The last will and testament of Joshua Townsend, deceased resident of Greenville Township near Woodington was filed yesterday with Probate Judge Younker for probate and record.

By the terms of the son of the testator, Enos B. Townsend is appointed executor and ordered to sell all personal property, real estate and government bonds, pay all just debts of the decedent and invest the remaining proceeds.

All of the interest from the estate is directed for the maintenance and support of the wife Samantha Eunice Townsend during her natural life.

Following her death the property remaining is to be devided equally among the four children, namely: Enos B. Townsend. Melvin Townsend, Ota Ann Lytle
and Hazel Townsend (Wright), Enos Townsend is made executor for the purpose of making the final settlement.

In case of any heir's death their children are to receive their portion.

The will was signed June 21, 1923 and witnessed by Chas. A. Wilt and Hazel R. Ream.

Aged Farmer Dies At City Hospital

Joshua Townsend well known Darke County farmer died at 7:50 this morrning at the City Hospital following a lingering illness. Mr Townsend was a sufferer
with gall stones and yellow jaundice. He was 73 years, 1 month and ten days old at the time of his death. The deceased was taken to the hospital the first of this week in a very serious condition. Mr. Townsend has been a life long resident of Darke County and has been a farmer all his life. He resided southeast of Woodington. He is survived by his wife Samantha Townsend, two sons and two daughters. Funeral services for the deceased will be conducted
by Rev. C. W. Woodington, one o'clock Sunday Hoeffer at the Christian Church in afternoon. Burial will be in the Greenville cemetery.

... Pelina Townsand, was born near Abbottsville, Darke Co, Ohio, May 26, 1850, and died in the Greenville Hospital July 6th 1923. Aged 73 yrs. 1 month and 10 days. He was one of two children and is survived by the brother Jonathon of Twin Bridge Montana. He was married to Samantha Smith over fifty years ago: five children were the result of this union one of whom preceded Father in death almost fifty years ago. Those who survive him are Mrs. Otie Lytle, of Arcanum Enas, of Weavers Station, Melvin, of Richmond Ind. and Miss Hazel of New York City.

After his marriage, they located on a farm one mile east of Woodington, where he remained up to the time of his death. His parents were Pioneers of Darke Co. and were widely and well known in an early day throughout the county. Mr. Townsand had a limb broken ten weeks befor his death from which his fatal illness resulted. He was very patient during his sickness and said he was ready to go and from the first said, he could not recover.

He was a kind husband, an indulgent father, and an obliging Neighbor and so far as known he hadn't an enemy in the world. He leaves an aged wife Two daughters, Two sons, one brother, two grandchildren and many other relatives and friends to mourn his departure.

The funeral services were held at the Christian Church in Woodington Sunday July 8th at one o'clock. Sermon by Rev. C.W. Heoffer, of Palestine. The body was buried in the Greenville Cemetary.

DEWITT CLINTON WILLIAMS, who resides in section 22, township 33, range 25, in Shawnee township, is one of the most prosperous agriculturists of Cherokee County. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, August 1, 1841, and is a son of Rev. Joel and Sarah Jane (Swords) Williams, and a grandson of Joel
Williams.

The Williams family is of Scotish-Irish extraction. Joel Williams was a native of Pennsylvania, and in early life had quite a reputation as an Indian fighter. He moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he conducted the first hotel, and became a man of wealth and prominence in the young city.

Rev. Joel Williams was born in Pennsylvania, and when a small boy accompanied his parents to Cincinnati, Ohio, when that place was little more than a steamboat landing, and the inhabitants frequently found it necessary to seek shelter from the Indians in a block house. When Joel was 16 years old his father died, leaving a large estate, his share of which was a farm of 300 acres and $10,000 in money. He secured a good education, and after graduating from Oxford College, edited a paper in Steubenville, Ohio, for awhile. He later engaged in mercantile business and being obliged to leave the affairs of the concern to the care of his partners, much of his fortune disappeared through their mismanagement. He was always a very religious man, and shortly after his marriage was ordained a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and became an itinerant preacher. In the fall of 1841, he settled upon the land in Clinton County which he had inherited, and in the meantime kept a store near the town of Sabina, Ohio. He did not remain long in the Methodist Church, but soon became a preacher in the United Brethren Church. He removed to Williamsburg in 1852, and remained there until his death in 1856, continuing to preach until the last. He was joined in marriage with Sarah Jane Swords, daughter of Kinsey Swords, a native of Steubenville, and a turner by trade. The following named children blessed this union: Charlotte I., deceased, who was the wife of William Rosser; Kinsey Swords, who died as a result of wounds received at the battle of
Peach Tree Creek, near Atlanta, Georgia; DeWitt Clinton; Joel Harris, of Rockford, Minnesota; .Ann Eliza, second wife of William Rosser; Granville Franklin, of Bloomington, Ohio; and Emma Jane, wife of John A. Johnson, who lives near Sabina, Ohio. Mrs. Williams was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church from the time she was 11 years of age. She died in 1867, aged 54 years.

