M. PHILIPS VAN MATER, 80, of MARLBORO, died Thursday, May 5, at home. He was a lifelong resident of Marlboro, having been born on the Van Mater homestead, Joceda Farms. Mr. Van Mater was very active in the community and served for 61 years as a member of the Marlboro Volunteer Fire Company with 37 years as treasurer; Cub Scout leader for Troop 86; served as deacon on the Consistory of the Old Brick Church in Marlboro; member of the Monmouth County Board of Agriculture; served on the Monmouth County Board of Education; served as chairman of the Board of Directors for the local Agway; served as chairman of Marlboro Township Zoning Board of Adjustment; was a delegate with "People to People," visiting the former Soviet Union touring farms and agricultural sites as well as Moscow and the Ukraine. Mr. Van Mater was a partner in Joceda Farms Inc.
He was predeceased by his first wife of 42 years, Carolyn Sinclaire Van Mater, in 1986; and a brother, Pierre D. Van Mater Jr. Surviving are his loving wife of the past 18 years, Joan; a son, Douglas S. Van Mater of Yardley, Pa; two daughters, Carol Van Mater-Miner of Belle Mead, and Dia Michaud of Walden, Vt; a stepson, Eric Svendsen of Newton; a brother, Joseph H. Van Mater of Marlboro; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Calling hours are private. A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday at the Old Brick Reformed Church, Route 520, Marlboro. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter, 400 Morris Ave., Suite 251, Denville, NJ 07834.
