County's Oldest Resident Dies At Age 102

Mrs. Rose Walton Van Cleave, 102, died at 9 p.m. Monday, June 28, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Jean Powers, of Lake Gage.

Mrs. Van Cleave was born in Atlanta, Indiana near Noblesville on May 28, 1863. On September 22, 1886, she was united in marriage to L. T. Van Cleave, who preceded her in death. Mr. Van Cleave was a minister of he Christian church and held pastorates in different localities and hence they lived many places before moving to South College street in Angola in 1908. Before his death, Mr. Van Cleave also served as librarian at Tri-State college.

Mrs. Van Cleave was a member of the Angola Church of Christ and the Women's Auxiliary of World War I Veterans.

Surviving are three sons, Robert Van Cleave of Gary, Walton Van Cleave of Lake Gage and Joseph Van Cleave of Santa Clara, California; two other daughters, Mrs. Helen Cottingham and Miss Mable Van Cleave, both of Gary; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A daughter, Ruth, preceded her mother in death in 1927.

Friends may call at the Weicht funeral home where a prayer service will be conducted at 8 p.m. tonight with Father George Minnix of the Holy Family Episcopal church and Reverend Kenneth Thomas, pastor of the Angola Church of Christ, officiating. On Thursday the body will be taken to Arcadia, Indiana for graveside rites at 1 p.m. with Reverend Kenneth Thomas officiating.

Mrs. Van Cleave's health in general, had been good until recent years, with the exception of failing eyesight following three cataract operations and impaired hearing. For a number of years she had enjoyed the hobby of crocheting mats and rugs and bestowing upon her visitors samples of her handiwork. One proud possessor of her handiwork is Betsy Palmer, well known panelist on "I've Got a Secret," who is also a good fiend of the family. She delighted in sending her crocheting as gifts to all parts of the United States.

Several years ago she attended a big league baseball game in Chicago and since that time had been an avid fan of the Chicago White Sox although she was unable to see or hear the
games.
