Regiment, commanding Company G, Marion Rangers, nicknamed the Ruggles Guards. The regiment went immediately to Corinth, Mississippi, to reinforce General P. G. T. Beauregard’s army. On April 6, 1862 the regiment played an important role in the capture of two Federal divisions during the Battle of Shiloh. The regiment commander’s report of the engagement cited Captain Helme as “among the line officers I have great satisfaction in mentioning ... as distinguished for coolness, bravery, and the faithful discharge of their duty...” The regiment was disbanded on June 3, 1862 at the expiration of its 90 day enlistment, most of the men being transferred into the 18th Louisiana Regiment.

Captain Helme resigned on June 19, 1862, when he was transferred to the mining service of the Trans-Mississippi Department. This assignment may have been related to an act of April 11, 1862, establishing the “Niter and Mining Bureau”, which was charged with the securing of niter (saltpeter) for the manufacture of gunpowder, copper, lead, iron, coal, zinc, and other such materials as might be required for the prosecution of the war.

The Bureau opened new coalfields in North Carolina and Alabama and coordinated the flow of mineral fuel to Confederate naval stations along the coast. A corps of officers was established for this purpose. Captain Helme’s earlier experience back in Pennsylvania working for Asa Packer may have influenced this assignment. On June 9, 1864 another act was passed which increased the rank of the officers involved. There is nothing in the early Confederate records to indicate that Helme was anything other than a Captain, although later biographical sketches identify him as a Major General. (His son-in-law, Charles Godfrey Starter, identified him as a Major in a priviate family document printed in 1928.)

When the war ended, Helme returned north, to New Jersey and New York City, where he engaged in the real estate business for several years, acquiring considerable property.

In 1866 he formed a co-partnership with his brother-in-law Jacob Appleby, for the manufacture of snuff and tobacco. This lasted until 1877 or 1878, when Helme became the full owner of the enterprise, eventually renamed the George W. Helme Tobacco Company, and one of the largest snuff producers in the country. During the middle 1880s he purchased land between Spotswood and Jamesburg, New Jersey on which his mill and 105 homes for workers were built. This area, initially known as Railroad Mills, became Helmetta, New Jersey, and was reputedly named after his youngest daughter Oliva, whose nickname was Etta.

At the time of Helme's death Helmetta had a population of five hundred persons, and five factories employing over three hundred persons, many from Spotswood and Jamesburg. For ten years Helme was a member of the board of trustees of the State Reform School at Jamesburg and president of the board for eight years. His family was influential in establishing St. George’s Episcopal Church in Helmetta.

He died at in 1893 in Helmetta, aged 71. A special car of the Pennsylvania Railroad left Jersey City for the benefit of those wishing to attend the funeral services. The Camden Post (Camden, New Jersey) reported that 1,500 persons attended. The funeral procession of almost 500, some in horse-drawn carriages, some walking, made its way south to nearby Fernwood Cemetery in Jamesburg, where he was buried in the Helme Mausoleum, the largest in the cemetery, located on the highest point of ground. He was reported to have been the second wealthiest man in the state.[citation needed]

He was survived by his wife and three children. A grandson was painter Henry H. Starter.

Helmetta's man in first college football game
Herbert, son-in-law of town founder, recounted unique details of 1869 game
BY JOSEPH SAPIA Correspondent
After John Warne Herbert Jr. married into the Helme snuff mill family, he became a prominent Helmetta citizen.

But 16 years before marrying Olivia Antoinette "Etta" Helme, daughter of town founder George W. Helme and Margaret Appleby Helme, he had his own prominence. One, he was from the respected Herbert family of Wickatunk in Monmouth County. And, two, he was a member of the Rutgers University football team, the one that played Princeton University in the first collegiate football game 140 years ago, this week, on Nov. 6, 1869, at College Field in New Brunswick.

Years later, according to the website www.scarletknights.com, Herbert, a member of Rutgers' class of 1872, wrote:

"To appreciate this game to the full, you must know something of its background. The two colleges were, and still are, of course, about 20 miles apart. The rivalry between them was intense. For years, each had striven for possession of an old Revolutionary cannon, making night forays and lugging it back and forth time and again. Not long before the first football game, the canny Princetonians had settled this competition in their own favor by ignominiously sinking the gun in several feet of concrete. In addition to this, I regret to report, Princeton had beaten Rutgers in baseball by the harrowing score of 40-2. Rutgers longed for a chance to square things."

The circa-1880's mansion that once belonged to John Warne Herbert Jr. and his wife Olivia Antoinette "Etta" Helme is the last standing of Helmetta's three Helme mansions.

Onward to College Field, where about 100 spectators turned out. The Rutgers team, to distinguish itself from the bare-headed Princeton team, wore scarlet scarves turbanlike. Each team had 25 players at a time on the field in a game that was more rugby-like than today's football. A score was a "game," with 10 games ending the match.