Owing to the loss of his father's fortune, DeWitt C. Williams received a very meagre education in the common schools. At an early age he went to work in the chair factory at Williamsburg, and when 20 years old became apprenticed to the trade of tile and pottery making. He continued at this work for about eight years, but found it did not agree with his health. He then moved West to Carrollton, Missouri, where he stayed one winter, and was married April 1, 1869. On the night of his marriage he started with his bride for Kansas. That year he took a homestead in Salina County, where he farmed for 18 years. He greatly improved his farm, and sold it to good advantage. He served for a time on the School Board and as justice of the peace, while living there. In 1886 he came to Cherokee County and until 1894 rented and farmed different places. In that year he bought a tract of 80 acres, and by dint of hard work and good management has increased his holdings to 547 acres in Shawnee township. He makes a specialty of hay raising and cuts about 400 tons, being the largest hay producer in the county. His reputation as such is extensive, and he is sometimes called "Hay" Williams, letters freuently being thus addressed to him. He also has about 90 acres in corn and 70 in oats, and uses most of his grain for feed.He has 12 head of horses and 40 head of cattle. In business affairs he has displayed unusual ability. He is an untiring worker, and the success he has attained is due to his individual efforts.

On May 2, 1864, Mr. Williams enlisted in Company A, 154th Reg., Ohio Vol. Inf., and was honorably discharged September 1, 1864. On April 1, 1869, Mr. Williams was united in marriage with Nancy A. Nevius, a daughter of William Nevius, a native of Indiana. To them have been born 10 children, as follows: Clement F; Mary Malvina, who died at the age of 16 years; Jacob B; Benjamin N; Lutetia S., wife of J. Holmes Lucas, of Shawnee township; Sarah Jane; Ralph Waldo; Lottie E; Ruth E; and Olive Alberta, who was burned to death in April, 1900, at the age of six years. Of the living children, Mrs. Lucas is the only one not at home. Politically, the subject of this sketch is a stanch Republican, he has been a member of the School Board many years and at the present time is a director.

      Iva Olive Householder was born on Aug 22, 1868 at Ansonia, Darke County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Lewis Riley Householder and Perlina Nevius. Iva married John Alfred Patterson on Apr 6, 1892 at Greenville, Darke County, Ohio. Iva Olive Householder died on Jan 7, 1953 at El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, at age 84. Iva was buried on Jan 11, 1953 at Sunset Lawns Cemetery, El Dorado, Butler County, Kansas.
     She resided at at Kansas in 1937.

      Edward Ebberly Householder was born on Aug 22, 1870 at Greenville, Darke County, Ohio. He was the son of Lewis Riley Householder and Perlina Nevius. Edward Ebberly Householder died on Jul 23, 1892 at age 21.

      Lucy Grace Householder was born on Sep 27, 1871 at Ansonia, Darke County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Lewis Riley Householder and Perlina Nevius. Lucy married John Longcrick on Dec 24, 1893.

Samantha E. Townsend, 71, Passes Away Rather Suddenly

Mrs. Samantha E. Townsend, wife of Joshua Townsend died rather suddenly at 5:30 'clock Monday morning at her residence 401 Euclid Avenue. She was aged 71 years, 9 months, and 13 days. Though in poor health for some time, Mrs. Townsend's death is a sudden and severe shock to her many friends. Her sad demise came just a little more than a week following the death of her older sister, Mrs. Sarah North who passed away last Saturday a week ago.

The deceased is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Frank Lytle of Arcanum, Miss Hazel Townsend of New York City and three sisters Mrs. Coleman Smith and Ruth Lecklider of Greenville and Julia Bolten of Winona Lake, Indiana.

Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. C. W. Hoeffer at Woodington Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in the Greenville Cemetery.

Benjamin married Cora C Bland on Jul 10, 1925 at Alamosa, Alamosa County, Colorado. Benjamin Nash Williams died on Apr 16, 1967 at age 91.
