James McPike was born on May 25, 1805 at Henry County, Kentucky. He was the son of Edward McPike and Sarah Van Cleave. James married Zerelda Sudduth, daughter of James Sudduth, on Apr 12, 1827 at Henry County, Kentucky. James married Mary Chilton, daughter of George Chilton and Mary Ellen Ball, on Dec 7, 1837 at Henry County, Kentucky. James McPike died on Sep 16, 1878 at Fabius, Marion County, Missouri, at age 73.

James McPike was born in KY, (1805) and married a Suddith. He was her father's executor, giving freedom to slave Mary and dividing up the estate according to will. Mrs. [Suddith] McPike died & James remarried.

The family & all the other McPikes from Henry Co, KY. traveled in 1838 up to Palmyra, MO where the free frontier land was being granted at the US land office.

The slaves built James' red brick mansion in 1858, which is still occupied, by the daughter of Dudly McPike and her husband, Mr. Jones. This is where the graves of James & Mary [2nd wife] are located. It's on high ground on the fork of 2 creeks.

I have James' 2' x 3' oil portrait, but there exists an identical one & one of Mary, back in MO. There are various family stories about James buying the 1st steam tractor & being a hard, industrious worker. No time for talk, gotta get to work. His Bro Aaron McPike, founded Vandalia, MO, trading his MO State Fair winning race horse for a few hundred acres [now Vandalia] and being on the Board of the Hannibal - St Joseph RR, re-routed the track thru his land. My Gr Gr Grandfather, Judge William F. McPike, resided with Bro Aaron, and then returned to Marion Co, MO. WF was one of James' sons. One of WF's sons is James B. [Benjamin after some Indian fighter Uncle, Benjamin Haden] McPike. At 21, went to med college in Keokuk, IA, and matriculated in 1879. I have his large sheepskin diploma.

Many civil war stories, including how James co-signed a $5,000 bond to seek the release of a young man destined for the union firing squad. All the others got executed. This is called the "Palmyra Massacre." The gravest atrocity of the civil war according to the London Times. You can locate this historical story on the net.

According to MO legislative pen notes, James was elected to the MO state legislature from 1871 to 1873, along with CSA Gen. Shields of the same area.

James ran mules to the confederates and went all the way to MISS to pick up another son, who was severely wounded fighting for the CSA. This was around the end of the war in '65. This son changed his name to Jefferson Davis McPike, and reportedly took 8 lead balls in his left arm, shoulder & chest. Lived in pain until his death.

My cousin CG McPike, became trustee of his Uncle CG's trust and totally remodeled WF's mansion. Ripped out all the lath & plaster, re-wired it [home first got power in 1942 under some federal program] and made it a beautiful mansion. Of course the slave quarters in the back had been separated, but he added an access. I'd seen it before, & during rehab, & after it was finished. Beautiful work. Every person who died there was laid out in the parlor. I have a pic of WF in his coffin who died at age 89 ! This was in 1922. His son, Doc Jim died in 1935 & is buried in Palmyra Cemetary in town. His wife Susan [Holt] came out here & had a stroke & died within 2 years & is buried out here, but Docs name is on the marker. WF is buried in Emerson Cemetary, along with many other McPikes. They established the Emerson Baptist Church in about 1848, & the cemetary.
