      John Gardner Cortelyou was born on Jan 13, 1849 at Harlingen, Somerset County, New Jersey. He was the son of James Garretson Cortelyou and Cornelia Polhemus. John married Mary Van Zandt, daughter of James Van Zandt and Catherine 242 Nevius, on Oct 20, 1869 at Blawenburg, Somerset County, New Jersey. John Gardner Cortelyou died on Jul 8, 1901 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, at age 52. John was buried at Hollywood Cemetery, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.
     

John Gardner began life on a farm not far from Princeton, N. J. In due time he became a student at Rutgers College, New Brunswick, where he joined Delta Upsilon, a social fraternity. But before graduation time would have arrived he married and settled down as a farmer at Harlingen. At one time he was Clerk of the Board of Freeholders of Somerset County. He was one of the first farmers in this section to
buy the new contraption, the self-binder.
In 1884, he removed to Ewing, Nebraska, where he engaged in the banking business, the firm name being "Cortelyou, Ege and Van Zandt."
On March 21, 1887, he sold his 121.57 acre farm at Harlingen, "be-ginning at a stone in the middle of the road leading from the Harlingen road to the mountain, also being corner of James W. Gulick, running thence along Gulick's line south", etc. Consideration was $6,224.38 or $51.20 an acre. Signed : J. Gardner Cortelyou. In later years he regularly signed his name "John G. Cortelyou."
In the early fall of 1890 he sold his interests in Ewing and removed to Omaha. Here he became cashier of the Dime Sayings Bank. The general depression and the collapse of the Omaha boom swept away this bank and some others in the city. Mr. Cortelyou now entered the real estate and inyestment field. When the inventor of a rotary duplicator brought his crude model from Stella, Nebraska, to Omaha, John
Cor telyou, who had, along with business sense, an aptitude in mechanical lines, bought a half-interest in the invention. He helped to develop the machine and to bring it to the commanding position it now occupies in its field.He was also a prime mover in the group which established the Methodist Hospital of Omaha, one of the largest and best hospitals of that city.
John Gardner Cortelyou and his wife were members of the Reformed Dutch Church at Harlingen, N. J., he having joined by confession in January, 1865, and his wife by letter in 1870. He was a deacon in this church from 1873 to 1875 and clerk during the same years. On December 15, 1885, he and his wife were dismissed to the Methodist Church at Ewing, Nebr., the only church in that frontier village at the time.
After removal to Omaha in 1890, he became treasurer of the First Methodist Church of that city. It was through his efforts, largely, that their fine building, which had just been completed but was not entirely paid for, was saved to the congregation in those days of financial distress.
John G. Cortelyou died in Los Angeles, California, while on a visit there. He, his wife, and their sons Willis and Raymond are buried in Hollywood Cemetery, at Los Angeles.

Mary married John Gardner Cortelyou, son of James Garretson Cortelyou and Cornelia Polhemus, on Oct 20, 1869 at Blawenburg, Somerset County, New Jersey. Mary Van Zandt died on Jul 7, 1911 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, at age 63. Mary was buried at Hollywood Cemetery, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.

      Luther Cortelyou was born on Dec 23, 1851 at Harlingen, Somerset County, New Jersey. He was the son of James Garretson Cortelyou and Cornelia Polhemus. Luther married Gertrude Farmer Stelle, daughter of Peter Taylor Stelle and Sarah Eleanor Stelle, on Nov 14, 1877 at New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Luther married Alice T. Sharp, daughter of Joseph D. Sharp and Elizabeth Cawood, on Feb 19, 1907 at Helena, Andrew County, Missouri. Luther Cortelyou died on Apr 25, 1938 at Muscotah, Atchison County, Kansas, at age 86. Luther was buried at Muscotah, Atchison County, Kansas.
     He resided at at Harlingen, Somerset County, New Jersey, between 1851 and 1868. He resided at at New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey, between Apr, 1868 and 1878. He removed to at Talbot County, Maryland, circa May, 1878. He removed to at Muscotah, Atchison County, Kansas, in Oct, 1889.