"Though smaller on the average, the Rutgers players, as it developed, had ample speed and fine football sense,'' Herbert wrote. "Receiving the ball, our men formed a perfect interference around it and with short, skillful kicks and dribbles, drove it down the field. Taken by surprise, the Princeton men fought valiantly, but, in five minutes, we had gotten the ball through to our captains on the enemy's goal and S.G. Gano, '71, and G.R. Dixon, '73, neatly kicked it over. None thought of it, so far as I know, but we had without previous plan or thought evolved the play that became famous a few years later as 'the flying wedge.'"

Herbert recalled, "Next period Rutgers bucked, or received the ball, hoping to repeat the flying wedge. But the first time we formed it, Big Mike came charging full upon us. It was our turn for surprise. The Princeton battering ram made no attempt to reach the ball but, forerunner of the interference-breaking ends of today, threw himself into our mass play, bursting us apart, and bowing us over.

Time and again, Rutgers formed the wedge and charged; as often, Big Mike broke it up. And, finally on one of these incredible break-ups, a Princeton bulldog with a long accurate, perhaps lucky, kick, sent the ball between the posts for the second score.

"The flying wedge thus checkmated, Rutgers might have been in a bad spot had not Madison Ball, '73, come through. He had a trick of kicking the ball with his heel. All the game, he had been a puzzle to the Princetonians. The ball would be rolling toward the Rutgers goal, and, running ahead of it, instead of taking time to turn, he would heel it back. He made several such plays, greatly encouraging his team. Then, he capped all this by one tremendous lucky backward drive directly to Dixon, standing squarely before Princeton's goal. ... Dixon easily scored, giving us a onegoal lead. Big Mike again rose, however, in a berserk endeavor, and, getting the ball, he called the Princeton men into a flying wedge of their own and straight-away they took the ball right down the field and put it over."

"The fifth and sixth goals went to Rutgers. The stars of the latter period of play, in the memory of the players after the lapse of many years, were Big Mike and Large [former state Sen. George H. Large of Flemington, another Princeton player]. Someone by a random kick had driven the ball to one side, where it rolled against the fence and stopped. Large led the pursuit for the ball closely followed by Michael. They reached the fence on which students were perched, and unable to check their momentum, in a tremendous impact they struck it. The fence then gave way with a crash and over went the band of yelling students to the ground.

"Every college probably has the humorous tradition of some player who has scored against his own team. This tradition at Rutgers dated from this first game, for one of her players, whose identity is unknown, in the sixth period started to kick the ball between his own goal posts. The kick was blocked, but Princeton took advantage of the opportunity and soon made the goal. This turn of the game apparently disorganized Rutgers, for Princeton also scored the next goal after a few minutes of play, thus bringing the total up to four all."

Eventually, Herbert's team defeated Princeton, 6 to 4.

From "The Targum," the Rutgers newspaper:

"To describe the varying fortunes of the match, game by game, would be a waste of labor, for every game was like the one before," wrote the student reporter. "There was the same headlong running, wild shouting, and frantic kicking.

"In every game, the cool goaltenders saved the Rutgers goal half a dozen times; in every game, the heavy charger of the Princeton side overthrew everything he came in contact with; and in every game, just when the interest in one of those delightful rushes at the fence was culminating, the persecuted ball would fly for refuge into the next lot, and produce cessation of hostilities, until, after the invariable 'foul,' it was put in straight.

"To sum up, Princeton had the most muscle, but didn't kick very well and wanted organization. They evidently don't like to kick the ball on the ground. Our men, on the other hand, though comparativelyweak, ran well, and kicked well throughout. But their great point was the organization, for which great praise is due to the captain. The right men were always in the right place."

He was Chairman of the Republican County Committee of Monmouth for ten years and for sixteen years its treasurer; a delegate to the Republican National Conventions of 1872 and 1884; tendered the nomination for Congress In 1872, and in 1875 received the nomination for State Senator. He died April 10, 1899.

John Warne. his son, attended school at Old Brick Church School House, near Marlboro, where Vice President Garret A. Hobart was his preceptor for two terms. Later it was Mr. Herbert's privilege and pleasure as delegate to the Republican National Convention at St. Louis, in June, 1896, to take an active and potential part in the nomination of his teacher and warm personal friend for the Vice-Presidency of the United States.

Mr. Herbert attended school for four years at Glenwood Institute, Matawan. He entered the scientific department of Rutgers College In 1869. and at New Brunswick in November of that year, he participated in the first intercollegiate game of football ever played in this country - between Rutgers and Princeton. Beginning the practice of law at Jersey City in 1876, he soon had a lucrative practice. He was appointed a Master In Chancery in 1879, Special Master in Chancery in 1886. Though an ardent republican, Mr. Herbert has persistently refused to be a candidate for any public office, with the exception of Mayor of Helmetta, to which office he was elected 1890 and In which he served continuously to 1902.

Mr. Herbert abandoned the active practice of law in the Fall of 1889 to engage in the manufacturing business at Helmetta, where he remained until 1900. Major Gen. George W. Helme, his father-in-law, had established there one of the largest tobacco manufacturing plants In the country, and bad founded the town that grew up around it. Mr. Herbert had meanwhile become largely interested in trolley properties, and having acquired controlling interest in the old Niagara Central R. R., a steam railroad, running from Niagara Falls to St. Catharine, Ont., converted it into an electric railroad.
