Another Civil War Veteran Answers The Final Roll Call. Falls From the Thinned and Fast Vanishing Ranks of Veterans.
Daniel W. Austin, the civil war veteran and well known and highly esteemed citizen, after a brief but painful illness passed to the final rest - answered the roll call that comes to each and every one upon this earth, Thursday morning.
A week since, at this writing, his many friends were cheered over the fact that he was impoving and that there was bright prospect for his recovery, but it was not to be. There came a change for the worse that neither the tender care he received nor the skill of his physicians could check.
Mr. Austin was born at Rochester, New York, January 20, 1841; came with his parents to Adams County, Illinois when a child two years old.
He was married to Miss Maria J. Hewitt April 17, 1861, and removed to Chariton county, this state, in 1885, where he successfully engaged in farming until he became a citizen of Brookfield 17 years ago, where he has since made his home. His wife died March 8, 1912.
He is survived by three daughters - Mrs. Letty Trimble and Mrs. Ada Martin, residents of the state of California, and Mrs. Maggie Seals, of Meadville; four sons John, of Mendon, Ills., and Prescott, Frank and Ed, of Brookfield, all of whom, with two brothers, Cornelius and William, of Mendon, Illinois, were with him as his days in this world drew to a close. A cousin -- Harvey Chittenden, of Mendon -- also came to bid farewell to his kinsman.
Loyal to his country and his country's flag during all his life, he answered the call to the colors made by the great president by enlisting in Company K, 118th Illinois Infantry Volunteers, August 25, 1861, in which command he served with the exception of a time as orderly connected with the staff of General U. S. Grant, until December, 1865, a service of more that 50 months.
The funeral will be from the home, 1003 main street, today, Saturday at 2 o'clock, p. m., the service conducted by Rev. D. M. Trout, pasteor of Park Baptist church.
Brookfield Gazette, Brookfield, Linn County, Missouri, June 19, 1920
Last Sad Rites
The large attendance and wealth of floral offerings at the funeral of Daniel W. Austin from the home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock showed the high esteem in which he was held by his comrades and by his fellow citizens.
The service at the home, was, as announced last week, conducted by Rev. D. M. Trout, pastor of the Park Baptist church.
Pallbearers were F. M. Lomax,P. J. McNamara, F. O. Kelley, R. J. Lambert, Walter Brownlee and Charles Tooey.
Homorary pallbearers and escort were civil war veterans W. T. Kimber, F. A. Hawkins, George B. Miller, J. R. Ramsay, Ed T. Brott, Levi Miles, J. J. Hendricks, W. D. Clark, J. S. Neiman, J. V. Martin and Geo. W. Martin.
The service at the cemetery was the ritual service of the Grand Army of the Republic conducted by the local Grand Army post; of which Mr. Austin became a member March 14, 1909.
And the wailing notes of the bugle have sounded "lights out" for another comrade who will be sadly missed.

Thomas Hamilton
M, #421328, b. Jan 18, 1752, d. Nov 18, 1829
Thomas Hamilton was born on Jan 18, 1752 at Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Thomas married Sarah Westfall circa 1773 at Pennsylvania. Thomas married Lydia Colburn, daughter of John Colborn and Sarah Hoagland, after 1785 at Pennsylvania. Thomas Hamilton died on Nov 18, 1829 at Lansing, Tompkins County, New York, at age 77. Thomas was buried at Lansing, Tompkins County, New York.
Thomas Hamilton was first married to Sarah Westfall(Westvael) and they had five children. They lived in Hardwick Twp, Sussex Co (now Warren Co) NJ where they were neighbors to Joseph and Lydia Colborn Brearly. Sarah Westfeal was baptised in Smithfield, PA, but her family moved to Knowlton, NJ, near Hardwick. Thomas and Sarah moved to Muncie Creek, Northumberland/Lycoming County, PA, Sarah was drowned on October 15, 1785 while crossing the Swatara River, which is just south of Harrisburg, PA. At the same time Joseph Brearly was drowned, and Thomas Hamilton married his widow, Lydia Colburn Brearly, and had six more children.
Thomas, Jr was enlisted in the Tenth PA Line, which combined with the Eleventh was stationed at Fort Augusta in 1779. They participated in the famous Sullivan's Expedition up into what is now the Tompkins County area of NY state to destroy Indian villages and crops. "It is probable that Thomas, seeing the beauties and agricultural possibilities of the area while on this expedition later decided to locate there." It is interesting to note that the 1789 original settlers in the Tompkins County area were from Kingston, NY where Sarah Westvael's grandfather's family was from.
In 1800 Thomas and Lydia moved to Lansing, Tompkins County, NY where they are both buried in a family burying ground. At least eight of the Hamilton children settled in NY state, several in Caroline Township, which was Tompkins, then became Tioga County.
Thomas Hamilton had a son Jonathan and there is a good possibility that he is the Jonathan Hamilton who lived in Caroline township and had a son Ira who were farmers there, then the next generation, Frank, moved to Iowa in the 1870's, where he too was a farmer.