In Muscotah he was a grain dealer for many years. He was one of the organizers of the Kansas Grain Dealers Association and served as its President for five years. He became second vice-president and later first vice-president of the National Grain Dealers Association. He sold his elevator in 1907 and in 1911 organized the Farmers State Bank of Muscotah of which he became President.

      Gertrude Farmer Stelle was born on Mar 19, 1857 at Raritan Landing, Somerset County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Peter Taylor Stelle and Sarah Eleanor Stelle. Gertrude married Luther Cortelyou, son of James Garretson Cortelyou and Cornelia Polhemus, on Nov 14, 1877 at New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Gertrude Farmer Stelle died on Feb 5, 1905 at Muscotah, Atchison County, Kansas, at age 47. Gertrude was buried at Muscotah, Atchison County, Kansas.

      Alice T. Sharp was born on Aug 20, 1862 at Highland, Kansas. She was the daughter of Joseph D. Sharp and Elizabeth Cawood. Alice married Daniel W. Mooney on Sep 1, 1881. Alice married James Henry Calvert on Dec 18, 1886. Alice married Luther Cortelyou, son of James Garretson Cortelyou and Cornelia Polhemus, on Feb 19, 1907 at Helena, Andrew County, Missouri. Alice T. Sharp died on Mar 23, 1939 at Rochelle, Ogle County, Illinois, at age 76. Alice was buried at Muscotah, Atchison County, Kansas.

      Peter J. Cortelyou was born on May 25, 1857 at Harlingen, Somerset County, New Jersey. He was the son of James Garretson Cortelyou and Cornelia Polhemus. Peter married Jennie V. Dumont, daughter of Abraham Dumont and Mary Elizabeth Potter, on Nov 17, 1880. Peter married Florence Sally Todd, daughter of John Wesley Todd and Lydia Patton, on Dec 21, 1887 at Preston, Caroline County, Maryland. Peter J. Cortelyou died on Apr 13, 1902 at Corning, Nemaha County, Kansas, at age 44. Peter was buried at Atchison, Atchison County, Kansas.

      Jennie V. Dumont was born on Oct 17, 1860. She was the daughter of Abraham Dumont and Mary Elizabeth Potter. Jennie married Peter J. Cortelyou, son of James Garretson Cortelyou and Cornelia Polhemus, on Nov 17, 1880. Jennie V. Dumont died on Dec 24, 1884 at age 24. Jennie was buried at North Branch, Somerset County, New Jersey.

      Helen Augusta Cortelyou was born on Oct 18, 1862 at Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of John A. Cortelyou and Sarah DuBois. Helen Augusta Cortelyou was baptized on Nov 4, 1863 at Dutch Reformed Church, Six Mile Run, Somerset County, New Jersey. She died on Mar 6, 1864 at Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey, at age 1.

      Louis Van Zandt Cortelyou was born on May 27, 1879 at Harlingen, Somerset County, New Jersey. He was the son of John Gardner Cortelyou and Mary Van Zandt. Louis married Fay Pulliam, daughter of Andrew Monte Pulliam and Lulu Barnes, on Feb 14, 1907 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. Louis Van Zandt Cortelyou died on May 26, 1952 at Los Angeles County, California, at age 72.

Spencer married Ruth Powers Messinger, daughter of Charles Bingley Messinger and Mary Powers, on Jun 24, 1909 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. Spencer Van Zandt Cortelyou died on Aug 9, 1962 at Los Angeles County, California, at age 81.
      He resided at at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.

He received his degree, B. S. in Civil Engineering, from the University of Nebraska in June, 1902. During his four-year course he had been a member of the "varsity" football, basketball, and baseball teams. He took post-graduate work in the fall of 1902 and played his fifth season on the U. of N. football team, a perfectly legal procedure in those days.
From July, 1903 to December, 1907, he was in the Philippines with the Insular Government as surveyor, supervisor of Pampamga Province, district engineer of the 4th district and later of the 11th and 12th districts, and in 1907 as Acting First Assistant Director of Public Works of Manila. The next year he was engaged in private engineering work in the Imperial Valley and in Los Angeles. The following three years he was with the Los Angeles County Highway Commission, as chief of party, chief surveyor, and assistant chief engineer. Since February, 1912, he has been with the California Division of Highways. He was assistant district engineer until 1922, and since 1922 has been district engineer of the Los Angeles district.
Spencer V. Cortelyou originated and has carried through at least three notable engineering projects in the Los Angeles district, as noted below :
1. Just north of Santa Monica canyon the ocean had already washed away most of the beach (prior to 1934) and at high tide the breakers were menacing the existing highway. The following is made up of extracts from an article in the Los Angeles Times of March 18, 1934.
"Twenty months ago the pounding waves of high tide were washing up against and cutting under the highway there, the famous Coast Highway. There wasn't a vestige of beach along all that 3333-foot stretch of State-owned shore line.
"The State is proud of that highway, knows its tremendous value. S. V. Cortelyou, State Highway District Engineer, wanted to save the road but he didn't defy Old Man Ocean; he just gave him a hint, an affable engineering tip.
Engineer Cortelyou had five staunch barriers-their technical name is groins-built out 200 feet seaward from the shore, each groin 500 feet apart from its neighbor groins.
"Old Man Ocean couldn't batter those groins to bits-they're made of interlocking sheet-steel piling. So very obligingly and steadily he began piling sand against them-a million times more sand than there is rice in China. And presto !-there has appeared that fine new beach, a veritable gift from Old Man Ocean, who still is extending the beach width, a remarkable demonstration, one of the foremost on record, of what can be done to increase beach space along many a mile of the Los Angeles costal line.
"The entire cost of those groins was only about $30,000. The value of the new strand is inestimable."
2. The second project is described in the January, 1938, issue of Southern California Business. Some extracts from that article follow.
"From all over the country, and the globe, engineers come to California to study what is declared to be the world's finest mountain high-way and the busiest.
"This is the Ridge Route Alternate, leading from the San Joaquin Valley down into Los Angeles, over which a constant stream of produce comes to this great consuming center. Reciprocally, a constant stream of Los Angeles products goes up into the Valley.
"This new route was born in the mind of a Los Angeles engineer, who envolved the plan, supervised the construction, and even found the necessary money."
Back in 1912, when funds of the first state highway bonds became available, two routes to connect the San Joaquin Valley with Southern California were under consideration. The first, following the Southern Pacific railway eastward, could be constructed with ease. The other, known as the ridge route, would be more difficult to construct and costlier but would be fifty miles shorter. The commissioners decided upon the second, and the two-lane road was constructed. Over this one could travel by car between Los Angeles and Bakersfield in much shorter time than the fastest passenger trains running between the two cities required.
"But though improvements were constantly made on this road with the passing years, great increase of traffic required a new and better road along another route.
"At that point, the plans for the Ridge Route Alternate were developed in the mind of S. V. Cortelyou, district engineer of the State Highway Commission.
"Construction was begun, and completed in the fall of 1933, and this section of highway will long stand as a monument to the engineering ability of Mr. Cortelyou. It is probably the finest piece of mountain highway ever constructed."
According to a survey made by the U. S. Bureau of Public Roads several years ago, the Ridge Route Alternate is the heaviest freight traffic highway in the western half of the United States. It lies within Los Angeles County between Gorham and Castaic.
The new route is nearly ten miles shorter than the old and has only seven percent as much curvature as the old. Its highest elevation is 684 feet lower than that of the old route. Its minimum radius of curvature is 1000 feet while the old route had a 70-foot minimum. Its total rise is 3450 feet compared with a 4630-foot total rise on the old route. The new route has adverse grade of 1040 feet compared with 2220 feet of adverse grade on the old. And the width of its roadbed is 38 feet while the width of the roadbed on the old route was 21 to 24 feet.
The total cost of the Ridge Route Alternate-26.85 miles in length-was $2,900,000. The annual saving in the cost of operation of vehicles on the new route as compared with the old is computed at $1,369,000. The total annual saving capitalized at 5 percent is $27,380,000, or nine and one-half times the cost of the Ridge Route Alternate.
3. The third project referred to is treated somewhat humorously in a Los Angeles paper published about January 1, 1941, as follows:
"S. V. Cortelyou's baby put on long pants yesterday. At least that might be one way of looking at it. Anyway, the Arroyo Seco Parkway opened with a lot of ribbon-cutting and one thing and another. And the Arroyo Seco Parkway definitely was and is the baby of S. V. Cortelyou, district engineer of the State Highway Department and as fine a gentleman as ever studied a blueprint. Mr. Cortelyou had stayed up nights with the parkway, given it soothing syrup, changed its diapers, fed it with a baby spoon, coddled it, prayed over it and battled for it. He had fought bottle-necks, legal barriers and railroad crossings, tried to placate irate ladies, combated rose-petal dinners of lobbyists in Sacramento, campaigned in local elections and done everything but the Highland Fling to make the parkway project go through. . . . And so at last after years of struggle he saw it come true-a divided-lane, intersectionless, high-speed, straightway connecting link between down-town Los Angeles (or at least the Figueroa Street tunnels) and the foot of Broadway in Pasadena, running smack dab up the Arroyo Seco of song and story."

