      Burness Abbott Stanford was born on Dec 5, 1877 at Kandiyohi, Kankiyohi County, Minnesota. He was the son of Thomas W. Stanford and Elizabeth Abbott. Burness married Maude Lauretta Ray, daughter of Millard F. Ray and Carrie Belle Wyncoop, on Jul 1, 1905 at Boissevain, Manitoba, Canada. Burness Abbott Stanford died on Dec 21, 1925 at Yakima, Yakima County, Washington, at age 48. Burness was buried at Tahoma Cemetery, Yakima, Yakima County, Washington.
      Burness attended college in Minnesota, however I don't know what years. After marrying Maude Ray, July 1, 1905 they resided in Manitoba, Canada. Family members recall that they were told to leave Boissevain, and never to return. None of the remaining family remember why. The kids remember talk of a "cat House" when they lived there. However, when the kids went to see the "cats", there were none to be found! Possibly the reason for their removal from the area.Family remembers living a short time in Perth, North Dakota. While there, Burness hunted and fished mainly in the Carpenter Lake area for any food to feed his family. Maude got her teaching certificate in the Carpenter Lake School district. It is unknown if she actually taught there or not. Out of 12 children born to Maude and Burness, only six lived. My Uncles Don and Ken recall my dad saying to them after Don was born,"I am glad you (Don) lived, I was tired of burying babies in the back yard." Then, around 1920, Burness moved his family west, and lived a few years in Sunburst, Toole County, Montana. Burness was a painter by trade, and work was very scarce. They moved from Montana to Yakima, Yakima Washington in the summer of 1925. It is reported that they worked picking fruit and vegetables until Burness could find steady work painting. In December, 1925, only about 5 months after arriving in Yakima, Burness, the only child of Thomas Stanford and Elizabeth Abbott, died of a skull fracture when he fell from a scaffold while painting the interior of the Yakima Hotel. Infection set in, and he refused to go to a doctor. It seems that he and his son Manuel were the only two from the family to be living together at the hotel in Yakima at the time. Reports from family members claim that Burness and Maude "agreed to dis-agree." This leads one to suspect that the marriage was becoming unstable and Divorce was imminent. Burness was reportedly not on very good terms with his parents as they dissapproved of his wife Maude. He lived in Minnesota, North Dakota, Manitoba, Canada, Montana and Washington.

      Bernice Wenonah Stanford was born on Jun 22, 1906 at Dunseith, Rolette County, North Dakota. She was the daughter of Burness Abbott Stanford and Maude Lauretta Ray. Bernice was buried on Mar 28, 1980 at Cypress Lawn Memoria, Everett, Snohomish County, Washington. She died on Mar 26, 1982 at Everett, Snohomish County, Washington, at age 75.
      Bernice's first husband was ? Hayes. It is unknown when or where they were married, however, they had a set of twins born in Yakima, Washington, Sept. 1926. The first born was a girl, Bernice Josephine. The second was a boy, named Burness Joseph. Reports were that both were sick, and wouldn't eat. Ultimately, Burness died on 4 Sept. 1926, and Bernice died 5 Sept. 1926. They were buried on 7 Sept. 1926 at Tahoma Cemetary in Yakima, in close proximity to their grandfather, Burness.
Bernice married a second time in 1944 to David Warner. This event occcurred in Seattle, King County, Washington. Together they had one daughter, Diana Sharon Ramona, in 1946. Reports from family say that Bernice suffered from a gradual onset of Paranoid Schizophrenia, or Bi-Polar disease. Apparently she had numerous stays at either Northern State Hospital in Snohomish County Washington, or at Western State Hospital in Tacoma, Pierce County Washington. Her disease apparently got progressively worse with each hospital stay until she became mostly reclusive to all of her family.

      Dorothy Sheila Stanford was born on Oct 26, 1907 at Dunseith, Rolette County, North Dakota. She was the daughter of Burness Abbott Stanford and Maude Lauretta Ray. Dorothy married Jesse Clayton Byrum on Dec 18, 1926 at Wallace, Shoshone County, Idaho. Dorothy Sheila Stanford died on Dec 23, 1982 at Everett, Snohomish County, Washington, at age 75. Dorothy was buried on Dec 27, 1982 at Cypress Lawn Memoria, Everett, Snohomish County, Washington.

      Rudolph Worthington Stanford was born on Mar 5, 1910 at Dunseith, Rolette County, North Dakota. He was the son of Burness Abbott Stanford and Maude Lauretta Ray. Rudolph Worthington Stanford died on Oct 18, 1979 at Renton, King County, Washington, at age 69.
      Rudy was a Templer for Boeing. He also served in the National Guard. He married Margaret Smith in King County Washington. They had two sons, Robert (nicknamed Beaver) born ?, and Rollin Wesley (nicknamed Fox) born 3 Jan. 1947. Both were born in Seattle. At one time, he was part owner of The Jungle Tavern, with his brothers Manuel (Stan) and Don. His wife, Margaret, also worked there as a bar maid. The tavern was located in downtown Seattle, on Pike Street? According to family, this business relationship was not a very healthy one. I seemed that the profits were always "short". The partnership only lasted a year or two. It seems that Rudy had also borrowed money from other family members. These debts were never paid back.
Rudy was creamated, and his remains are at Greenwood Memorial Park, in Renton, Washington.

      Manuel Rupert Stanford was born on Mar 26, 1911 at Dunseith, Rolette County, North Dakota. He was the son of Burness Abbott Stanford and Maude Lauretta Ray. Manuel married June Irene Miller, daughter of Clarence Woodard Miller and Oline Kristine Bruland, on Apr 6, 1952 at Seattle, King County, Washington. Manuel Rupert Stanford died on Apr 18, 1975 at Zenith, King County, Washington, at age 64.

      Kenneth Ray Stanford was born on Dec 8, 1908 at Dunseith, Rolette County, North Dakota. He was the son of Burness Abbott Stanford and Maude Lauretta Ray. Kenneth married an unknown person ; Ken today, is the only surviving child of Burness and Maude Stanford. He can remember as a child, his two brothers, Manuel and Don, were "farmed out" as they called it then, to a neighboring farmer, to work on his farm. This was commonly done as a means for the children to "earn" their keep as well as help support the rest of the family. Ken recalled that his mother, Maude, would come and take all of the money they made. He and his other two brothers never saw a dime of their earnings. He recalled that his other brothers were very bitter about what their mother did with their money, and consequently were very bitter. Ken said he never felt bitter-and was mad about it for only a short time. He had accepted the fact that that was "the way it was" back then. After moving to Seattle, Ken worked as a Warehouseman. He also worked as a Engineer for boat and shore repair. He served in the U.S. Army, in WW 2. He married Florence Rayne on 14 Aug. 1945 in Seattle, King County, Washington. Together they had two children, Kitty Laura born 28 May, 1947 and Kenneth Charles, born 6 Nov. 1951.

      June Irene Miller was born on Mar 21, 1923 at Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington. She was the daughter of Clarence Woodard Miller and Oline Kristine Bruland. June married Manuel Rupert Stanford, son of Burness Abbott Stanford and Maude Lauretta Ray, on Apr 6, 1952 at Seattle, King County, Washington. June Irene Miller died on Jan 4, 2002 at Buckley, Pierce County, Washington, at age 78.

      Donald Clayton Byrum was born on Aug 17, 1931 at Seattle, King County, Washington. He was the son of Jesse Clayton Byrum and Dorothy Sheila Stanford.

      Donald Alan Stanford was born on Sep 25, 1916 at Rolla, Rolette County, North Dakota. He was the son of Burness Abbott Stanford and Maude Lauretta Ray. Donald Alan Stanford died on Jul 18, 2002 at Seattle, King County, Washington, at age 85.
      Donald (Sarge) was a 1936 graduate of Broadway High School in Seattle. He served in the Army and fought in WW 2. He worked 25 years for the Seattle School District as a custodian. Previous marriages were #1 Silvia Jones and #2 Virginia Beggs. He married Patricia Lynn on 23 Dec. 1948 in Wenatchee, Chelan County, Washington. They were married 53 years at the time of his death. Of Burness and Maudes children, Don seemed to be the most bitter about the way the kids were treated by their mother. He traveled a lot after his dad died. Moving from Washington to California, to Idaho and back to Montana. He even worked for a time with the Circus. Anything to make money. Transcripts from his wife, Pat tell a story of a fascinated young man upon his moving to Seattle. It was a larger city than Yakima and he recalled the city lights of the "big city." I was fortunate to be able to sit with Don, Pat and their daughter, Sue, in March of 2002. After 40 years, we were able to reminisse and openly reflect on some of the things that happened during my childhood. Don was an avid hunter-deer and duck. Don had a very sharp mind and remembered a lot of his childhood.

      Charles Ernest Yates was born on May 5, 1854 at Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois. He was the son of John Putman Yates and Cloe Ann Josephine Henry. Charles Ernest Yates died on Mar 5, 1871 at Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois, at age 16; killed by an injury from a schoolmate.
      Charles was stabbed and killed one night at a "singing-school" in Sonora by Alfred Logan. Both were "boys" and were associates at the school. Alfred Logan was tried and convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was pardoned several years later by the governor. Information from Gregg's History of Hancock Co, Page 978.
