      Ideal Cut Glass Company
Originally located in Corning, NY, (1903) the Ideal Cut Glass Company relocated to Canastota in 1905. William Hitchcock, who had once operated a jewelry store in the village, purchased the enterprise from its Corning founders, Luman Conover, Fred Johnson, and Charles Rose. The plant opened shop in the former Marvin Drill Company buildings on October 15, with 35 glass cutting stations known as "frames".
Glass pieces to be cut were known as "blanks" and included a variety of items, ranging from candlesticks and coffee sets to all sorts of stemware. These items usually arrived from Corning, Belgium, or Newark, Ohio, with the heavier pieces receiving heavier cuts ("heavy cut" glass) and the more delicate pieces receiving lighter cuts ("light cut" glass). The Star Flower Pattern, patented in 1913, remains the most popular of the 80 "heavy" designs put out by the company. This is commonly referred to as the "Diamond Poinsetta", and it was the most expensive pattern offered by the company.
With the conversion from gas to electric lighting, the company also found brief success in the production of lamps. A variety of designs were sold, including a lamp-aquarium.
Unfortunately, the Ideal Cut Glass Company was one of many industries unable to survive the Great Depression. The company filed for bankruptcy on March 14, 1933 and closed its doors by the end of that year.

S. Ray Conover, 58 years old, died Saturday morning at his home in Campbellsville, after having suffered a heart attack Friday afternoon. Mr. Conover was stricken while in the business section of Campbellsville. He was rushed to his residence and medical aid summoned, but he never rallied from the attack.

Mr. Conover, who was a well-known and prosperous citizen in this section, was born and reared near Montpelier, Adair County, being a son of the late J.K.P. Conover and Dorinda Conover. He married Miss Ada Feese of Cane Valley and they had one son, James Robert Conover, of Elizabethtown, who, together with his mother, survives.

Mr. and Mrs. Conover lived in Columbia for a number of years and their only child was born here. They built the residence now owned by Mrs. W.L. Fraser, on Jamestown St., before moving to Campbellsville about seventeen years ago.

The deceased is survived by three brothers and one sister: J.F. Conover, of Glensfork; Dr. P.H. Conover, of Harrodsburg; Joe Z. Conover, of Ann Arbor, Mich; and Mrs. N.H. Moss of Gradyville. He was a member of the Christian Church and owned valuable Campbellsville real estate.

Funeral services were held at the Campbellsville Christian Church at 1 p.m. Monday, conducted by Rev. E.P. Gast, assisted by Rev. H.J. Conover and Rev. L.E. Wartlow. The remains were brought to Columbia for burial in the City Cemetery
