Col. John Conklin Bull was born on Mar 11, 1788 at Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York; John Conklin Bull is buried in Kimball Cemetery, Liberty Township, Porter Co., Indiana, in section C6. John's gravestone indicates he died on 9 May 1871 at the age of 83, which implies that John was born 1788. Other sources have indicated that John may have been born in 1785 or 1789, but that would conflict with the date of death and age given on his gravestone. The John C. Bull Bible record appears to indicate that John was born in 1789, as does information provided on family group sheets prepared by Dorothy (Miller) Glanz and Bertha (Wohlenberg) Stalbaum. The Glanz data also suggests that John C. Bull was born in Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut. The 1900 and 1910 Federal Census data for Liberty Township, Porter Co., Indiana, lists that Lydia Ophelia (Bull) Hughart-Crook's father, who was John Conklin Bull, was born in New York. He was born on Mar 11, 1789 at Dutchess County, New York. He was the son of Horace Bull and Sally Conklin. John married Catherine Storm Hasbrouck, daughter of Benjamin Hasbrouck and Rachel Storm, on Dec 26, 1812 at Dutch Reformed Church, Hopewell, Dutchess County, New York. Col. John Conklin Bull died on May 9, 1871 at at his daughter Lydia's home, Liberty Twp., Porter County, Indiana, at age 82. John was buried at Kimball Cemetery, Liberty Twp., Porter County, Indiana.
W.A. Goodspeed's book 'Counties of Porter and Lake: Historical and Geographical, Illustrated,' published in 1882, includes mention of John Conklin Bull as deputy postmaster of Portersville (now Valparaiso), Porter Co., Indiana. On page 122 of the book is written: 'The first Postmaster of Portersville was Benjamin McCarty, and for a time John C. Bull was his Deputy. There was some dissatisfaction, growing out of the fact that McCarty did not reside in the village, and in 1839 T. A. Campbell was appointed. During his term, the office was kept in the southeast corner of the court house, and behind that Mr. Campbell kept bachelor's hall. He was at the same time Deputy Clerk of the Court for George W. Turner.' He and Catherine Storm Hasbrouck removed to at Liberty Twp., Porter County, Indiana, In approximately 1850, John C. Hall, at her home near Crisman, Porter county, Ind., at four o'clock Sunday afternoon, Feb. 2nd, 1890, of lung fever. Her remains were laid at rest in the McCool cemetery, the Rev. Hall officiating. Mrs. Mary Wicks Hall was born near Utica, N. Y., May 22d, 1816, making her at the time of her death 73 years, 7 months, and 10 days old. On Dec. 24, 1827, she was married to Benjamin Bull, who died March 5th, 1864. In 1865 she was married to Burril D. Hall, with whom she lived up to the time of her death. By her first husband she had two children; Emily, the wife of David Hugart, and Edwin, who died in Deerfield, Chickasaw county, Iowa, some years since. Mrs. Hugart alone survives her. To know her was to love her, and all that loving hands could do to keep her with us a little longer only proved the weakness of human skill when once the dreaded summons had been issued. Her virtues were many, her faults were few. She loved the good and beautiful. She was ever ready to help those who were deserving of help, and never left pity to predominate. Her modest virtuous and unassuming life has been an object lesson to a host of friends who will live better lives from having known her. The afflicted husband and daughter have the sympathy of a large circle of friends, but do not mourn alone. [Note: The year of Mary's marriage to Benjamin Bull should be listed as 1837 and not 1827.]

BULL. -- In December last, at North Marshall, Calhoun county, Michigan, of cancer, William A. Bull is the 60th year of his age. Mr. Bull was a brother of Mrs. George Longshore and formerly a resident of Twenty Mile Prairie. He removed from there to Michigan about ten years ago, leaving a large number of friends and relatives here. He was the father of eight children and the first of the family to be taken by the hand of death. As a family they cherished strong affections for one-another, and during the long and painful illness preceding his death, everything was done that loving hands could do to mitigate his suffering. On the fourth day of the following February the stricken family were called to the death bed of Marion Eaton, daughter of the above, who died of consumption, leaving a husband and a son eight years old. Though father and daughter so near together Have past the cold tide of death's dark flowing river, Weep not! give not vent to misgiving, Mourn not for the deed, but weep for the living. Be thankful to God that your dear ones are gone To the mansions prepared round His glorified throne. They have gone from this earth to the regions above There to sing evermore of God's goodness and love.

