Obit: C. B. Austin Buried Monday - The community was deeply saddened on Friday morning when word of the condition of Clarence Austin flew from mouth to mouth. On the verge of a nervous break-down, Clarence B. Austin turned a gun on himself Friday morning and died a few hours later in Blessing hospital. Despondency over his ill-health had been increasing and he was planning to take a complete rest. Miss Carrie Austin, his sister, was making all preparations for a motor trip and planned to start this Tuesday morning. At 6:00 the bread truck stopped and Mr. Austin took in the bread and about 6:45 Frederick Austin and Joe Long entered the store and found him bleeding profusely from the charge of a 22-rifle. Miss Carrie Austin came in to talk over the details of their trip and found Frederick desperately calling for medical aid. Mr Austin was rushed to the hospital where ex-rays were taken and every effort made to save him. He died about 10 o'clock, having never regained consciousness. The ex-rays showed the charge split three ways and fractured the skull. Clarence B., son of Cornelius and Mariette S. Bent Austin, was born on a farm, which he owns, north of Mendon on Dec. 28, 1883 and passed away at the Blessing hospital in Quincy on Friday morning, July 14, 1933, a few minutes after 10 o'clock. He was united in marriage to Mabel Kincaid, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Kincaid of Ellington, in December 1906. To this union were born three children, Frederick, Harlan and Edith. Mr. Austin enlisted in the regular army at the close of the Spanish-American War and served for some time in the Philippine Islands. He was a member of the Congregational Church and until recently had been a member of the Eagles lodge in Quincy. Mr. and Mrs. Austin moved to Mendon about seven years ago. He was manager of the Herr Foood Store for about three months, then purchasing the store now the Mendon Food Market. Surviving are the widow and three children; one sister, Miss Carrie E. Austin all of Mendon. Other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at the home of his sister at 2:15 o'clock and at the Congregational church at 2:30, conducted by Rev. O. E. Spencer. "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "Abide With Me" were sung by Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Bogart. The pall bearers were: Ross McNay, Lester Long, C. A. Casey, H. T. Smith, I. M. Brumback, and Albert Gay Burial was in the local cemetery amid a profusion of flowers..

1. Index of Awards on Claims of the Soldiers of the War of 1812 page 19 No.: 5,531 NAME OF APPLICANT.: Austin, Moses, RESIDENCE OF APPLICANT.: Lyons, Wayne County, New York, AMOUNT ALLOWED.: 65 00 2. The following is a copy of a document sent to me by Jean Austin Dreckmeier, a great granddaughter of Cornelius Austin, the middle son of John Colburn Austin. Items in parens are mine, to clarify who and where, otherwise it is as sent to me. This is what Judy Austin Wartick (Jean's younger sister) says of the deed of Moses Austin to land near Nauvoo (Hancock County, Illinois). It composed of 160 acres given to him as a bounty because he served in the War Of 1812. It appears that this document transfers ownership from Moses and Ann Austin (Moses' second wife, Ann Charlock Seward) to his son John C. Austin. The best we can tell this property is now where the Nauvoo-Colusa high School is situated plus land to the north and east. I have no proof that Moses was ever in Illinois, so I can assume that John C. and Caroline E. Barclay Austin were the settlers there. The deed itself is a handwritten copy made in 1860 of the original made in 1842. It is among the papers loaned to me by Mrs. Mildred Austin Myers (granddaughter of William Barclay Austin, youngest son of John Colburn Austin). Phoenix, Arizona.
The deed follows:
