He was not only a very able, energetic and in telligent man in his own business and in his performance of civic duty, but was exceptionally broad minded, just and conscientious.
He always attended his party's national convention Was mentioned as a Candidate for the Presidency of the United States.

He will be rememberd for his long fight with trade unions on the principal of the boycott, he successfully won an injunction against the AF L's do not Patronize action, so enraging Samuel Gompers that he and two of his officers were sentenced to contemp of court prison terms when he ignored the court continuing the boycott. On appeal it was upheld by the Supreme Court of the US, but it was never served since James Wallace died in 1910. And the board of directors arranged a settlement.

Manufacturer. Born in Marion County, Kentucky, he joined the Confederate Army at the age of thirteen. He took part in the battle of Perryville in 1862. Afterwards, he was under the command of famous Southern cavalry officer General John H. Morgan until the end of the war.

He then began his business career in Louisville, Kentucky when he joined the noted stove manufacturing firm of J. S. Lithgow & Company. In 1888 he moved to St. Louis and entered the firm of Buck's Stove & Range Company. He became the Vice President and then the General Manager of the firm, then President and Majority stockholder. He gained National prominence serving 3 terms as the President of the National Association of Manufacturers.

He is remembered for his long fight spending time and personal fortune ultimately his health in his belief that violence should play no role in Labor Relations and taking his difference of opinion to the Supreme Court when Buck's Stove & Range company was boycotted by the fledgling AF of L. Samuel Gompers vs the Buck's Stove & Range Company.

He died after a short illness in 1910.
