Rev. Raymond C. Best, of Greensboro, NC, age 77, died Sunday evening, November 25, 2007, at his home.

Rev. Best was born in Williamsport, PA on May 30, 1930. He played on one of the first teams of Little League Baseball, founded in Williamsport in 1939. After graduating from Gettysburg College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, PA, Rev. Best served as Assistant Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, Allentown, PA, 1955-1958, and as Mission Developer and first Pastor of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Dover, DE, 1958-1996. While in Dover he served terms as Dean of Lutheran congregations in Delaware and Eastern Shore Maryland, President of the Delaware State Council of Churches, and President of the Delmavra Ecumenical Agency. He was a founder and first President of Lutheran Senior Services of Dover, which has built and supervises housing facilities for seniors. After retiring to Greensboro in 1996, Rev. Best served several Lutheran congregations as Interim Pastor: Prince of Peace, Greensboro; Shiloh, Lewisville; and First, Lexington.

Rev. Best was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Nellie Paulamus Best; first wife, Tillie Eisenhart Best; and brothers, Harold and Jack Best. Surviving are his wife, Mary "Pat" Hauk Best; son, Andrew Best, Sr. and wife Jennifer of Dover, DE; daughter, Ann and husband James Kurz of Wallingford, PA; and grandchildren, Andrew Best, Jr. and wife Ashley, Michael Best and Kiera Kurz.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening, November 29, from 6-8 pm, and Friday morning, November 30, from 10-11 am, at Christ Lutheran Church. A Celebration of the resurrection will be held at 11 am, Friday, November 30, at Christ Lutheran Church with Rev. Dr. Dwight Shellaway officiating. Interment will be at 1 pm, Tuesday, December 4, at Mount Rose Cemetery in York, PA with Rev. Brenda Ritterpusch officiating.

      Mary E. Paulhamus was born on Dec 3, 1889 at Highspire, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Samuel Wesley Paulhamus and Elizabeth Ann Nenninger. Mary E. Paulhamus was baptized on Feb 25, 1896 at Saint Mark's Lutheran Church, Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Mary married Joseph Lewis Browne. Mary E. Paulhamus died on Nov 14, 1963 at Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, at age 73.
     

Mary and Joe had experienced similar events in childhood. Both lost their fathers when they were four years old. Mary's mother never remarried; Joe's mother remarried only when Joe was nearly 20. Both mother's struggled to support their families. Mary's mother survived on her husband's Civil War pension, while Joe's mother moved her family from one town to another looking for better jobs.
MET:Mary's brother, Holden, was a good friend of Joe Brown with whom he played amateur baseball, introduced May and Joe.

RESIDENCES: Joe and Mary rented 1234 Park Avenue from 1911-1920. Only four houses then stood on the north side of that block of Park Avenue. Mary's brother, Holden, lived in one. The Lehmans lived next door. There were only two houses on the south side in that block, one of which was owned by Cliff Manaval's family (Cliff and Lewis were life-long friends). Joe and Mary lived at 1636 Memorial Avenue from 1920 to their respective deaths. They purchased 1636 and 1638 and rented out 1638 until selling it to Joe's sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Issac Breining in 1926. Joe and Mary's son, Lewis and his wife, Florence, bought 1638 from Grace and Issac in 1941.

WIDOW: Like her mother and Joe's mother, Mary was a widow before she was 50 years old, and like her mother, she did not remarry.

      Joseph Lewis Browne was born in 1885. Joseph married Mary E. Paulhamus, daughter of Samuel Wesley Paulhamus and Elizabeth Ann Nenninger. Joseph Lewis Browne died in 1936.

      J. Lewis Browne was born on Oct 8, 1911 at Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Joseph Lewis Browne and Mary E. Paulhamus. J. married Florence Marie McClure, daughter of William Gordon McClure and Daisy Cecelia Liddle, on Oct 1, 1937 at Parsonage of Saint John's Lutheran Church, Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania; by Rev. L. G. Simmons. J. Lewis Browne died on Nov 22, 2004 at Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, at age 93.

      Florence Marie McClure was born on Mar 5, 1907 at Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of William Gordon McClure and Daisy Cecelia Liddle. Florence married J.