      Ruth Powers Messinger was born on Oct 18, 1889 at Pomona, Los Angeles County, California. She was the daughter of Charles Bingley Messinger and Mary Powers. Ruth married Spencer Van Zandt Cortelyou, son of John Gardner Cortelyou and Mary Van Zandt, on Jun 24, 1909 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. Ruth Powers Messinger died on Apr 5, 1983 at Los Angeles County, California, at age 93.

      Willis A. Cortelyou was born on Jan 3, 1883. He was the son of John Gardner Cortelyou and Mary Van Zandt. Willis A. Cortelyou died on Mar 28, 1902 at San Pbablo, Laguna Province, Philippines, at age 19.
     He was also known as William A. Cortelyou. He seved in the troop M., 6th U.S. Cavalry during the Boxer Campaign.

      Raymond Cortelyou was born on Apr 30, 1885 at Ewing, Holt County, Nebraska. He was the son of John Gardner Cortelyou and Mary Van Zandt. Raymond Cortelyou died on May 30, 1893 at Omaha, Nebraska, at age 8.

      Herman Polhemus Cortelyou was born on Oct 9, 1887 at Ewing, Holt County, Nebraska. He was the son of John Gardner Cortelyou and Mary Van Zandt. Herman married Mabel Renee Taylor, daughter of Carl Ethiel Taylor and Eleanor Martha Robertson, on Sep 2, 1911 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. Herman Polhemus Cortelyou died on Jun 29, 1979 at Los Angeles County, California, at age 91.

      Mabel Renee Taylor was born on Feb 8, 1888 at Taylor County, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Carl Ethiel Taylor and Eleanor Martha Robertson. Mabel married Herman Polhemus Cortelyou, son of John Gardner Cortelyou and Mary Van Zandt, on Sep 2, 1911 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. Mabel Renee Taylor died on Jul 15, 1970 at Los Angeles County, California, at age 82.

     Peter married Sarah Eleanor Stelle.

     Sarah married Peter Taylor Stelle.

     Joseph married Elizabeth Cawood.

     Elizabeth married Joseph D. Sharp.

     Daniel married Alice T. Sharp, daughter of Joseph D. Sharp and Elizabeth Cawood, on Sep 1, 1881. Daniel W. Mooney died on Nov 23, 1886 at Muscotah, Atchison County, Kansas.

     James married Alice T. Sharp, daughter of Joseph D. Sharp and Elizabeth Cawood, on Dec 18, 1886. James Henry Calvert died on Nov 23, 1904 at Muscotah, Atchison County, Kansas.

      Luther Cortelyou was born on May 23, 1881 at Longwoods, Talbot County, Maryland. He was the son of Luther Cortelyou and Gertrude Farmer Stelle. Luther married Lola Edith Allison, daughter of Webster Clay Allison and Irene Alexander, on Oct 3, 1914 at Muscotah, Atchison County, Kansas. Luther Cortelyou died in Nov, 1965 at Parsons, Labette County, Kansas, at age 84.
     He resided at at Talbot County, Maryland, between Oct 1, 1881 and 1889. He resided at at Muscotah, Atchison County, Kansas, between 1889 and 1902. He removed to at Parsons, Labette County, Kansas, in 1902.

