Owen "Haled" from Troy, NY. Born 23 July 1843. Enlisted in First NY Mounted Rifles in Oct. 1861, and quickly rose to Sgt. Major in only six months before being mustered out. Re-enrolled in the same regiment (as a private) in Aug. 1862; appointed Sgt. Major, 7th NY Cavalry, Apr. 1863. Accepted commission as Second Lt. a month later. Saw action in various engagements in the Virginia theater; brevetted as Captain, USV.

While living in Denver Hale accepted appointment as First Lt. Seventh Cavalry at formation of regiment. Brevetted Capt. and Major, USA 17 Jan 1869 Served in Washita campaign. It was Hale to whom Maj. Elliott reportedly remarked: "Here goes for a brevet or a coffin" before pursuing a band of fleeing Indians which ended in Elliott's death. Hale accompanied Custer and Sheridan in locating the corpses of Elliott's detachment.

Brevetted Capt. and Major, USA, 17 Jan 1869; appointed Capt. 7th Cav. 1 Mar 1869. Participated in Yellowstone Expedition 1873. On detached service, recruiting and not with regiment at LBH. Served in Nez Perce War where he was KIA at Snake Creek, MT 30 Sept. 1877.

As for the nickname "Holy" Owen; I am not sure. Hammer mentions he never married. A footnote in Greene's _Nez Perce Summer_ mentions something about Hale, after predicting his death, asking another officer to return a charm that a lady had given him. Greene states the death prediction did not occur. At any rate Hale did indeed die that day.

Perhaps Hale was rather of high moral fiber; don't know whether he drank or not. Another guess: could it be he was a virgin?

That morning Hale made the prophetic remark to the effect of "have I got to be killed on such a cold day" H.

EUGENE VAN VOORHIS.

Eugene Van Voorhis, attorney at law and a son of the Hon. John Van Voorhis, for a half century a practitioner at the bar of Rochester and one of the most distinguished lawyers and statesmen of New York, was born in Rochester on the 11th of March, 1864. At the usual age he entered the public schools, passing through successive grades and eventually graduating from the University of Rochester in 1885 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Hp began the study of law with his father and after thorough preliminary reading was admitted to the bar in October, 1887. He has since engaged in the practice of his profession, joining his father and Quincy Van Voorhis as a member of the firm of J. & Q. Van Voorhis. Later he was a member of the firm of John Van Voorhis & Sons and is still associated in practice with his brother Charles Van Voorhis. He was fortunate in that he entered upon his professional work as the associate of one so distinguished as the Hon. John Van Voorhis and yet in no calling is success so largely dependent upon individual merit and ability. Keen analytical power, strong mentality, clear discernment and ripe judgment combined with unfaltering industry—these are the concomitants which insure success in the arduous and difficult profession of the law. and they constitute the qualities which have made Eugene Van Voorhis a prominent practitioner of Rochester. He is now president of the Monroe County Bar Association, which indicates his standing with the profession, and he is a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Society, of the Genesee Valley Club, the Holland Society of New York and the New York State Bar Association.

On the 18th of February, 1896, Mr. Van Voorhis was married to Miss Allis M. Sherman, a daughter of John Sherman of Washington, I). C. They have one son, John Van Voorhis. In social circles of Rochester they are prominent and Eugene Van Voorhis is widely and favorably known in his native city aside from his professional interests. His course is such as reflects credit upon an honored family name and his practice, which is an important one, is the measure of his recognized legal ability.

Mrs. Van Voorhis was born in Rochester and for much of her life worked for environmental, cultural and social causes. She was the widow of John Van Voorhis, an associate judge of the New York State Court of Appeals from 1953 until his retirement in 1967. He died in 1983. Mrs. Van Voorhis is survived by two daughters, Emily Harris of Rochester, Minn., and Allis D'Amanda of Irondequoit; a son, Eugene, of suburban Webster, N.Y; 13 grandchildren, and 7 great-grand.
