JAMES LAKE BIRTH: Harlingen DRC , 25 Dec 1768 "Cobus to Cobus Leck and Arreate". NOTE: This is the second son of Jacobus Lake who is named Jacobus or James. Per the bible records of Dinah Lake Heath found in the "Pennsylvania Mag. Hist & Biog"., v. 31 #1, Jan 1907, pg 118, "Lake-Leak-Heath Bible, 1721-75" the first son of this name is recorded as "James Leak".b. 2 May 1745. His baptismal record of 2 Jun 1745 is found at the New Brunswick DRC, "Jacobis" to Jacobis Lake and Stinje". (Christina Stryker was Jacobus Lake's first wife.) It is assumed that the first son, James has died prior to the birth of "Cobus" Lake in 1768 since only one son named "James" is mentioned in Jacobus Sr.'s will. DEATH: Arreantie Lake wrote in her will 8 Feb 1812 that her son James Lake was deceased. Arreantie names "Sarah Lake and Katharine Lake, daughters of James". It would appear that this son, James is the same James Lake who died intestate and whose estate was appraised 26 Oct 1809, -- "inventory... of James Lake, late of the township of South Brunswick, County of Middlesex." Susannah Lake and Ralph Sansberry were administrators of the estate. MARR: c1790, probably Susannah Couvenhoven. Susannah and James are probably the parents of "Caty" and "David Counhoven" whose baptismal records are found in the Harlingen DRC records: "b. 5 Apr 1796, bp 24 Jul, Caty to Jas. Lake and Susannah Covenhoven", and "bp 26 Feb 1801, David Counhoven to James Lake and Susan Couenhoven". David Covenhoven Lake probably died young as he is not named in Arreantie's will. I have no information about Susannah. From what you have found in the census, I would agree that it does indeed look like Susanna married a Stout. I do not have access to the NJ Will books but according to the index at Ancestry.com, there are probate records in Somerset Co. for: John Stout, 2459R. W. 1833, Inv. 1833 John W. Stout 2138R. W.1827, Inv. 1827 Susanna Stout, 3351R. W.1852, Inv 1852 Perhaps one of these may be for the correct John and/or Susannah. If you are near a library that has these will books, it may give more information.

George Griggs was born in Mesilla, New Mexico on May 2, 1866. His father, James Edgar Griggs, had come from New Jersey to Fort Filmore, New Mexico. The elder Griggs' ventures in mining and mercantile establishment led him to settle in Mesilla, where he married Eugenia Ascarate, a daughter of Cristobal Ascarate, a member of one of the most prominent Mexican families in the territory. After finishing his formal education at St. Regis College in Denver, Colorado, George Griggs migrated to Mexico. Griggs quickly won an honored place in the affections of the formidable dictator, President of Mexico, Porfirio Diaz. Diaz appointed Griggs Governor of Baja California. While in this area, Griggs studied the Tarahumara Indians of Chihuahua and produced the first dictionary of their language. He also studied mining and his 1911 Mines of Chihuahua remains one of the most complex, technological histories of mining ever attempted. When the Mexican Revolution overthrew Diaz in 1910, Griggs was forced to flee the country and walked from Monterrey to Eagle Pass, Texas and then to Mesilla. After his return to Mesilla, Griggs began writing the history of the region, History of Mesilla Valley or The Gadsden Purchase . Griggs also ran the Billy the Kid Museum in Mesilla and spent his latter years engaged in scholarly study. He died in 1931.