      Lola Edith Allison was born on Mar 21, 1882 at Muscotah, Atchison County, Kansas. She was the daughter of Webster Clay Allison and Irene Alexander. Lola married Luther Cortelyou, son of Luther Cortelyou and Gertrude Farmer Stelle, on Oct 3, 1914 at Muscotah, Atchison County, Kansas.

      Stelle Cortelyou was born on Jul 21, 1883. He was the son of Luther Cortelyou and Gertrude Farmer Stelle. Stelle Cortelyou died on Jul 28, 1905 at Panama Canal Zone at age 22; while in government service. Stelle was buried at Muscotah, Atchison County, Kansas.

      Peter James Cortelyou was born on Jun 25, 1885 at Talbot County, Maryland. He was the son of Luther Cortelyou and Gertrude Farmer Stelle. Peter married Thelma Hoyt Stolp, daughter of Walter Jay Stolp and Mary Elizabeth Buchanan, on Jul 19, 1941 at Gardnrville, Douglas County, Nevada. Peter James Cortelyou died on Jul 9, 1962 at San Francisco County, California, at age 77.
     He resided at at Oakdale, Stanislaus County, California.

      Thelma Hoyt Stolp was born on Dec 15, 1896 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. She was the daughter of Walter Jay Stolp and Mary Elizabeth Buchanan. Thelma married Peter James Cortelyou, son of Luther Cortelyou and Gertrude Farmer Stelle, on Jul 19, 1941 at Gardnrville, Douglas County, Nevada. Thelma Hoyt Stolp died on Dec 15, 1986 at San Joaquin County, California, at age 90.

      Frank Morgan Cortelyou was born on Oct 29, 1886 at Longwoods, Talbot County, Maryland. He was the son of Luther Cortelyou and Gertrude Farmer Stelle. Frank married Mary Eileen Burney, daughter of Herschel Porter Burney and Nannie McKee, on Jan 8, 1914 at Green Forest, Carroll County, Arkansas. Frank Morgan Cortelyou died in May, 1976 at Columbia, Boone County, Missouri, at age 89.
     

Frank Morgan Cortelyou acquired his engineering theory at the University of Kansas, where he was granted the B. S. in C. E. degree in 1908. He is a construction engineer, interested especially in bridge construction. He was with Waddell and Harrington, engineers, Kansas City, Mo., for eight years, with Harrington, Howard and Ash for twelve years, and in 1930 was member of the firm Harrington and Cortelyou, consulting engineers.
He was chief draftsman, 1918 to 1924, and assistant engineer, 1920 to 1928. He was resident engineer in charge of construction of the bridge over the Arkansas River at Van Buren, Arkansas; of the bridge over the Columbia River at Portland, Oregon; of the structure over the San Francisco Bay, which cost $2,000,000; and of the bridge over the Mississippi River at Vicksurg.

      Mary Eileen Burney was born on Dec 8, 1887 at Green Forest, Carroll County, Arkansas. She was the daughter of Herschel Porter Burney and Nannie McKee. Mary married Frank Morgan Cortelyou, son of Luther Cortelyou and Gertrude Farmer Stelle, on Jan 8, 1914 at Green Forest, Carroll County, Arkansas.

     John married Lydia Patton.

     Lydia married John Wesley Todd.

      Robert Jarrell was born circa 1850 at Maryland. Robert married Florence Sally Todd, daughter of John Wesley Todd and Lydia Patton.

      (Unknown) Cortelyou was born. (Unknown) Cortelyou was the child of Peter J. Cortelyou and Jennie V. Dumont.

      Leon DuMont Cortelyou was born on Dec 12, 1889 at Cordova, Talbot County, Maryland. He was the son of Peter J. Cortelyou and Florence Sally Todd. Leon DuMont Cortelyou died on Jun 1, 1890.

      John Wilbur Cortelyou was born on Sep 18, 1891 at Cordova, Talbot County, Maryland. He was the son of Peter J. Cortelyou and Florence Sally Todd. John married Lola Mitchell on Dec 16, 1933 at Manhattan, New York County, New York.
      John Wilbur Cortelyou resided at at Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, in 1935.

Mildred Emma Short died in Apr, 1983 at Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, at age 85.