GEORGE W. BULL. Many of the ablest men in America are ardent devotees of the great basic industry of agriculture, and it is well that this is so because the various learned professions are rapidly becoming so crowded with inefficient practitioners that in a few years it will be practically impossible for any but the exceptionally talented man to make good or even to make a competent living therein. The independent farmer who, in addition to tilling the soil, cultivates his mind and retains his health, is a man much to be envied in these days of strenuous bustle and nervous energy. He lives his life as he chooses and is always safe from financial ravages and other troubles of the so-called 'cliff-dweller.' An able and representative agriculturist who has done much to advance progress and conserve prosperity in Porter county, Indiana, is George W. Bull, who owns and operates the Moss Lake dairy farm in Liberty township. A native of Liberty township, Porter county, Indiana, George W. Bull was born July 12, 1856, and he is a son of Theodore and Anna M. (Keeler) Bull, the former of whom was born in Onondaga county, New York, and the latter of whom was born in Sandusky county, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Bull came with their respective parents to Porter county, Indiana, as children, and here grew up and were married. In 1858 they located on a farm in section 36, Liberty township, where they continued to reside during the remainder of their lives. He died in 1891 and she passed to the life eternal in 1904. They were the parents of five boys and three girls, five whom are living, in 1912, namely: George W., whose name forms the caption for this review; Miles 0., who is married and resides on a farm in Kansas; Charles A., a resident of Washington township, Porter county; Olive, who is the wife of Charles A. Campbell, of Valparaiso; and Mary, who is the wife of William Sclimell, of Liberty township. Theodore Bull and his wife were devout members of the Christian church, and in his political allegiance he was a stalwart supporter of the principles and policies for which the Republican party stands sponsor. He was deeply and sincerely interested in community affairs and ever gave freely of his aid and influence to support such measures and enterprises as were calculated to benefit humanity. George W. Bull grew up on the old homestead farm, in the work and management of which he early began to assist his father. He attended the district schools during the winter terms and during the summer seasons worked upon the farm. From his eighteenth to his twenty-seventh year he worked for his father for wages and after his marriage, in 1883, he began to farm on his own account, locating on his present beautiful estate just across the road from the parental homestead. Mr. Bull's place is known as the Moss Lake Farm and he makes a specialty of stock-raising and dairy work. The Farm consists of eighty acres and is recognized as one of the finest little estates in the county. In politics he is an independent. In November, 1883, was solemnized the marriage of Mr. Bull to Miss Elma E. Skinner, who was born in Porter county, Indiana, in 1861, and who is a daughter of Stephen L. Skinner, of Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Bull have eight children, whose names are here entered in repective order of birth: John C. was graduated in the district schools an is farming on his own account in Liberty township, this county; Ollie is the wife of Edward Esserman, of Liberty township; Clara is the wife of Truman Lenberg and they reside at La Porte; Ruth, Mabel, and Edith all were graduated in the common schools and reside at hom, as do also Bertha and Ethel. The latter is a student in the high school at Valparaiso.

GEORGE W.

The Vidette-Times, Munster, Lake Co., Indiana, on December 8, 1998 [Pages A-1 and A-6]: Stalbaum recalled as historical authority Funeral services Wednesday for former curator, lifelong resident. BY JOHN REED Times Staff Writer VALPARAISO -- Porter County native Bertha Stalbaum, who played a major role in perserving Porter County history, including the Old Jail Museum and the Memorial Opera House, died Sunday at the age of 82. She was curator of the Old Jail Museum, 153 S. Franklin St., for more than 25 years in the 1970s and 80s and was Porter County Historian. She had been a member and officer of the Porter County Historical Society most of her life. Her efforts weren't limited to history. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Valparaiso Women's Club, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Heritage Lutheran Church, the Northern Indiana Historical Power Association and the Indiana Historical Society. 'She knew so very much about everything and everyone. She always had an answer for everyone who came into the museum. She is going to be very sorely missed,' Bonnie Cuson said. Cuson said she knew Mrs. Stalbaum since she was a young girl, and had worked with her at the museum before becoming curator herself a few years ago. 'She was as much a part of our history as any of those treasures in the museum. She was the person everybody went to when they wanted to know about our history. She put history first and realized the importance of our history to our future,' said Phyliss Brandy, president of Historical Preservation of Porter County. Jane Fryer, Cuson's mother and secretary of the Historical Society, also knew Mrs. Stalbaum for many years. 'She was one of the most outstanding people we have had in Valparaiso. She has been a very influential person. She took the museum from the third floor of the courthouse to the Old Jail. She, and her husband Trevor, have made that museum what it is,' Fryer said. 'She was the backbone of the Historical Society. I admired her for all her background. She knew just about everything that could be known about Porter County,' said Alan Loomis, Historical Society President. Mayor David Butterfield said he knew of Mrs. Stalbaum's fascination with history from his days as a Valparaiso schoolboy. 'I worked with her for many, many years. She did a lot for the community, and she will be missed.' Butterfield worked with her on restoration at City Hall, and said she was instrumental in getting the 1916 Sauk Trail historical plaque saved when the Carnegie Library was being remodeled. Last summer, she unveiled the plaque when it was re-dedicated in a ceremony at City Hall. Her family came to Porter County in the early 1800s, and she was born to Fred and Edith Wohlenberg near Cooks Corners on May 28, 1916. Friends said she was related to, or had close ties to, most of the early families which settled the area. She was a graduate of the former Liberty Township high School. On Feb. 27, 1936, she married Trevor Stalbaum in a ceremony performed by the Reverend Henry Braun of Chesterton Methodist Church at her parents home on Moss Lake. She and Trevor lived at 951 West St., and their home is the site of an old Civil War campground. A plaque honoring the Ninth Infantry marks the site. Joan Lane, DAR Regent, said Mrs. Stalbaum's mother also was a DAR member. 'She held many offices, was involved in many activities, and was Regent from 1976-1979,' Lane said. Mrs. Stalbaum joined the DAR in 1962 and also was active in many of the organization's national scholarship activities. 'She loved history. She got us involved when they were collecting money to preserve the Memorial Opera House, and was instrumental in saving the Sauk Trail plaque,' Lane said. Mrs. Stalbaum is survived by her husband, Trevor. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary in March. Also surviving are a son, Earl Stalbaum, of Columbia, S.C; and a daughter, Edith DeMass of Valparaiso, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace W. Wohlenberg, and a granddaughter, Lorelei Demass Klahn. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Heritage Lutheran Church, the Rev. Joe Ostafinski officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, at Moeller Funeral Home.
